Chapter 26 - 26. Shadows of the Past

The morning air in Kamisk was crisp, carrying the scent of damp earth and blooming wildflowers as Gideon made his way toward the black stone edifice of the Adventures Association. For the first time in weeks, his step felt light. The weight of his mother's worry hadn't vanished, but it had shifted from a suffocating shroud to a supportive mantle.

He adjusted the straps of his backpack, feeling the slight heft of the iron-reinforced armor beneath his casual tunic. Without Jaice on his shoulder, his left side felt strangely cold, but he knew she was enjoying herself, terrorizing the steel claw hens at the farm under his parents' watchful eyes.

Upon entering the Association, the familiar hum of activity greeted him. It was mid-morning, and the ground floor was a sea of leather, steel, and the low growls of monster partners. Gideon bypassed the digital task boards and headed straight for the "Task Management" desk.

To his delight, Nila was there. When she saw him approaching, her professional mask wavered, replaced by a genuine spark of relief.

"Gideon! You're back in one piece." She said, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Raam sent me a message last night. He said you handled yourself... impressively."

Gideon felt a flush of heat creep up his neck. "I mostly just stood there while the guards did the heavy lifting, Nila. But I have this." He slid the commendation letter from Captain Jaanav across the polished white counter.

Nila's eyes widened as she scanned the document. "A direct commendation from the Hanjaan Security Force? Gideon, this is more than just a task completion. This is a merit boost." She began typing rapidly on her terminal. "Between the 500 dallans from the market and the Association's bonus for 'Exceptional Service in Crisis,' your account is looking very healthy for a level-1."

"I'm just glad to be back." Gideon replied. "Are there any..."

His words were cut short by a sharp, mocking laugh that echoed from the nearby lounge area. It was a sound he hadn't heard in months, but it was etched into his memory like a scar. He turned slowly, his pulse quickening.

Seated at a circular table near the 'Tier-1' task board were four teenagers. They were dressed in expensive-looking leather gear, their weapons polished to a mirror sheen. At the center of the group sat a boy with pale skin and a sneering lip. It was Kaelen, the son of the village's wealthiest merchant and Gideon's primary tormentor throughout their school years.

Beside him were Barrett and Jax, two hulking boys who had once made a sport of "tripping" Gideon in the hallways, and Elara, a girl who had always watched their bullying with a cold, silent indifference.

"Look at that." Kaelen drawled, leaning back in his chair. "If it isn't the 'orphan-farmer' playing dress-up. Tell me, Gideon, did they give you that badge for cleaning the stables, or did you finally find a monster pathetic enough to let you lead it?"

Barrett and Jax sniggered, their eyes roaming over Gideon's lean frame. They hadn't noticed the subtle changes, the way his shoulders sat broader, or the quiet intensity in his brown eyes.

Gideon felt the old familiar sting of humiliation, but it was quickly overridden by a cold, calm clarity. 'I've faced a troop of five hundred monkeys and a pack of Ironfang wolves.' He thought. 'These are just boys.'

"I'm just here to work, Kaelen." Gideon said, his voice remarkably steady. "Something you wouldn't know much about."

Kaelen's face darkened, his hand twitching toward the hilt of the rapier at his hip. "Careful, trash. Just because you integrated with a common animal doesn't mean you're a real adventurer. We're heading out to the Whispering Woods for a level-2 hunt. Maybe if you're lucky, we'll leave some scraps for you to scavenge."

Gideon didn't take the bait. He turned back to Nila, who was glaring at the group with undisguised distaste.

"Don't mind them, Gideon." She whispered. "They've spent more dallans on their gear than they've earned in actual hunts. They're level-3, but they've been 'buying' their way through tasks by hiring older mercenaries to shadow them."

Gideon nodded, but his eyes drifted back to the group as they stood to leave. They looked confident, even arrogant, but he noticed something they didn't. Elara was pale, her hand trembling slightly as she adjusted her quiver. They were heading into the Whispering Woods, a place known for its shifting mists and ambush predators.

Two hours later, Gideon was still at the Association, browsing the library on the second floor for more information on the Constitution Enhancement Exercise. He was deeply engrossed in a book about Spirit Energy flow when the emergency sirens began to wail.

It wasn't the deep, booming siren of a monster invasion, but the sharp, rhythmic pulse of an Adventurer in Distress signal.

Gideon rushed to the balcony overlooking the main hall. The atmosphere had shifted from chaotic to frantic. At the center of the hall, a holographic map of the village surroundings was projected. A red dot was blinking rapidly near the edge of the Whispering Woods.

"We have a Tier-1 distress signal!" An official shouted. "Group 4-Beta. They've been cornered by a Shadow-Stalker Cougar."

Gideon's heart plummeted. Group 4-Beta. That was Kaelen's group.

He didn't think, he didn't hesitate. He bolted down the stairs, his boots thudding against the white stone. He reached the Task Management desk just as a group of veteran Tier-2 guards were mobilizing.

"I know that area!" Gideon shouted, catching Nila's eye. "I spent my childhood foraging for wood at the edge of those woods. The Shadow-Stalker uses the hollowed-out oak groves to trap prey. If the guards take the main road, they'll be too late!"

A senior guard looked at him, skeptical. "He's just a level-1 kid."

"He's a level-1 with a Hanjaan commendation." Nila snapped, surprising even herself. "And he's right. The main road is a bottleneck."

"He is a newbie." The guard argued. "We can't send him alone."

"I'm not going alone." Gideon said, his voice ringing with a new authority. He tapped his smartphone, sending a high-frequency whistle through an app.

A few moments later, a black blur streaked through the open skylight of the Association. Jaice landed on his shoulder, her feathers ruffled and her eyes sharp with battle-intent. She had felt his urgency through the bond and had flown straight from the farm.

"I'll scout." Gideon said. "I can get there in twenty minutes through the farmer's paths. Just follow my signal."

The senior guard sighed, looking at the blinking red dot. "Go. But if you die, it's on your head, kid."

Gideon sprinted out of the Association, Jaice a comforting weight on his shoulder. He didn't head for the main gates; instead, he banked left, vaulting over the low stone walls of the village outskirts and into the dense thickets he knew by heart.

As he ran, he began the Constitution Enhancement Exercise.

Step 1... Step 5... Step 12... The familiar needles of pain pierced his muscles, but the adrenaline rush was instantaneous. His vision sharpened, and his legs felt like coiled springs. By the time he reached Step 17, he was a blur moving through the undergrowth.

Caw! Jaice took flight, rising above the canopy.

'The grove. Three hundred meters east.' She signaled through their bond. 'I smell blood and fear.'

Gideon pushed his spirit energy into his legs, his breath coming in sharp, controlled bursts. He reached the edge of the grove and skidded to a halt.

The scene was grimmer than he had imagined.

The merchant-born "adventurers" were huddled against a massive, hollowed oak. Barrett was on the ground, his leg mangled and bleeding heavily. Jax was swinging a mace wildly at nothing, his eyes glazed with terror. Elara stood in front of Barrett, her bow snapped in half, holding a small hunting knife with a trembling hand.

And Kaelen? The "leader" was paralyzed, his expensive rapier lying in the dirt five feet away.

Circulating above them, blending perfectly with the shifting shadows of the trees, was the Shadow-Stalker Cougar. It was a Tier-2, level-3 monster, its fur a shimmering, oily black that seemed to absorb the light.

It was toying with them. It let out a low, vibrating growl that seemed to come from everywhere at once. It crouched, muscles rippling, preparing for the final pounce, aimed directly at the defenseless Elara.

"Jaice! Wind Blade, now!" Gideon roared.

From the sky, a sharp arc of compressed air streaked down, striking the ground inches in front of the cougar. The monster hissed, startled, its violet eyes locking onto the new intruder.

Gideon stepped out from the trees, unsheathing his short sword. The golden embroidery on his black armor caught the dappled sunlight, making him look far more imposing than a Tier-1 adventurer should.

"G-Gideon?" Elara gasped, her voice cracking.

Kaelen looked up, his face a mask of shame and disbelief. "What are you doing here, trash? Get out! You'll just get us all killed!"

"Shut up, Kaelen." Gideon said coldly, not taking his eyes off the cougar. "Jax, get Barrett's belt and tie a tourniquet above that wound. Elara, get behind me."

The cougar didn't wait. It lunged, a streak of violet and black.

Gideon didn't retreat. He performed the 18th step of the Constitution Enhancement Exercise.

The "steel wall" in his spirit space that had blocked him for days suddenly shattered under the weight of his resolve. A surge of power flooded his limbs. He didn't just dodge; he counter-attacked.

He spun to the left, his short sword infused with a vibrant spirit energy.

Clang!

The blade met the cougar's claws. The force sent a vibration up Gideon's arms, but he stood his ground. He used the momentum to roll, slashing upward as he moved. The blade caught the cougar's flank, drawing a spray of dark blood.

The monster shrieked, a sound of pure rage.

For the next ten minutes, Gideon danced a deadly ballet. He was vastly outmatched in raw power, but he had something the cougar didn't expect, a partner.

Jaice was a whirlwind above, dropping gusts of wind that disrupted the cougar's footing every time it prepared a major strike. Gideon stayed close to the wounded group, acting as a living shield. He was a Tier-1, level-1, holding off a Tier-2 predator.

"Use the syringes!" Gideon shouted over his shoulder. "In my backpack! Red for Barrett, Green for Jax!"

Elara scrambled to his discarded backpack, her fingers fumbling with the latches. She found the Medical and Constitution syringes Jaanav had given him. With trembling hands, she injected Barrett, whose pale face immediately regained a ghost of color.

The cougar, realizing its prey was being bolstered, grew desperate. It let out a sonic roar that sent a wave of dizziness through Gideon. He stumbled, his guard dropping for a split second.

The monster seized the opening, its jaws snapping shut inches from Gideon's shoulder. He felt the wet, metallic breath of the beast.

Suddenly, a heavy mace slammed into the cougar's ribs.

Jax, bolstered by the Green syringe and a sudden burst of shame-fueled courage, had joined the fray. "Get... away from him!" He grunted, swinging again.

The distraction was all Gideon needed. He pushed his spirit energy to its absolute limit, the storage containers in his spirit refiner draining rapidly.

"Jaice! Full Power!" He commanded.

The Breeze Crow folded her wings and dove, a literal living projectile of wind. At the same moment, Gideon lunged forward, his short sword glowing with a fierce, concentrated spirit.

He didn't aim for the head. He aimed for the throat.

SLURCH.

The blade sank deep. The cougar thrashed, its violet eyes fading, before it collapsed into the dirt, its shadow-fur dissolving into a dull, matted black.

Silence returned to the Whispering Woods, broken only by the heavy panting of the teenagers.

Gideon stood over the carcass, his chest heaving, his muscles screaming in the aftermath of the exercise. He felt a hand on his shoulder. It was Jax. The big boy didn't say anything; he just gave a firm, respectful nod.

Kaelen was the last to move. He stood up slowly, his face a complicated mess of emotions. He looked at Gideon, the boy he had pushed into the dirt, the boy he had called trash, and then he looked at the dead Tier-2 monster.

"You... you saved us." Kaelen whispered, the arrogance finally stripped away.

Gideon sheathed his sword. He didn't feel the surge of triumph he expected. He just felt tired. "The guards are five minutes behind me. Can you carry Barrett?"

"Yeah." Jax said, hoisting his friend onto his back.

As they began the slow walk back toward the forest edge, Elara walked beside Gideon. "Why did you come? After everything they did to you?"

Gideon looked up at Jaice, who was circling contentedly above. "In the wild, it doesn't matter who you were in the classroom. It only matters who stands beside you when the shadows move."

By the time they reached the main road, the Association guards had arrived. Raam was at the front, his face pale with worry, which transformed into a look of absolute, stunned pride when he saw Gideon leading the battered group out of the trees.

Gideon didn't wait for the praise. He walked straight to Raam and handed him his empty spirit energy syringes.

"I think I need a nap." Gideon said, before his knees finally gave out.
