The night of the comet's fall arrived. The sky, usually a vast tapestry of silent stars, now held a single, brilliant focal point. The "Laughing Vagabond" comet blazed across the heavens, a spear of pure, joyful light growing larger by the second, its tail painting a silver streak over the Jade Basin.
In the cult's amphitheater, the ritual reached a fever pitch. The Fake Comet Altar glowed blood-red, its siphon beam thickening, reaching up towards the true comet like a greedy, corrupting hand. The cultists' chants became ragged screams as their life force was violently ripped from them. The Void Worm Host stood at the altar's base, his arms outstretched, his body a conduit for the horrific energy.
"Now!" Ye Xingliu yelled.
He and Shui'er exploded from their hiding place. Shui'er went low, summoning a localized hurricane of sand that slammed into the circle of cultists, breaking their concentration and disrupting the chant. The siphon beam flickered.
But the Host was ready. "Interlopers! You are too late! The Great Devourer shall feast!" Shadows coalesced around him, forming jagged, whip-like tendrils of void energy that lashed out at them.
Ye Xingliu didn't engage the tendrils. He had one goal: the altar.
He moved, a Drunken Meteor in a storm of shadows. He weaved past the lashing darkness, his senses pinpointing the altar's core—the point where the corrupting energy was most concentrated. The true comet was almost upon them, its light beginning to wash over the desert in a wave of pure, silver radiance.
The Host moved to block him, a shield of absolute darkness forming before the altar. "Your starlight is a pathetic candle before the void!"
Ye Xingliu didn't slow. He drew upon everything—the 40% Awakening in his core, the hidden star-vein in his cave, the essence of the Shadow Beasts, the boundless energy of the falling comet itself. He became a vessel of cosmic fury.
He didn't use the Laughing Star or the Drunken Meteor. He used the pure, unrefined principle of the Comet Fist: Motion. Impact. Joyous Chaos.
His fist, blazing like a miniature sun, met the shield of void. There was no sound, only a violent contradiction of existence. Light fought nothingness.
And light won.
The dark shield shattered like glass. Ye Xingliu's fist carried through, not striking the Host, but striking the Fake Comet Altar itself.
BOOOOM.
The obsidian structure exploded outwards. The blood-red siphon beam snapped. The backlash of corrupted energy screamed through the amphitheater, throwing cultists to the ground.
At that exact moment, the true "Laughing Vagabond" comet streaked directly overhead.
Freed from the corrupting influence, a pillar of pure, undiluted comet essence—a waterfall of liquid starlight and cosmic possibility—cascaded down, washing over the entire area.
The Void Worm Host shrieked, his form bubbling and dissolving in the purifying light. The remaining cultists, their connection to the void severed, collapsed, unconscious or dead.
And Ye Xingliu stood at the center of it all. He threw his head back and opened his arms, and the comet essence poured into him. It was not a thread or a stream, but an ocean. It was the answer to a thousand questions, the fuel for a million steps. It scoured his meridians, expanded his dantian, and reforged his very soul.
When the light faded, the comet was gone, continuing its eternal journey. The desert was silent once more.
Ye Xingliu stood panting, his body glowing from within. He pulled out the compass. The script shimmered, blurred, and then solidified.
Mortal Awakening – 80%
He was on the cusp of transcending the mortal realm entirely.
But that wasn't all. The star map on the compass glowed, and a new, intricate symbol—a stylized footprint wreathed in starlight—appeared in the corner. Knowledge flooded his mind: The Wanderer's Mark. He could now spend a vast amount of energy to place a single, permanent mark on a location. Thereafter, he could teleport back to it from anywhere, across any distance, so long as he had the power to fuel the jump.
His first thought wasn't of strategic strongholds or treasure vaults. He looked at the now-purified amphitheater, the place where he had seized his destiny from the void.
This is a good place to remember, he thought. A good place to be able to return to.
He focused his will, and the symbol on the compass flared. A tiny, silver footprint momentarily glowed on the sand at his feet before fading from sight.
The road was infinite. But now, he could always find his way back to the places that mattered.
