What was that shadow moving through the darkness?
My body shifted halfway into wolf form without conscious thought, spine pressed against the crumbling stone wall behind me. The ancient masonry was ice cold against my skin, its chill seeping through my clothes and into my bones. Every instinct screamed danger, warning me not to move carelessly while something unknown stalked these ruins. The hair on my arms stood on end as primitive fear crawled up my spine, speaking in the wordless language that had kept my kind alive for centuries.
Something was very wrong in this place.
The atmosphere hung thick and oppressive around me, weighted with the stench of rotting vegetation and damp earth. Beneath those familiar scents lurked something sharper, more metallic. A smell that made my stomach clench with recognition.
Fresh blood.
