The word echoed in my mind like a persistent drumbeat. Knotting. What did that even mean in this context? My knowledge of biology told me that only certain animals experienced that phenomenon during mating, primarily canines. Dogs, wolves, coyotes. But humans? Never.
So why had David mentioned it? Was he so lost in pleasure that meaningless words spilled from his lips? The burning curiosity gnawed at me, made worse by his earlier warning about losing control. What kind of control? What could possibly happen during sex that would require my intervention?
My analytical mind was finally catching up, asking the questions I should have posed from the beginning. But David had been suffering, his body wracked with fever and tremors. My instinct to help first and question later had overridden everything else. Now doubt crept in like poison.
