Chapter 58 - The Path-Seeking Saint

The S.H.I.E.L.D. assault team brought in by Agent Hill consisted of more than thirty people.

Now, nearly twelve of them had suddenly taken to the air—showing just how deeply Hydra had infiltrated.

A series of dull, continuous thuds rang out.

Everyone who had been lifted into the air crashed down into the center of the room and was restrained by the others.

"What's happening outside now?"

Steve asked as he strode toward the exit, glancing at Agent Hill.

"Hydra has revolted. Director Fury went missing after issuing the war announcement. The main battlefronts are currently the Headquarters, the Hub, the Academy, the Sandbox, and the carrier base under the Ocean Division. My mission is to follow you to stabilize Headquarters first, then gather trustworthy personnel to reinforce the other areas." Hill gave a quick explanation of the situation.

She should have been being held in the interrogation room under suspicion.

But in reality, Fury had only done that as a cover, hiding her from sight. He simply hadn't expected the war to break out so quickly.

Steve suddenly stopped in his tracks. "Do you smell gasoline?"

"The surface-level building disguising this underground S.H.I.E.L.D. prison is made to look like an auto repair garage," Hill replied without stopping. "There's always a gasoline smell. Mr. Rogers, we brought your uniform and shield—they're in the car outside."

The group and four S.H.I.E.L.D. soldiers entered the elevator to ascend. Saiki Kusuo's brows tightened slightly.

And at the exact instant the elevator doors slid open, a tide-like eruption of flames roared outward, igniting the air itself. A scorching shockwave surged violently in all directions!

The explosion triggered by the gasoline vapors filling the entire warehouse space was no weaker than an airburst missile.

Even if one survived the flames, the lack of oxygen would claim every life.

But an even greater force burst forth from Saiki Kusuo's outstretched hands.

For a brief moment, time seemed to halt. The raging flames twisted into a massive burning dragon, spiraling upward with a deafening howl. Cars, shattered glass, dirt, and concrete—everything was torn apart by that power. And when the destruction settled, even the air felt unbelievably clear. They could see the vast starry sky through the night.

"Hydra left three people outside. You didn't notice," Saiki said calmly, lowering his hands.

It was as if the god-like figure from a moment ago had been nothing but an illusion.

But the lingering heat in the air and the scorched, blackened ground told the truth of the miracle they had just witnessed.

"M-Mr. Rogers' shield…" Hill stared blankly at the completely destroyed surroundings.

"You mean this?"

Saiki hooked a finger lightly. A large, pitch-black pot flew over from midair, hovering in front of them.

"…Seventy years away, and I almost can't recognize it anymore," Steve murmured as he picked up his shield.

"Our car is destroyed," Hill took a deep breath, forcing the image she'd just seen out of her mind. "We can't call for backup, and we were supposed to be the reinforcements. There's nowhere nearby to get transportation. And if we can't stabilize Headquarters in time, and the carrier base at sea gets taken over…"

Hill didn't finish the sentence, but her expression alone showed how dire the situation was.

She had clearance to know about the helicarriers—S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ultimate weapons. Not only did they carry advanced aircraft; their firepower alone could easily level a small nation.

"I'll take Steve over there first," said Saiki's voice inside their minds as his body slowly rose into the air. "We'll fly."

"…Thank God you're on our side." Steve gripped the blackened shield firmly and looked back at Hill. "As long as we get to the battlefield, all we have to do is defeat the enemy, right?"

"That's right." Hill nodded and handed him an electronic map. "In Director Fury's final announcement, he authorized all S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel to follow your command during wartime. As long as you appear on the battlefield, you can rally the troops. But be careful—Hydra operatives may be disguised as our own."

"In that case, Saiki will toss them into the sky." Steve said no more, walking forward to show he was ready.

Saiki wrapped him in telekinesis and flew toward the distant night horizon.

The electronic map marked numerous classified S.H.I.E.L.D. sites. Their destination was the S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters building in Washington, D.C.

At the same time, Shen He contacted Saiki through the pre-prepared communicator.

"Saiki is in position as well." Shen He glanced downward; the armor's auto-tracking system had locked onto Lelouch's vehicle. "Lelouch, I'm twelve hundred meters directly above you. Did you get anything out of them?"

"No," Lelouch replied. "Not all of these people are Hydra. They don't know Garrett's plan or objective. We're heading for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s New York branch—that location has already become one of the battlefields."

"Leave the New York branch to Tony," Shen He decided immediately. "Revenge only works when aimed at the right targets. Our goal isn't the battlefield—it's the Hydra leaders. Garrett and Alexander. At the very least, those two cannot be allowed to escape."

The biggest failure of the plan was not capturing the Hydra high command, allowing them to flee.

But even if Hydra grew two heads every time he cut off one, Shen He intended to chop down all of them—one after another.

"Do you know where they might have gone?" Lelouch asked.

"I don't," Shen He answered without hesitation. "Jeanne—this part's yours."

"—Eh!?" Jeanne's eyes widened. Had she heard correctly?

"Just close your eyes and point in a direction," Shen He said softly. "I have faith in you."

According to the system, the capabilities of Servants did not change based on the world. Meaning that even without the Root existing in this world, Jeanne could still receive divine revelation.

Shen He remembered clearly: the ability known as Revelation or future sight applied to all matters related to achieving the objective—including choosing the right path.

"B-But this is completely baseless… Fine." Jeanne bit her lip, but finally agreed.

Sitting on the armor's palm, she took a deep breath, laid her flag across her lap, pressed her hands to her chest, and closed her eyes. Her golden ponytail fluttered in the wind.

May the Lord guide me to the path…

"That way!" Jeanne raised her flag and pointed.

"Jarvis," Shen He called.

"Sir, according to the map Agent Hill provided, there is a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. flight base in that direction."
