Chapter 1 - Smoke and Neon Lights

'There are things in the world that cannot be explained by words, events and occurrences that make us wonder what is our place and purpose in life. We search for a grand goal and pave a road towards it, calling it our fate, a preordained mark that we have to aim for no matter what.

A mouse getting caught in a trap, a snake catching its prey and an eagle flying high up in the sky. Those are all creatures with one thing in common, survival, its in their genetic code, they have this feeling from the moment they come into existence and every step they take is towards that goal, survive.

It's the same for humans, we have the same goal, the same fate. We just mask it, using our memories and emotions to rephrase survival into what suits us better. Be it becoming rich, strong or having all the knowledge in the world, in the end it all comes down to the same instinctual need, to survive.

My understanding is that if you take away the power, the money and strip someone naked of all of their achievements, so that only his true self is exposed and point a gun to their head, their wouldn't be a single person in this world that wouldn't feel an instinctual fear. It is in our DNA, our most basic function is to survive.' With a click of a button the voices coming from an old radio faded into static, in a dimly lit room filled with smoke a lone man sat by a table.

"Sounds about right…" The young man muttered and with a push he got up, picking up a worn leather jacket that hang from a nail, he wore it and let out a sigh.

"Let's survive one more night." He said and opened the door, entering a world of loud music and blinding lights.

Alcohol, the smell of cigarettes and aromatic perfumes, all hang in the air and blinded the senses of everyone present in the crowd. Their bodies were loose, intoxicated, dancing and getting lost in the electronic rhythm that gave life to this place. A melody so strong that you could feel your every cell trembling, calling you to give in and let yourself go.

The lights flickered, one moment there was darkness and the next there was light, as if someone was taking a picture in a pitch black room. Every moment capturing a different emotion, all the people here were guided by their carnal instincts, the drugs in their veins and the drinks they had.

Among those that were lost in the rhythm's chaos moved the young man, shoulder to shoulder, pressed between bodies. Heat, sweat and the throb of bass, hands touching his body, lips brushing his ear. Every whisper an invitation, every touch a trap.

With every flash he would see a new face, he would feel a new tug, another attempt to make him succumb to the chaos. He was used to this and soon made his way to the bar.

 "The usual?!" Shouted the bar-woman.

"Yes, make it double!" Raising two fingers, he answered back and in moment he was served.

An iced glass of water, bubbles on the surface, as the pill tabs were fizzing at the bottom. She was still holding onto the drink, the young man looked at her and raised an eyebrow. Her skin caught the light, purple and almost glowing.

Leaning forward, on the wooden counter, she wore a fish-net T-shirt, leaving little to the imagination and her stance emphasized her alluring features even more. She gripped his shirt and pulled him close, her breath brushing his ear.

"The boss wants you at front door today, pretty boy." The music downed out her words to everyone else but him. Her smell was sweet like honey and her words entrancing, impossible to ignore.

"And my offer still stands." At breaths distance, with a flick of her forked tongue she touched his skin, her saliva like glue stuck to him.

With a wave of his hand, he broke her grip and pushed her back. Not giving her a second glance, he downed his drink and got lost in the crowd once more.

 ___

"We are finally here! Bitches!" Loud and obnoxious, waving her hands in the air, making gestures and attracting attention, wanting to be the center of the world.

"Oh! My! God! I have heard the best about this place!" She wasn't alone of-course, this kind of crazy goes in groups, it needs support to thrive.

"Yes giiirl! The Crooked Hat! We are going to get fucking wasteeed!" The trio kept on their act as they waited on the long line outside the night-club.

The moon hung high up in the sky and the streets were lit by the neon lights. It was lively in this part of the city, known best for its wide variety of nightly destination, from simple bars and clubs to the more...hard stuff. The city never slept, not around these parts.

"Hey, look...what a stud!" The young woman on the front of the group raised her finger to point towards the entrance of the club. She leaked her cherry blossom lips and a glint appeared in her eyes.

"Veronica is at it again you guys! When is she gonna learn that security guys are not fuckable material!" Her friend remarked, rolling her eyes.

"Nah girl, you crazy! He is tall, handsome and dangerous! Delicious!" An ebony woman with Afro-styled hair said, with a flick of her wrist. They continued their remarks, their voices lost in the crowd waiting to get in the club.

It was the most popular place to spend the night, The Crooked Hat, people wanting to forget and let themselves go, get lost in their desires and run away from their everyday problems, they all gathered outside. Patiently waiting for a chance at that kind of freedom.

Getting in wasn't easy, the nightclub promised safety above all else, it was a safe haven for everyone and violence wasn't permitted. A thorough check was made before entering, both physical and in papers. For that an experienced security-guard was needed.

"Next." One of the two front-door men called out, opening the door for the next guest to be checked. The examination was simple, identification, so that the guy wasn't some big time villain in disguise, petty theft and the like were excused.

"Okay, please proceed sir." Giving back the middle-aged man his I.D., he motioned with his hand towards his colleague, the young man from the bar. There was nothing unusual with him, just an everyday Joe.

"Welcome sir, I have to perform a physical test...are you okay with that?" He asked the guest and got a nod in return.

He scanned his body with a button, searching for any weapons, tapping every so often at parts to examine them further.

*Zing!...Zing!* The metal detector gave off an alert, with a side glance the young man looked at the other security man.

"Please take out any metal items you might have...sir." He had a towering stature, standing before any normal man would make them think twice before messing with him. One good look at his eyes was enough to see that he wasn't playing games.

"Tch...Must have forgot this on me...heh." With a grin the middle-aged man took out a combat knife from his belt, holstered just above his private parts. Was it for self-defence or some other reason, that was only known to him and his twisted mind.

People like him were regulars here, most of them gave their weapons without even being asked, but there were a few who thought themselves smart. Small time thugs, finding their bravery in holding a knife, feeling insecure without their trinket.

"Bones do we let him pass?" The young man asked his colleague named Bones.

"Nah...kick him out Adrian." He replied without even thinking about it. There were rules, literally written just before entering, obey them or get lost.

"Wait! It was an honest mistake! I swear!" Holding his arms up, he took a few steps back and shouted excuses.

Of-course Adrian wasn't a charity case, his job was simple, let people in or kick people out, there was no room for negotiation. And so he took a few steps towards him.

"I am going to have to ask you to leave." That was his first and final warning, he made sure to convey that with his tone turning serious and commanding. Adrian's sharp eyes, hiding behind his long-unkempt hair, locked onto the man who was refusing to leaving.

"Man, just let me have some fun! I won't do it again, I swear!" With his back against the glass reception window, he was cornered. Adrian noticed something was off with him, normally they wouldn't have to use violence and I most cases the people left after being ordered to do so. Not this one, this one wanted trouble.

The more this went on, the longer the costumers outside were waiting. Adrian knew what headache it would be if any of this were to reach the boss, so he decided to make quick work of him.

"Okay then...the hard way it is." With a snap of his arm, he grabbed the scrawny man by his clothes. Leaving no time for him to react, he followed up and swiftly tripped him using an efficient throw that had him on the ground.

Adrian's plan was to incapacitate him and make it easier to throw him out, that way this wasn't made into a big scene. The fall dazed the man and immediately Adrian was on top of him ready to deal the finishing blow.

*Slit!* A sharp pain made him pause mid-strike and take a good look at his abdomen. There he saw a short blade, embedded in him, quickly becoming dowsed in blood, his blood. The shock was only momentary as he looked back at the face of his attacker, only to see a grin wider than before.

"Got you!" He madly blurted out.

"This fucker!" *Bam!* Adrian's fist smashed into the guys front teeth, guaranteeing an appointment with a dentist and having him lose consciousness.

He got up and took a better look at his abdomen, the dagger was halfway in his wound, sticking out as blood dripped slowly to the ground. With no hesitation and a slight grimace, he quickly pulled it out and threw it in his pocket, so that the people outside wouldn't see.

The whole scene played out quick and he hoped that the stabbing went unnoticed, as he never once hesitated because of the wound.

"Yo...Adrian you good?" Bones saw what happened and came to check up on him, his tone was casual, not fitting for such an incident.

"Yeah...should close up in a minute. You got something to wipe the blood?" Adrian replied and Bones handed him a towel he had on him. He seemed unconcerned about the wound, which had already stopped bleeding.

Some personnel was called and had the guy tied up and later handed over to the police, but this had nothing to do with them, as they went back to their post and kept on working as if nothing had happened.

"Next." Bones called out and the doors opened once more.

---

"Oh! My! God! Did you girls see that! I wish he pounced on me like that!" The trio had finally reached the entrance and had first row seat to the brief fight inside. Their remarks continued to be vulgar and to attract attention.

"Veronica for the love of god!" Her friend replied.

"Stop playing hard to get Rexy! I know you wet down there!" The ebony woman, came up behind Rexy and tugged on her exposed string-underwear, a moan escaped her friend.

"Fuck you Susan!" And a middle-finger to go.

Bones opened the door for them and the trio entered, swinging their hips dangerously and seductively with every step they took. Adrian had taken notice of the women and their loud voices long before they reached the entrance, it seemed that the headache was inevitable.

"Please this way ladies, can I have your I.D's please." Bones with his professional tone asked, yet he couldn't hide the interest he had taken in the attractive women before him. Eyes catching a glimpse of their barely covered bodies and his imagination running wild.

"Here you go baby." Veronica gave all their identification, her hands brushing Bone's and a wink to seal the deal. She was a blonde, curly hair, voluptuous proportions that her clothes could barely hold hidden. The front door security man had a type and this woman was surely his kind of girl.

Bones shot her a smile in return and got to work on his computer, he attentively searched for any information that stood out and it seems that something got his attention. With a few clicks and some typing he had access to what seemed flight details of the three women.

"Did you three just arrive in the city today?" He asked.

"Yeees! Isn't that so exiting! We heard great things about this and that and wanted to see for ourselves...we aren't disappointed." The blonde replied with a coy smile, giving him the up and down.

Adrian watching this from the side, rolled his eyes, his wound stung him and he wanted the night to end, with no more surprise events and especially with no more annoying costumers. Despite his attitude, he still noticed that the trio a weird vibe around them, he just couldn't put his finger on it, their whole personality felt like an act, but he wasn't one to judge.

"No. We. Are. Not." Susan paused between her words, staring at Adrian and her gaze landing just below his waist.

"We are pleased, proceed." Bones guided them to form a line and wait for their physical check.

First was Veronica, confidently standing face to face with Adrian, she was a tall woman and her high stilettos made them even. With one hand on her waist she presented herself for the check-up. He was a man and her charms didn't go unnoticed, still while on the job he didn't let these kind of distractions affect him.

With the scanner in hand, he passed her sides and stomach with no sound, he refrained from touching too much and barely tapped her clothes. Reaching her abundant blossom, which seemed to be the center of her entire outfit, gave no results either.

"Please turn around." He bluntly stated, his job as a bodyguard meant that he should appear as apathetic and detached, this was all a persona. She turned and lightly bent backwards, her outlined tush brushed Adrian's soldier and surprised him.

"Sorry...a habit of mine, heh." Veronica gave him an implying glance and kept the stance for a moment longer, before standing again.

Adrian wasn't fazed and finished his examination, prompting the next woman to step forward as Veronica stepped to the side. Next was Rexy, a shorter more petit type of girl, with her head shaved on one side, she gave off a rebellious aura.

"Make it quick...and no touchy feely, got it?!" Her personality was more fierce and not as erotic, still her figure told otherwise, she wore nothing more that a bikini bra and shorts with underwear strings exposed and up to her hips.

The front side examination gave no sound and he had her turn around. He scanned from top to bottom and still no alert came from the device. His eyes landed at her curvy bottom for just a second.

"What are you looking at creep." She seemed to have eyes on the back of her head, as she swiftly turned around and left with him saying that he was finished. Adrian gave out a small sigh and motioned to the last woman to face him.

Susan stepped forward and locked eyes with him, her gaze hinting at desires better left unsaid. Her dark skin glittered and shined under the lights and her slightly bit, dark cherry lips gave Adrian a hard time keeping it together, she gave him the impression that she could jump at him at any moment, tear of his clothes and…

He wanted this to be over quick, so he scanned front and back without prompting for her to turn, her smell too was intoxicating. The scanner skipped the sensitive areas and he almost didn't touch her at all.

"How about here...these babies need attention." Pressing her arms together, her bosom almost spilled out of her clothes and gave Adrian a run for his money, he averted his gaze and motioned for her to pass. The examination was finally over and the trio gathered together, heading inside.

"Have fun ladies." Bones said, looking at their behinds that swayed.

"Oh we will." Susan replied with a grin, once she turned around her gaze shifted, becoming sharp.

The night had just started, people danced without a care, music and lights synced to create the perfect atmosphere. Bodies pressed together, temperatures rising, their blood boiling lost in the trance, they had no attention left to give for the trio that entered, wolves among sheep.
