Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4 - THE BRIDE WHO SHOULD'VE BEEN DEAD

Victor followed Emily across the bridge of mist, his footsteps echoing softly in the strange, vibrant night. Lanterns swayed overhead, casting shadows that twisted like dancers. Every face he passed belonged to someone who had died, yet their eyes held stories, laughter, even mischief.

"This… this place," Victor whispered, "it's… alive."

Emily smiled faintly, her gaze soft but tinged with sorrow. "Alive, yes. But only because the dead remember. The living forget too easily."

Victor swallowed.

"I—I didn't know promises were… so powerful."

"They are," Emily said, tilting her head.

"Especially vows of the heart. You spoke mine, even by mistake. And now… I am here, because of it."

Victor's chest tightened.

"But I'm already promised to… to someone else. Victoria."

Emily's smile faded.

"Ah, the living world… so full of rules. But here, rules are shadows. You cannot undo a vow, Victor. You can only face it."

Victor's eyes darted to the crowd of spirits. They moved gracefully, some dancing with joy, others frozen in sorrow. A skeleton in a top hat tipped his hat at him, grinning. Even in death, manners persisted.

"Is… is there no danger here?" Victor asked nervously.

Emily shook her head.

"The dead do not wish you harm. But they will teach you what the living never could. Watch, listen, and learn. This is your lesson."

Suddenly, music drifted across the air — a piano playing by invisible hands, a violin crying in harmony. Victor's heart ached. He realized it was not sad, not entirely. It was beautiful. Alive in its own way.

Emily reached out a hand, delicate and pale. "Come," she said.

"There is much you need to understand before you can return… or decide what kind of man you wish to be."

Victor hesitated, then took her hand. The chill of her touch ran through him, sharp yet gentle. Together, they walked deeper into the world of the dead, where promises lingered like incense and memories glimmered like stars.

And as the shadows danced around them, Victor knew, with a sinking certainty, that nothing — not life, not death, not love — would ever be simple again.

Author's Thoughts (Chapter 4)

Mysterious / Poetic:

In this chapter, Victor truly steps into the underworld. I wanted the Land of the Dead to feel alive, but in a way that's both beautiful and haunting. Emily is not a villain — she's a soul waiting for her vow to be fulfilled.
