The Iron Peaks did not earn their name from the presence of ore, but from the relentless, unforgiving nature of their geography. They were jagged, obsidian teeth jutting into the stratosphere, where the air was too thin for the weak and the wind was sharp enough to flay the spirit energy from an unrefined core. As the Inquisition's specialized high-altitude VTOL crested the final thermal ridge, the world below disappeared into a churning sea of violet clouds, the first sign of the Chimera Gate's interference.
Inside the cramped, red lit hold of the aircraft, the atmosphere was thick with the silent vibration of three distinct, high tier auras.
Gideon sat in the center, his midnight-black tactical armor absorbing the ambient light. His hood was up, the shadow of it masking his face, but the azure glow of his eyes was visible through the slits of his mask. Beside him, Jaice was a statue of translucent glass, her talons dug deep into the reinforced padding of his shoulder. Gideon was at the peak of Tier-2, Level-5, his spirit space stabilized by the binary rotation of two Shining Stars. He felt the third star, the void-point of the Third Cycle tugging at his consciousness, a cold hunger for the environmental mastery that lay just beyond his reach.
To his left sat Inquisitor Nallan. He was a man of scorched edges, his Fire-Soul affinity making the air around him shimmer with a distorted, hazy heat. His monster partner, a Magma-Scaled Salamander named Igni, lay coiled at his feet, its breath hissing like steam from a pressurized boiler. Nallan was a veteran of the Northern Purges, a man who believed that the only way to deal with the Obsidian Empire was to turn their vanguard into ash.
To his right was Inquisitor Reena. She was the antithesis of Nallan's roar, a Shadow-Weaver who seemed to bleed into the corners of the hold. Her partner, a Void-Stitcher Spider named Arachne, hung from the ceiling of the craft, its eight eyes reflecting the red tactical lights. Reena had been a pillar of the Association's administrative wing before her ascension, and her mind was a steel trap of logistics and lethal precision.
"Thirty seconds to the drop-zone." The pilot's voice crackled over the comms. "The Imperial vanguard has established a perimeter around Relay Tower One. The spatial distortion is at 40%. If we don't hit them now, the rift will be large enough for their heavy cruisers."
Gideon stood up, his black armor clicking as the joints pressurized. "Nallan, you take the southern slope. Flush them out of the trenches. Reena, you provide the shroud. I'm going straight for the tower's core."
Nallan grinned, a flash of white teeth in the red light. "I'll give them a sunrise they weren't expecting."
Reena didn't speak; she simply adjusted her dark veil, and Arachne dropped onto her shoulder, weaving a thin, near-invisible thread of shadow-silk between her fingers.
The cargo doors hissed open, and the freezing, oxygen-starved air of the Iron Peaks rushed in.
"For the Republic." Nallan growled.
"For the cradle." Gideon whispered, thinking of a toddler clutching a violet stone.
Then, they leaped.
They didn't fall like men; they descended like gods of war.
Gideon initiated the [Sovereign Dome] mid-air, but he didn't project it as a wide shield. He collapsed the wind around the three of them, creating a streamlined vacuum-tunnel that accelerated their descent to terminal velocity. They tore through the violet clouds, emerging over a jagged plateau where a massive, crystalline relay tower hummed with the necrotic energy of the Obsidian Empire.
Below them, the Imperial vanguard, the Obsidian Wraiths were already in position. These were Tier-2 and Tier-3 elites, clad in heavy, jagged plate armor that seemed to drink the light. Their monster partners, Terror-Winged Bats and Grave-Hounds, let out a collective shriek as the Inquisition's strike team breached their airspace.
"IGNITION!" Nallan roared.
He hit the ground like a meteor. As his boots touched the obsidian rock, he released a [Solar Flare Nova]. A wave of white-hot spirit fire erupted in a three-hundred-degree arc, incinerating the front line of Grave-Hounds and turning the Imperial trenches into rivers of molten glass. Igni expanded in size, the Magma-Scaled Salamander becoming a twenty-foot engine of destruction that breathed liquid fire.
Reena was a ghost in the inferno. She didn't land; she simply vanished into the shadows cast by Nallan's flames. Arachne spun a web of [Void-Silk] across the battlefield, a lethal, invisible lattice that sliced through Imperial armor as the Wraiths tried to reposition. Reena moved through the chaos, her daggers finding the gaps in the Empire's jagged plate, her movements silent and devoid of hesitation.
Gideon, however, was the eye of the storm.
He landed at the base of the Relay Tower, his two Shining Stars spinning at their absolute limit. The Imperial Commander, a Tier-3 veteran with a Shadow-Drake partner, lunged at him with a serrated obsidian polearm.
"Republic filth!" The Commander hissed, the Shadow-Drake unleashing a breath of necrotic ice. "The Empire's vengeance cannot be stopped by a boy!"
Gideon didn't draw his grey short sword yet. He raised his left hand, and the air around the Commander suddenly turned into a solid wall.
[Skill: Sovereign Depressurization].
Gideon didn't push; he erased. He created a vacuum-pocket around the Shadow-Drake's head. The creature's breath weapon imploded within its own throat, the necrotic energy backfiring and shattering its jaw.
The Commander roared in fury, swinging the polearm in a wide arc imbued with [Abyssal Cleave]. The blade cut through the air, leaving a trail of violet darkness.
Gideon stepped inside the strike. He performed a micro-circulation of the 1st step of the Third Cycle, his spirit energy turning into a cold, absolute void. He caught the obsidian polearm with his bare, armored hand. The spirit-absorbent polymers of his Tier-3 armor groaned, but they held.
"You talk about vengeance." Gideon said, his voice a low, terrifying gale. "I talk about my sister's sleep."
He twisted the polearm, the Tier-2 grey short sword finally leaving its sheath in a blur of motion. He didn't use a flashy skill. He used the [Vacuum Edge], backed by the density of his Level-5 refiner.
SHIII-WHIP.
The obsidian polearm was severed. The Imperial Commander stood frozen as a thin, azure line appeared across his throat. The Wind-affinity didn't just cut; it cauterized the spirit-veins, preventing the Tier-3's self-healing from even initiating.
The Commander fell, and Gideon didn't spare him a second glance. He turned toward the tower's base, where the spatial anchor was vibrating with a frequency that made his teeth ache.
"Thorne! The perimeter is breaking!" Nallan's voice crackled over the comms, punctuated by the sound of roaring flames. "They're sending in the Iron-Omen Sentinels! We can't hold the plateau for long!"
Gideon looked up. From the higher ridges, six massive, mechanical-organic hybrids, The Sentinels fueled by the Empire's dark-matter tech were descending. They were the size of houses, their multi-jointed legs crushing the rock.
"Reena, cover the core!" Gideon said.
A shroud of absolute darkness fell over the base of the tower. Reena and Arachne wove a cocoon of shadow-silk around Gideon, masking his spirit signature from the Sentinels' scanners.
Gideon placed his palms against the relay tower's primary crystal. He felt the cold, devouring intent of the Obsidian Empire within the stone. They wanted to tear the sky. They wanted to turn Kamisk into a tomb.
He didn't use an explosive. He used the Double Star resonance. He began to vibrate his spirit energy at a frequency that directly opposed the tower's spatial anchor. It was the [Inverse Resonance], a technique Samsung had taught him for breaking down 'unbreakable' alloys.
The tower began to shriek. The violet light flickered, turning a jagged, sickly green.
"Gideon, now!" Reena's voice was sharp. "The Sentinels are firing!"
A beam of dark-matter energy slammed into the shadow-shroud. Reena was thrown back, her spirit-shield flickering.
Gideon didn't flinch. He pushed his refiner to the absolute limit. He felt the Third Cycle beckon, the void-point in his soul expanding to swallow the necrotic energy of the tower.
CRACK.
The primary crystal shattered. The violet beam shooting into the sky collapsed, the spatial rift closing with a thunderous whoomph that knocked everyone on the plateau to their knees.
The Chimera Gate was dead.
"Mission accomplished! Move to the extraction point!" Nallan shouted, his Salamander Igni creating a wall of magma-fire to shield their retreat.
The three Inquisitors didn't stay to savor the victory. They were in the heart of enemy territory, and the Empire's reinforcements would be swarm-level within minutes. Gideon grabbed Reena, who was clutching her side, and Nallan led the way, his fire-path clearing the swarming bats from the air.
They leaped from the edge of the plateau, Gideon deploying a [Gliding Gale] that carried them miles away from the tower, deep into the labyrinthine canyons of the Iron Peaks.
They traveled for two hours in total silence, the only sound the rhythmic breathing of their monster partners. They moved through the 'dead zones' where the spirit-scanners of the Empire were blocked by the natural obsidian interference of the mountains.
Finally, they reached their objective: Outpost Shadow-Fall.
It wasn't a military base. It was a hidden bunker carved into the roots of a mountain, its entrance hidden by a waterfall of freezing glacial melt. It was an Inquisition 'Safe Box', one of the few places in the North where they could disappear.
Inside the bunker, the air was cold and smelled of stone and old spirit-rations. Nallan slumped against a wall, his Magma-Scaled Salamander shrinking back to its original size, while Reena sat on a crate, Arachne tending to the spirit-burn on her arm with healing silk.
Gideon stood by the stone table, his hood finally pulled back. His face was pale, the azure light in his eyes dimming as he allowed his refiner to cool. He looked at the data-slate, which was already updating with new Imperial movements.
"They lost Tower One." Gideon said, his voice raspy. "But they have two more anchors. And according to the resonance we captured, Project Black-Pulse is being accelerated in the valley below."
"We hit them hard today." Nallan said, taking a swig of water. "But the Empire... They don't care about casualties. They'll have a new Commander in that sector by dawn."
"Then we don't hit the Commanders." Reena said, her eyes sharp in the dim light. "We hit the supply lines. If we can intercept the Dark-Matter shipments from the Empire's border, the towers become useless piles of glass."
Gideon looked at his two companions. They were different from the cadets at the Academy. They didn't care about medals or prestige. They fought with a ferocity that came from the same place as his own, a need to protect the things that made life worth living.
"Nallan, you were right about the fire." Gideon said. "It kept them at bay. Reena, your silk saved my life at the core."
Nallan laughed, a short, tired sound. "Don't get sentimental, Thorne. We're Inquisitors. We're the monsters that keep the other monsters awake at night."
Gideon walked to the corner of the bunker, looking at his smartphone. There was no signal here, but he looked at the image of Fareen. He felt the two Shining Stars in his soul settle into a low, protective hum.
He thought about the Third Cycle. He knew that to stop the next two towers, he would have to cross the threshold. He would have to become the Wind of the Void.
"Get some sleep." Gideon said, his voice regaining its iron authority. "Tomorrow, we stop being the prey. Tomorrow, we hunt the Empire."
