Chapter 8: Mr. Lynn, Please Save Me

Exiting the store, Lynn returned to the car with a pack of cigarettes.

"How'd you cut your finger? It's bleeding."

George Stacy frowned, noticing the smear of blood on Lynn's hand.

"Not sure. Must have pricked it on something by accident."

Lynn casually wiped the blood away and offered a cigarette to George.

"Be more careful next time. You're in your twenties, stop being so clumsy."

George took the cigarette, lit it, and hit the gas, heading for the precinct.

Lynn smoked, glancing at the shop in the rearview mirror.

'When normal people passed by that spirit and its catfish-eels, they didn't attack.'

Lynn guessed it was his own release of death energy that had triggered the eel to bite him.

It was definitely interesting, but unfortunately, there was no obsession for him to absorb.

And given the shape of that spirit, it would only last three days at most.

After three days, it would dissipate on its own.

Back at the precinct, George Stacy returned to his office to start sorting through cases, filing reports, and so on.

Lynn, bored and with nothing to do, went to chat with the female officers.

He called them female officers, but the figures on most of the policewomen in the precinct… hmm.

There were only two or three who were easy on Lynn's eyes.

The morning passed quickly.

After lunch, Lynn had just gone to the break room for a nap when George Stacy slammed the door open. "Lynn, let's go! Now!"

Getting up from the cot, Lynn grabbed his trench coat and put it on as he walked. "What happened?"

"Homicide at the psychiatric hospital. A patient ate two orderlies' brains."

"What?"

Hearing this, Lynn's hand paused on the car door. "You're saying... a patient ate two orderlies' brains?"

"What do you mean? Like in a zombie movie?"

"Pretty much."

George nodded and hurried Lynn into the car, then slammed the accelerator and sped toward the hospital.

When they arrived, the hospital was already on lockdown by the NYPD.

They crossed the police line and entered the scene. Looking at the grisly sight, Lynn couldn't help but frown.

The bodies of two orderlies lay on the floor, which was covered in blood.

Both bodies had empty, hollow left eye sockets. White brain matter was oozing from the openings.

The whole scene was, frankly, disgusting. Even the experienced George Stacy couldn't help but grimace.

They went to the security monitor. In the video...

A patient, who had a protrusion on his forehead about the size of half a thumb, suddenly grabbed one of the orderlies and bit down on his head.

The orderly struggled, but after a few seconds, his body went stiff and collapsed.

When the other orderlies in the hospital saw this, the more timid ones scattered in terror.

A few of the braver ones rushed forward to restrain the patient.

But even so, the patient managed to kill another person in the exact same way.

He even chewed and swallowed the eyeball and brain matter.

Watching the video, one of the officers gagged, covered his mouth, and ran out.

George Stacy, however, crossed his arms and frowned. "Lynn, this is... this is impossible."

"Even if a normal person had the strongest suction in the world, they couldn't bite through someone's brow bone in a few seconds, let alone suck out the eyeball and brain matter."

"This is definitely not something a normal person could do."

Lynn nodded, agreeing with George's analysis.

His gaze, however, turned to the crime scene.

It was strange. Other than the two bodies, their spirits weren't there.

Normally, whether a dead person had an obsession or not, their spirit would remain at the place of death for at least 12 hours.

But it had been less than an hour since the attack.

So, where had the two orderlies' souls gone?

"George, I'm going to see the patient. You run his background info."

"Right."

George Stacy nodded.

Led by the hospital director, Lynn soon arrived at the room where the patient was being held.

Standing outside, Lynn looked through the observation port in the door.

The patient with the large lump on his forehead was currently strapped tightly to the bed with restraints.

He wasn't struggling, but was crying continuously, muttering something.

"Ronak is incredibly strong. After he killed those two orderlies, it took eight of us to finally restrain him."

The hospital director explained from the side, "And that was only after he regained consciousness and realized what he'd done. That's the only reason we had a chance to restrain him."

"Otherwise, I'm afraid Ronak would have caused even more horrifying casualties."

Hearing the director's explanation, Lynn thought for a moment. "Open the door. I'm going in to talk to him."

"That's too dangerous!"

Seeing Lynn wanted to go in, the director quickly said, "Detective, don't be fooled because he's in restraints. If he has another episode, those straps won't hold him at all."

"I've already sent someone to buy iron chains. Maybe chains will…"

"Don't worry. I can handle this."

Faced with Lynn's confident assurance, the director had no choice but to nervously take out his keys and unlock the door.

Stepping into the room, Lynn's Super-Sense triggered instantly. He felt that the room—no, the patient himself—had an extremely unstable energy field.

There was still red and white residue around Ronak's mouth, which looked revolting.

But he didn't seem to notice. His eyes were streaming with tears, and he kept saying things like, "Oh God, what have I done?"

Sensing the abnormality, Lynn channeled his death energy into his eyes.

In an instant, his pupils turned a deep, dark green.

'Just as I thought.'

The souls of the two dead orderlies hadn't dissipated. They were trapped inside Ronak's body, struggling.

It seemed that when Ronak ate their brains, he had instantly devoured their souls as well.

Retracting his death energy, Lynn looked at Ronak, who now seemed lucid. "Mr. Ronak. I'm Detective Lynn, NYPD."

Hearing Lynn introduce himself, Ronak, on the bed, looked as if he'd seen a savior.

He immediately pleaded with Lynn, "Detective, please, you have to help me! I didn't mean to do it. Oh God, how could I do something like this? It was the devil! The devil made me do it! Mr. Lynn, please, you have to drive the devil out of my body!"
