Chapter 61 - 61. The Veins of the Obsidian Heart

The Dark Matter Refinery of the Iron Peaks was not a structure built upon the earth; it was a parasite latched onto the very life of the mountains. Deep within the Gorges, where the tectonic plates ground against one another, the facility sat like a bloated, black spider. Its cooling towers belched out a thick, violet smog that turned the falling snow into a toxic, acidic slush, and its rhythmic, subterranean thrum could be felt in the marrow of anyone within five kilometres.

This was the source. The refined dark matter crystals processed here were the fuel for the Chimera Gates and the catalyst for the necrotic virus of Project Black Pulse. To the Obsidian Empire, this was their most sacred forge; to Gideon, it was a target that needed to be erased from the map.

Inside the temporary sanctuary of Station Zephyr, the air was sharp with the scent of ozone and sharpening stones. Gideon stood by a naturally occurring crystalline formation, his two Shining Stars rotating with a silent, lethal velocity around the central Void Point he had anchored the night before. His Tier-2, Level-5 refiner was humming at a frequency that made the very dust in the cave dance in geometric patterns.

"The refinery is guarded by a specialized division of the Imperial Void Guard." Reena said, her finger tracing a holographic map projected by a small tactical emitter. "At least thirty Tier-2 veterans, and at least three Tier-3 'Overseers'. But the real problem isn't the guards. It's the Stability Field. If we use too much external spirit energy, the dark matter tanks will go critical. We'll vaporize the entire gorge, including ourselves."

Nallan looked up from where he was feeding a concentrated fire essence stone to Igni. The Magma Scaled Salamander's eyes glowed with a predatory heat. "So, no Solar Flares? No big bangs? You're asking a fire soul to use a candle instead of a furnace, Reena."

"We are asking you to be a surgeon, Nallan." Gideon said, his voice carrying a hollow, resonant depth. He pulled his black tactical hood over his head, the mask sealing with a pressurized hiss. "We don't blow the tanks. We sabotage the Cooling Veins. If the thermal regulators fail, the refinery will undergo a 'Cold Shutdown.' The Dark Matter will turn into inert slag, useless for the towers."

Gideon looked at Jaice. The crow was almost invisible now, her glass like feathers refracting the dim light of the cave. The bond between them was a silent, cold thread of absolute intent.

"We move at 02:00 AM." Gideon said. "Reena, you and Arachne disable the external sensors. Nallan, you create a thermal diversion at the secondary waste exhaust. I'll enter through the intake vents with Jaice. Once the cooling veins are cut, we vanish. No lingering. No trophies."

The approach to the refinery was a descent into a nightmare of industrial rot. The wind here was erratic, buffeted by the massive intake fans of the facility. Gideon moved through the darkness, not as a physical entity, but as a localized low pressure system. With his Step of the Void completed, he didn't just hide from the wind; he became the empty space within it.

He reached the primary intake vent, a massive, rotating turbine that could shred a Tier-1 integrator in seconds. Gideon didn't slow down. He raised his hand, and the two Shining Stars flared.

[Skill: Sovereign Static Lock].

He didn't stop the fan with strength; he manipulated the air pressure around the blades until they hit a pocket of vacuum. The massive steel fins groaned, slowing to a crawl as the "drag" vanished. Gideon and Jaice slipped through the gap, entering the bowels of the obsidian beast.

The interior of the refinery was a labyrinth of glowing violet pipes and hissing steam. The spirit density here was so high it felt like walking through deep water. Gideon could feel the necrotic pulse of the dark-matter. It was a foul, oily sensation that tried to coat his spirit refiner.

'Sector 4. The Thermal Regulator.' Jaice signaled. 'Three guards. Tier-2, Level-4. They are wearing spirit insulated plates.'

Gideon moved like a ghost. He didn't draw his grey short sword. He reached the guards and performed a dual handed [Vacuum Pulse]. The air was sucked out of their helmets instantly. They collapsed without a sound, their hands clawing at their sealed visors in a desperate, silent panic.

He reached the regulator. A massive, crystalline heart pulsing with a rhythmic, sickening light. This was the throat of the refinery.

Gideon placed his palms on the crystal. He didn't use force, he initiated the Inverse Resonance of the Third Cycle. He began to draw the heat out of the crystal, feeding it into the void point of his own soul. The regulator began to frost over, the violet light dimming to a dull, stagnant grey.

"The veins are freezing." Gideon whispered.

Outside, the diversion was in full swing. Nallan had turned the exhaust sector into a localized volcanic eruption, and Reena's shadow silk had turned the perimeter guards into blind, panicked prey.

But deep within the command spire of the refinery, a different kind of spirit signature awoke.

To the Obsidian Empire, the Inquisition's 'Shadow Group' was no longer an annoyance. They were an infestation, a virus that had destroyed two towers and now threatened the very blood of the Empire's vengeance. They had sent their own cure.

Gideon was halfway out of the regulator chamber when the air in the hallway didn't just turn cold... it turned hollow.

'Gideon! Behind!' Jaice shrieked in his mind.

Gideon spun, his short sword leaving its sheath in a blur of grey steel. He didn't hit a guard. He hit a blade made of Black Glass.

CLANG.

The impact sent a shockwave through Gideon's arms that felt like a Tier-3 strike. Standing in the steam was a figure that mirrored Gideon's own. He wore jagged, segmented armor made of obsidian glass, and his face was hidden behind a mask that looked like a screaming skull.

This was the Empire's Anti-Inquisitor: Null Blade.

"The Republic's 'Brave Crow'?" Null Blade whispered, his voice sounding like two stones grinding together. "You are a small bird to be flying in such a dark forest."

Null Blade didn't have a monster partner on his shoulder. Instead, his shadow was sentient... a Void Wraith that flowed across the floor like spilled ink, its claws reaching for Gideon's shadow.

"You're late." Gideon said, his azure eyes glowing with a cold, predatory light. "The cooling veins are already dead."

"The refinery is a trifle." Null Blade replied, his black glass sword vibrating with a necrotic frequency. "I didn't come for the pipes. I came for the Stars in your soul." He lunged. He didn't use wind or fire; he used Entropy. Every strike of his blade sought to "unravel" the spirit energy it touched. When their swords met, Gideon felt his pure Wind-energy being sucked into the black glass, turning into inert dust.

"Tier-2, Level-5." Null Blade noted, parrying a vacuum strike with a flick of his wrist. "Impressive purity. But you are still a vessel of light. And light... is easily swallowed."

Gideon realized he couldn't win a traditional battle of attrition. The Anti-Inquisitor was likely a Tier-3 in a Tier-2's body, a specialist designed specifically to hunt other specialists.

"Nallan! Reena! Extraction now!" Gideon signaled through the comms. "We have a Null Signature in the core!"

He turned back to his opponent. Null Blade was moving with a 'Flicker Step' that bypassed the wind resistance Gideon relied on. The black glass sword slashed through Gideon's shoulder plate, the necrotic energy burning like acid.

Gideon didn't retreat. He leaned into the pain. He performed a micro circulation of the 2nd Step of the Third Cycle, a technique he hadn't even practiced yet. He threw his spirit energy not into his blade, but into the [Sovereign Dome].

He didn't expand the dome. He imploded it.

[Skill: Absolute Vacuum Collapse].

The air in the corridor vanished. The steam, the sound, and the heat were all sucked into a single point between Gideon and the Anti-Inquisitor.

For a second, the two voids met. Null Blade's entropy clashed with Gideon's vacuum. The black glass sword cracked, and the skeletal mask of the Imperial assassin showed a flicker of genuine shock.

"A void point?" he gasped, his voice thin in the lack of air. "You... you are a Tier-2. You shouldn't be able to touch the Void."

"I spent days in a forge made of my own screams." Gideon said, his voice reaching the his mind through the bond resonance. "Your 'entropy' is just a parlor trick compared to the wind."

Gideon followed up with a [Vacuum Blade] strike that wasn't aimed at the assassin's body, but at the Void Wraith shadow on the floor. The azure wind tore through the shadow entity, forcing it to retreat back into the Null-Blade's armor.

The refinery began to groan. A series of deep, subterranean booms echoed through the floor. The 'Cold Shutdown' had begun. The dark matter was destabilizing, turning into heavy, inert stone.

"This isn't over, Crow!" Null Blade hissed, his body beginning to dissolve into a cloud of black smoke. "The Empire has seen your face. There is nowhere in the Republic the shadows won't find you."

"Let them look." Gideon replied. "I'm everywhere."

Gideon didn't wait for the smoke to clear. He sprinted through the intake vents, Jaice guiding him through the dark as the refinery's emergency alarms finally began to wail.

He burst out of the facility just as Nallan and Reena reached the extraction point. Nallan's armor was scorched, and Reena's Arachne was missing a leg, but they were alive.

"The Anti-Inquisitor?" Reena asked, seeing the crack in Gideon's shoulder plate.

"He's a hunter." Gideon said, his eyes scanning the ridges. "And we're the prey now. The Empire has officially marked us as an 'infestation'. They're not just defending the towers anymore... they're hunting the Inquisition."

They didn't head back to Zephyr. They moved toward Outpost 14, a deep winter bunker hidden in the Perpetual Frost Fields. They needed a place where even an Anti-Inquisitor couldn't follow.

Inside the outpost, the air was freezing, but it felt clean compared to the refinery. Gideon sat on a crate, his hands shaking as he applied a healing salve to his shoulder. The gash from the black glass sword was stubborn, refusing to close easily.

He looked at his two companions. Nallan was quiet for once, staring at the embers of his fire. Reena was industriously repairing her spider partner with shadow silk. They were tired, battered, and they were being hunted by the most lethal assassins they have ever met.

Gideon pulled out his phone. He looked at the photo of Fareen. She was smiling, holding the wooden bison he had carved for her.

The Empire knows my face, he thought, a cold, heavy weight settling in his stomach. They'll look for the nest.

He looked at the two Shining Stars and the central Void in his spirit space. He realized that Tier-2, Level-5 was no longer enough. To protect the farm, he had to become more than a Striker. He had to become a Master.

"Nallan, Reena." Gideon said, his voice echoing in the cave. "Tomorrow, we don't strike a tower. Tomorrow, I finish the Third Cycle. I need you to guard the entrance. If that Null Blade finds us before I'm done... we won't make it to the solstice."

Nallan looked up, his orange eyes reflecting the fire. "The Third Cycle? Gideon, you've only been a Tier-2 for a month. You'll burn your soul out."

"The wind doesn't burn, Nallan." Gideon said, his eyes turning toward the dark entrance of the cave. "It just prepares the way for the storm. And the storm is almost here."

As the wind of the Iron Peaks howled outside, he closed his eyes and began to reach for the third star.
