Chapter 1 - Side Effects

There was always a chill around this torn home. A home that was rotting away with a man who has the darkest eyes a human can have, his hair is always falling out. A stick grip tight by his wrinkled fingers. When the long stick smacks an unruly kid they become a sweet innocent child. Me and my friend Alice, Jane, and Billy were walking home from the school. The chill ran down my back again passing by the house with a crooked door left open. Jane has a suggestion.

"Guys, let's explore."

Jane never ceases to amaze, to be able to go on about an adventure to anywhere despite the dangers that could be faced. On the other hand Alice and Billy are quite different.

"Are you stupid? Our dad is going to yell at us if we do."

"Ye- yeah, I really don't think going to an abandoned home is quite safe." Billy stutters.

"Oh come on, Look at the house." She says excitedly.

The house did not have a welcoming atmosphere, instead it was strangely alluring. Maybe it was because I didn't want to do my math homework.

"I want to go."

"See, even Eva wants to go explore. We don't see much going out much." She wraps her arm around my shoulder.

Both Alice and Billy felt hesitant but they, just like us, despite being worried, were curious what lies inside this house.

The closer we were to the house the more I felt it. It did not have a welcoming atmosphere, but it was strangely alluring. A door barely hanging on its hinges swings with a squeak to give a slight glimpse of the inside from punctured holes. Sudden rumors that I have heard from time to time come up. So many kinds of people lived here, families, children, businessmen, and murderers were here. All the signs were there on this door. With a touch of my finger the doorknob wiggled in my grip. A twist left it completely broken but the door is now unlocked. A slight push was all that was needed. The sounds of the creaking door lingers even after being fully opened. Within this doorway the inside looked bigger than the outside.

"This was not what I expected when I saw this house."

"I told you, we'll get yelled at for coming here. A house that an old man lives in."

"I really want to leave, guys." Billy says nervously.

It was just one big room with no way up stairs nor a section that says it's another room. Jane rushes in without an ounce of fear. From what I can see standing outside this broken door a pathway of dove feathers and those of a crow leads its way to a perfectly pristine door to the backyard. Taking a step in the room itself was unordinary. All the furniture seemed like they had gravitated towards the walls: a desk, bed, lamps, a toilet, all positioned perfectly as if it's meant to be there.

"Wow! Look at these, there's a moose head up there."

It just stares at us glued to the ceiling.

"I don't think we should be here gu-guys."

Billy hasn't moved an inch from the entrance of the door shaking like a leaf at the sight in front of him. It was all too strange. The furniture, the plain look of all the walls, it was all too much. Plus, we are invading a person's home. This is wrong, why did I think that we are allowed to do this? A tingly sensation went down my spine at the thought of this. We have to get out of here.

"We have to go"

"Alice, watch this!"

Jane has found her way up to the climbing up and around the furniture stuck to the walls and ceiling. She has prepared herself to jump onto one of the moose horns.

"Jane, don't do this. That's too dangerous." Alice says worryingly.

I have to stop her from what she's doing now and get out of this house.

"Wait, Stop!"

Before I could even reason with her she jumped. From what I saw in that split second just an inch away from grabbing it the moose head had moved away from her. She falls just close enough to where I was to be able to catch her.

"Omg, that was way to Jane."

"Hahaha. That was surprising. Hahah!" Jane laughs hysterically.

"Are you ok?"

She won't laugh and pushes herself out of my arm. I hear one sentence from Billy.

"Guys, we're going to be la-"

The door closes behind us. At the other side of the room the backyard door opens instantly. A bright light covers a silhouette momentarily. It was the old man, with the smacking stick. He takes one step in and suddenly he was in front of me, in front of all us, there was more than one. It all went dark as I felt a stinging pain on my face.

The sounds of a siren are all heard and then a fading vision of the inside of an ambulance. I felt hungry but at the same time not. Opening my eyes I was in a hospital and in the midst of this, I woke up to a doctor and my parents mid-conversation.

"It seems like she ended up catching a whiff of some drugs with a strong sweet smell. That house is a den for dealers. Luckily a kid was able to call someone to help the children. The old men called 911 and helped with first aid before the ambulance came. You both are lucky that they have not consumed more of these into their body."

"I see…so that's what happened"
