Chapter 148 - Chapter 148 : The Truth Behind the Symbol

William did not move.

The symbol remained on the table.

The faint line that had appeared upon it was gone, but the image remained in his mind.

It had pointed toward one of the seven connections.

That alone was enough to make him suspicious.

If the people behind the symbol wanted him to follow it, then following it immediately would be exactly what they expected.

So he didn't.

He left the room.

The symbol remained untouched.

The next morning, William acted as though nothing had happened.

He trained for several hours.

He spoke with Mira.

He met Adrian and the others.

He even left the valley briefly before returning later that day.

Nothing about his behavior suggested that he had discovered anything.

But William was waiting.

He wanted to see whether the people observing him would react.

They did.

Not immediately.

Not dramatically.

A single message arrived.

It came from the same organization that had previously given him information about the symbol.

William opened it.

There were only a few lines.

The western observation point has become active again.

William stared at the message.

Mira looked at him.

"They know."

"Maybe."

"They're responding to the symbol."

"Maybe."

She frowned.

"You really don't want to assume anything."

"Because that's what they want."

William folded the message.

"They've been giving us pieces of information."

"And now?"

"Now they're giving us a choice."

William didn't go to the western observation point.

Instead, he went in the opposite direction.

He traveled toward a completely unrelated region.

Mira accompanied him.

Adrian stayed behind with Leon and Elias.

William wanted to limit the number of people involved.

After two days of travel, he stopped.

Mira looked around.

"This isn't the western boundary."

"No."

"Then why are we here?"

William looked at the ground.

"Because I want to test something."

He sat down.

Mira waited.

William closed his eyes.

He didn't search for the symbol.

He didn't search for the network.

He searched for the connections around him.

Slowly, they became visible to his perception.

People.

Places.

Movements.

Information.

Nothing unusual.

Then—

one connection appeared.

It was extremely weak.

William followed it.

It led toward the west.

Exactly where he expected.

He opened his eyes.

"They're watching."

Mira frowned.

"From here?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't they react when we came here?"

"Because they were waiting."

"For what?"

"For me to investigate the western point."

Mira understood.

"They expected you to go there."

William nodded.

"So you came here instead."

"Yes."

"To prove that?"

"Not yet."

William stood.

He changed direction again.

This time, he went north.

The connection followed.

He stopped.

It followed.

He changed direction again.

It followed.

Mira eventually smiled.

"So they aren't following your location."

"No."

"They're following your connections."

"Exactly."

William continued walking.

Then suddenly—

the connection disappeared.

Mira looked at him.

"They noticed."

"Yes."

"How?"

"They realized I was testing them."

William smiled faintly.

"Good."

"Good?"

"Now we know they're capable of recognizing the test."

They returned to the valley.

William immediately gathered everyone.

He explained what had happened.

Adrian listened carefully.

"So the observer isn't simply following you."

"No."

"It's monitoring your connections."

"Yes."

Leon frowned.

"Then why?"

William looked at the symbol.

"Because my connections reveal more than my movements."

Elias asked:

"Such as?"

"Who I trust."

"Where I train."

"What I investigate."

"And sometimes..."

William paused.

"...what I'm planning."

Mira looked at him.

"So they don't need to read your mind."

"No."

"They only need to watch what you connect to."

"Exactly."

William placed the symbol on the table.

This time, he didn't touch it.

"There's another problem."

Adrian looked at him.

"The symbol?"

"Yes."

"What about it?"

"It reacted without me."

Silence.

Leon frowned.

"You're sure?"

"Yes."

"Could it have been activated by someone else?"

"That's what I want to know."

William stared at the symbol.

"If someone can activate it remotely..."

Mira finished his thought.

"...then they can know when it's being examined."

William nodded.

"Which means every time we interact with it, we might be telling them something."

Adrian sighed.

"So even the evidence is watching us."

William smiled.

"Exactly."

They decided not to touch the symbol.

Instead, William placed it inside a sealed chamber.

No one entered.

No one examined it.

They simply waited.

One day passed.

Then two.

Then three.

Nothing happened.

On the fourth day, the symbol changed.

The mark appeared again.

A thin line formed across its surface.

This time, however, it did not point toward the seven.

It pointed toward the valley.

William immediately sensed it.

He entered the chamber alone.

Mira remained outside.

William stood before the symbol.

"You're trying to tell me something."

The symbol remained still.

He didn't touch it.

The line continued glowing.

Then another line appeared.

Then another.

A pattern began forming.

William watched.

The lines connected.

A map appeared.

Not a map of the world.

A map of connections.

William's eyes narrowed.

He recognized several.

The organization he had visited.

The woman who called herself Elena.

The masked observer.

The hidden observation point.

And—

his own connection.

William stared.

There was something strange about it.

The lines didn't converge on him.

They converged on a point behind him.

William turned.

Nothing.

He looked back.

The map remained.

The central point was still there.

But now it was moving.

Slowly.

Toward the valley.

William's expression hardened.

Someone was approaching.

He immediately left the chamber.

Mira saw his expression.

"What happened?"

"Someone is coming."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Adrian arrived moments later.

"An enemy?"

William shook his head.

"Not necessarily."

The others gathered.

William looked toward the horizon.

"We wait."

Mira frowned.

"You know they're coming."

"Yes."

"Then shouldn't we prepare?"

"We are."

"For a fight?"

"If necessary."

Several hours passed.

The sun disappeared.

The valley became quiet.

Then a figure appeared at the edge of their territory.

A woman.

She walked alone.

No guards.

No army.

No visible weapon.

William recognized her immediately.

Elena.

Mira looked at William.

"You know her."

"Yes."

Elena stopped several meters away.

She looked toward the valley.

Then at William.

"You didn't follow the western point."

"No."

She smiled.

"I expected that."

William remained still.

"You sent the message."

"No."

"You knew about it."

"Yes."

"How?"

"I was watching the same information."

William narrowed his eyes.

"So you aren't the one controlling the symbol."

"No."

"Then why did it react?"

Elena's expression became serious.

"I don't know."

William studied her.

"You knew I'd come here."

"I suspected."

"You knew someone would approach."

"I suspected."

"Everyone seems to suspect a lot."

Elena smiled.

"That's because nobody knows the entire truth."

William looked at her.

"Then perhaps you should start."

Elena took a step forward.

"I've been trying to."

"Not very successfully."

"I couldn't tell you everything."

"Because?"

"Because I didn't know who was listening."

William's expression changed slightly.

"Even here?"

"Especially here."

She looked around.

"The network isn't the only thing being monitored."

Mira stepped forward.

"What else?"

Elena looked at her.

"People."

"By whom?"

"I don't know."

William interrupted.

"Then tell me what you do know."

Elena took a breath.

"The symbol isn't a communication network."

William frowned.

"We already know it connects people."

"That's not what I mean."

She looked directly at William.

"The symbol is a filter."

William remained silent.

"What does it filter?"

"Information."

William's eyes narrowed.

Elena continued:

"Every message sent through it is altered."

"Altered how?"

"It removes certain information."

"Which information?"

"Anything that could reveal the central source."

William understood.

"So the people using the symbol don't even know who they're working for."

"Exactly."

"Then the intermediaries aren't merely hiding the source."

"They can't see it."

William thought about the organization.

The messenger.

The dead intermediary.

The people receiving instructions.

All of them had been unable to identify the source.

Not because they were incompetent.

Because the system was designed that way.

Elena continued.

"That's why you couldn't trace the connection."

William looked at her.

"You knew I tried."

"Yes."

"How?"

"I was watching."

William sighed.

"Of course."

Elena looked toward the mountains.

"There is another problem."

"What?"

"The symbol didn't point toward the seven because someone wanted you to go there."

William's eyes narrowed.

"Then why?"

"Because something at one of the seven noticed you."

Silence.

Mira looked at William.

"What does that mean?"

Elena shook her head.

"I don't know."

William stared at her.

"You're sure?"

"No."

He smiled faintly.

"At least you're honest."

Elena smiled back.

"Sometimes."

William looked toward the chamber where the symbol remained.

"Can you tell me which of the seven?"

Elena shook her head.

"No."

"Can you tell me what noticed me?"

"No."

"Then what can you tell me?"

Elena remained silent for a long time.

Finally:

"The seven aren't passive."

William's expression changed.

"What do you mean?"

"They respond."

"To what?"

"Connections."

William's eyes narrowed.

"Mine?"

"Apparently."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

William looked toward the stars.

The same seven structures he had seen before.

For the first time, he wondered whether he had misunderstood what he was looking at.

Perhaps the seven weren't simply ancient structures.

Perhaps they were something capable of responding.

But he refused to make that conclusion without evidence.

Elena turned to leave.

William stopped her.

"Wait."

She looked back.

"Why are you helping me?"

She smiled faintly.

"Because I want the truth too."

"That's not enough."

"It's all I have."

William studied her.

Then he nodded.

"Fair."

Elena began walking away.

After several steps, she stopped.

"There is one more thing."

William waited.

"Someone is going to attack you soon."

The atmosphere changed immediately.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"When?"

"Soon."

"How soon?"

She looked back.

"Before you understand the seven."

Then she left.

William remained silent.

Adrian looked at him.

"Do you believe her?"

William thought for a moment.

"I don't know."

Mira sighed.

"Again."

William smiled faintly.

"But this time, I think she's telling the truth."

"Why?"

"Because she didn't give me enough information to make the warning useful."

Adrian frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"If she wanted to manipulate me, she'd tell me exactly who would attack, where, and when."

William looked toward the darkness.

"Instead, she gave me uncertainty."

Mira nodded slowly.

"Which means she may genuinely not know."

"Yes."

That night, William remained awake.

He didn't train.

He didn't investigate the symbol.

He simply waited.

Hours passed.

Nothing happened.

Then, just before dawn—

the network moved.

William immediately opened his eyes.

A connection had appeared.

Not from the seven.

Not from the symbol.

From somewhere much closer.

He stood.

The connection stretched toward the valley.

Then another appeared.

And another.

William's expression changed.

This wasn't one observer.

Several people were approaching.

He walked outside.

Mira was already there.

"You felt it."

"Yes."

"How many?"

William closed his eyes.

He counted the connections.

"Six."

Adrian arrived.

"Six enemies?"

William shook his head.

"I don't know."

The six connections stopped at the edge of the valley.

No one entered.

No attack came.

Instead, a voice echoed through the darkness.

"William."

He looked toward the source.

"We don't want to fight."

William remained silent.

The voice continued.

"We came to offer you something."

"What?"

A pause.

"The truth."

William's eyes narrowed.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then William smiled.

"Interesting."

Mira looked at him.

"What?"

William's eyes remained fixed on the darkness.

"They finally decided to give me something real."

He took one step forward.

"But I doubt it's the truth they promised."

The darkness remained silent.

Then the voice answered:

"Perhaps not."

And the six figures stepped into the light.
