Chapter 47 - Crossfire

Elena's POV:

The car ride home is worse than the flight. The tension is much heavier.

We landed almost an hour ago, and now we're on our way home. It's getting dark, and Adrian still stares at his stupid laptop.

I could bet a thousand dollars that he's not doing real work with that thing.

The driver's eyes stay focused on the road. I wish there was even a little bit of music to ease the tension. Just the hum of the engine and the sound of my own thoughts spiraling.

I fold my hands in my lap, and stare out the window, watching the city blur past. Streetlights streak gold and white against the dark, stretching into long lines as the car moves.

A while ago, Adrian had shed his suit, and rolled his sleeves up to his arm. He got rid of his tie too, baring the first three buttons as usual. And after running his hand through his hair for hours, it falls slightly over the top of his head.
