Chapter 61 - Saying Goodbye To The Past

The door was unlocked, so I stepped inside Amon's father's office.

I didn't know what I was expecting.

Maybe some kind of holy grail, or the secrets of some kind of energy manipulation method.

But there wasn't anything of the sort.

There was a desk, a few couches, and two paintings.

One painting was of Amon's father.

He looked like a noble man.

From what I remembered of Amon's past, he was a good father too.

A loving father, a caring father...

I glanced at the second painting.

It was a family painting.

Amon and his family.

They looked happy together.

I felt sympathetic.

He could've had such a happy life if that incident had never happened.

But this was reality.

The incident happened, and there was no turning back time.

I slowly walked around the office.

With my finger, I brushed off the dust, and eventually, I found myself sitting behind the desk.

As fancy and noble of a man as Amon's father was, it seemed like he liked sitting on rocks.

The chair was not comfortable at all.

Letting out a chuckle, I tried my best to get comfortable, and then inspected some of the books on the table.

War tactics, noble etiquette, and even children's drawing books.

I was interested in the children's drawing books in particular, since I knew that Amon was an only child.

As expected, the moment I opened them, I saw a bunch of incoherent doodles.

"Haha..."

Amon sucked at drawing.

I flipped page after page.

For some reason, Amon liked to mark the date of when he drew.

Sadly though... he didn't draw that often.

Only once every couple of months.

But within just two years, his drawings became actually decent.

Definitely much better than what I could draw.

But as I flipped the page to look for more, I realized there weren't any more drawings.

As I looked down at the date, I let out a deep sigh.

This date was one day away from the incident.

What terrible timing.

I finally closed the kid's drawing book, and after sitting by for a few more minutes, I stood up.

There really wasn't anything else inside the office.

It was just a memento of the past.

Despite that...

I couldn't help but feel sad.

So as I walked to the servant's quarters and picked up my cleaning gear, I decided to at the very least make the office look brand new before I left.

I wasn't sure how long I had spent cleaning the place, but the sun had started coming up already.

I could even see the snow beginning to fall even more fiercely too.

It's going to be a cold winter.

Even so, I dipped the quill in ink and finished the last of my scribbles.

As stupid as it was, I drew a cute cat inside the kid's drawing book.

And of course, I also dated it.

January 12th, 1853.

But then I turned toward another piece I had been working on for the last five hours.

A journal.

It was a journal that detailed the next six major events that happen within a year, including the descent of demons.

But obviously, I wasn't an idiot.

I didn't just write it out.

Instead, I made a very simple cipher, using today's date.

You start reading the journal from the 12th line.

But you only read the 1st, the 8th, the 5th, and 3rd letters of every word.

Then, after you repeat that process two more times, totaling 12 words, you move down 12 lines, and you repeat the process again.

It was the simplest cipher I could think of.

More importantly, to an outsider who just picked this journal up and read through it all, they would just be reading a simple steamy romance novel.

The only issue was the 8-letter long words... but I just stuffed in moans and other types of sounds to reduce suspicion.

Anyways...

This sure took a while.

Though I had my Telekinesis and fast hands to thank for writing so damn fast.

But now that I was done, it was time I moved onto the second phase of my plan.

And that was to tell the main character and the female leads about this information while also helping out Evelyn.

And what better way to do that than to get the two sides acquainted.

Smiling to myself, I quickly undid a little something.

Using my Telekinesis, I ripped out the dimensional ring that had been in my throat.

Then, I tossed the journal inside, and after cleaning the blood off the floor, I finally left Amon's home.

After I locked the door, I also tossed the key inside the dimensional ring.

This will be the last time I'm in this house, at least for a very long time.

So with that, I admired the house as well as the flowers I grew before finally moving on.

I flew through the city, and I realized that the bell tower I had destroyed last week had been reconstructed.

Though, the dried blood on the ground was still there.

If people hadn't thought I was a demon before, after this event, they were 100% sure I was.

Though I didn't dwell on that for too long as I eventually made it to the casino.

It was surprisingly empty.

Still, I got to the top floor, and after knocking a few times, I entered Evelyn's office.

"Hmm...?"

Evelyn turned toward me while still sipping some coffee.

"Don't you think it's a little too early for a visit?"

"My bad. Sorry for not visiting that much either."

Putting the coffee down, she adjusted her clothes and crossed her legs.

"That sounds like something you'd say right before not visiting me again. So? What's up, Amon?"

With how relaxed she was, I relaxed as well.

Her opinion of me remained the same.

I'm glad.

I took the journal out of my dimensional ring and tossed it over to her.

She caught it and immediately gave it a skim.

Raising her brow, she said, "Is this some new way of confessing to someone? Look, I'm flattered, but..."

So she finally realized it.

"It's a cipher, huh. I haven't seen many old school ciphers being used nowadays. Anyhow, will you give me a hint?"

I rolled my eyes.

"Today's beautiful."

She nodded at me.

"Hum~ Okay. That's a simple one then."

That solved one issue.

"Make sure you decipher everything to the end, and also... I want you to share this information with a few people..."

I began listing out a few names, which of course included Kevin, Isabelle, Melina, and a few other female leads.

When I was done, I stared intently at Evelyn.

"Make sure every single one of them knows about the information that's inside that journal. I want you to promise me, Evelyn."

Seeing how serious I was being, Evelyn smiled, and after standing up, she extended her hand.

I accepted it, and we shook on it.

"Not sure what's in here, but I got it. I'll let them all know. Mind if I flash your name in case they don't believe me?"

Not really.

I don't exactly care.

It's just...

"I'll be disappearing for a while."

She raised a brow again.

"Disappearing, as in...?"

I stared straight into her eyes for a moment and frowned slightly.

"So Amon Everness is disappearing. You're a piece of work, you know that? I really hope whatever you put into this journal is worth the trouble you're putting me through."

"Don't worry, you can use that information too. Prepare everything you need before every one of those events, and I promise you'll thank me later," I replied.

I was being as honest as I could with her.

And I also didn't want to beat around the bush either.

So thankfully, she accepted everything I said with trust and a slightly open mind.

In the end, I said everything I needed to.

Rather... there was one more thing.

"One of the names... the girl I mentioned, Charlotte. She's opening an alchemy shop in a few weeks. I want you to put 100 platinum bars as an investment."

She straightened her back.

"How much are we splitting?"

I rolled my eyes.

"Invest your own 100 platinum bars. Just make sure you also invest 100 from me."

"If you're that confident, sure. I'll bite."

At least she gave in at the end.

Though... should I just leave like this?

She was being very helpful, and aside from cryptic information, I didn't give her many power-ups.

But I guess I could help, at least indirectly.

"You don't use your Gift, Card Dealing, very often, do you?"

She flinched.

"Well, why do you think I don't use it? It's a useless Gift. What's the point in dealing cards slightly faster?"

And that's the problem.

Just seeing her Gift at a glance, anyone would say the same thing.

However, she's missing something really crucial.

"Have you ever tried dealing any other card other than the playing cards?"

Before she could reply with her snarky comment, I decided to add:

"There is more than one type of card. There are also divination, occult, and esoteric cards. Trading cards, and obviously, storytelling cards too."

The only problem was that she didn't know what her Gift was really capable of.

"You can deal any type of card and also get the most out of that card's effect. That means you can precisely use divination. Then there's also a storytelling card... let's say a dragon."

"If you have enough mastery over your Gift, and you also have enough energy, you can literally summon a whole dragon to fight for you."

With those words, I approached the door, and as I was about to leave, I turned toward her with a smile.

She looked like she had been enlightened but also conflicted that I knew so much.

Regardless of that though...

"I'll see you later, Evelyn. Take care and be safe."

I finally left.

For once, I felt like I had said all I had to say, and I also told her just enough to ensure she survived.

But now, it's time I focused on myself.

I wanted to disappear, and I wanted the world to think that Amon Everness was dead.

At first, I thought of asking Johan Ranvier and his assassin's guild for help... but I decided against it.

I wanted to keep that guild at arm's length, because after Amon Everness disappeared, I wanted to get closer to the assassin's guild.

Maybe... just maybe, I wanted to join it alongside Clementine.

So because of that, I decided to turn toward another person who could ensure my disappearance seemed as legit as possible.

The headmaster.
