Leviathan of Dis is a story that Batarian slavers and pirates began to speak about around eight years ago. The origins of this story lie on the planet Jartar in the Hades Gamma cluster, named after the Solar System of Dis.
This story is about a massive living ship found in a crater on the planet Jartar. It was an enormous 'living' ship. Batarians swiftly denied any involvement in this event or any knowledge of it.
But Salarians had the pictures to prove it, and records of a Batarian Dreadnought visiting that specific solar system.
In the end, the story was true, and this 'organic ship' was actually a 1 billion-year-old reaper that someone destroyed, more like ripped to shreds by something powerful.
"Go, go, go!" Leila's A.S.P regiment rushed into a massive secret military complex found on Khar'Shan. It was huge, several kilometres long.
"Spread out and look for anything suspicious."
Over 211 years of Imperial existence, A.S.P. went through constant upgrades, from biological upgrades to Geass-based boosts related to mental performance and, of course, Power Armour upgrades.
After dealing with the last batches of Batarian resistance, the A.S.P captured scientists who were acting 'weird'.
In fact, they were so crazy and unhinged that the special forces needed to knock them down and scan them for such strange behaviour.
"Legion, scan the scientists."
The black armoured A.S.P began to scan detained, crazed scientists.
[Detecting irregularities in brainwaves. Possible outside interference.]
"Are our suits protected?"
[No light or sound-based frequencies can interfere with the suit as we designed them to be hermetically sealed.]
"Understood, the source of the interference could be inside this huge base.
Locate the core chamber."
[The core chamber is over 2.5 kilometres big. Initial scans show that content in the chamber is… strange.]
When the A.S.P heard that, they got suspicious, and they immediately activated 'danger' protocol. That includes possible AI interference.
"Delta Squad to Saint Joan." The squad captain contacted the flagship that was above them.
"This is Saint Joan's Command. What can we do for Delta Squad?"
"Request Legion isolation. We are about to enter a possible area of compromise." The captain said to the ship's command.
"..."
"One moment, contacting Empress."
A couple of moments later, the Command returned.
"This is Saint Joan's Command. The Empress permitted you to isolate AI. You may continue."
Sure enough, the black-clad A.S.P. tactical team poured into the chamber, their tactical visors picking up a massive object in the centre of the chamber.
It was a grey metallic monstrosity.
[Warning, detecting low sound frequency, analysing patterns.]
The HUDs began to scan and analyse.
[Ultra low but constant burst of sound waves detected. These waves interfere with the anatomy of biological hearing. Constant exposure could impact brainwave performance.
While not dangerous now, constant exposure could lead to a loss of mental performance.]
Legion's explanation made the A.S.P. frown. How can a metal construct of that size do something like that to a biological lifeform?
Thankfully, the suit parameters indicate that the GN field and the hermetic seal around it are interfering with these sound waves.
The men began to hack the consoles plugged into the massive metal construct.
"It's a machine… a massive two-kilometre machine. It's bigger than our Excalibur-class battleship."
…
…
…
"Pitiful, they had this thing for 8 years, and they barely scratched the surface." The A.S.P. was digging through the consoles. By this point, more field agents had arrived, bringing specially prepared containers that isolate all sound waves.
The Imperial Special Forces realised that every part of this machine emits these strange ultrasonic and infrasonic sound waves.
In fact, the geass users who took control of the batarians revealed that they were worshipping this corpse as some sort of machine god.
After hours of digging through files, they found some disturbing things.
This thing was an AI spaceship, and its hull was made from biomass. In other words, someone refined this biomass into metal. They detected DNA residue in its composition.
But what is most disturbing is that this thing is old, like very old; the estimations of its age are around 1 billion years.
However, this makes no sense if there are machines that are that old, yet the most advanced race is theirs… then where are the other races? Who made these guys?
These revelations caused the Special Forces to creep out.
Not just them, as when the Empresses arrived to check it out, they got creeped out. Their Innovator senses… the sixth sense was telling the sheer danger this thing holds. Like, its nature is super wrong, and it's dangerous to life itself.
"Any ideas what this thing is?" Leila asked the captain of Delta Squad. The Empresses were dressed in Power Armours, as the A.S.P. regiment warned them about the dangers of this dead machine…
"The files that legion recovered are well… strange… all that we understood is that this machine periodically harvests biological lifeforms and turns them into metal-like biomass, assuming making more of them.
When I say periodically, it could be every hundred thousand years or more. There is nothing much to say as the AI is dead; Legion didn't find any corruption in its sequences after checking these files.
However, we will use isolated Overseer software to check if isolated Legion was compromised just in case." The Captain explained to them.
"This is insane! Harvesting biological lifeforms? Is that why there are no other aliens? There could be more of them!" Leila was utterly speechless and horrified! Did they crack the code? Is that why there is no other super-advanced species? This machine, or these machines, are harvesting periodically, like…
"Like this whole galaxy is a farm…" The Empress's eyes widened as she recalled how Marcus was worried and mentioned to her that when he used the thought accelerator, he could sense 'cold metal' at the edges of the galaxy, like something was waiting there for them.
"!!!"
"Quickly send a message to Avalon! Send a message and photo of this thing. We need Marcus here right now! He needs to see this!"
The Empress realised something, something big! The Protheans didn't vanish; these machines harvested them like… food!
These machines turned the Prothean Empire into some sort of biomass metal and created more of themselves.
And if this thing is a billion years old… then how many of them exist now?
"R-Right! At once." For a second, the A.S.P were surprised by the outburst, but they swiftly reacted and began to assemble a message for the Emperor's Flagship that was in Eden Prime.
~~~~~~Later With Marcus After the Message~~~~~~
"You must keep your people away from the Reaper! Dead or not, it can still indoctrinate!" Javik said to Marcus the moment he handed the tablet back.
"If that thing emits anything, especially sound-based, we will detect it. In fact, we use sound to generate gravitational fields; there is no one more advanced than us when it comes to sound." Marcus was confident enough when it came to sound technology.
He is utilising the very same method to track things in his solar systems. Anything that moved through the fabric of reality leaves a trail, and he has tech to pick that up.
"You don't know what the reapers can do." Javik wasn't that confident.
"Indeed. That is why we will find out." With that said, the shuttles returned, and the Prothean looked up.
He nearly lost his footing when he saw the sky full of ships!
Especially two of them.
'That size… It's enormous!'
As they got into the shuttle, they began to fly back into Avalon.
"Can I see it?" Lacus asked him.
"Here." Marcus gave her the tablet as he returned to his thoughts. He wondered about his luck; it was going far too well for him.
The amount of details he got in Reapers before they even arrived is far too good. He estimates that he should be able to persuade the Citadel Council. But even if they start to prepare, will it be enough?
The question is: how many reapers exist?
"Javik, how many of the reapers did your people estimate exist?"
"...We didn't have a chance to figure that out. The contact with colonies ceased the moment Reapers entered through the Citadel and severed the contact throughout the entire empire.
But our estimation is hundreds of thousands of those enormous ships, and that is not mentioning their smaller Destroyers that exist as well." Javik explained with a pondering look.
"..."
Marcus felt a chill pass through; he estimated in ten thousand before. But who knows? Maybe in the galaxy he is living in, it could be more than he remembers from the game he played centuries ago.
Well, the numbers are worrying, but the defences he has built around his empire, specifically the Solar Cannons, should shred a lot of them. On top of that, Reapers utilise kinetic barrier technology as defence.
His beam technology is superior against kinetic barriers.
"I see."
As they returned to Avalon, Anna and her crew remained on Eden Prime. They were creeped out by the alien ship and decided that staying in the Bunker was a far better choice.
In fact, they went to look for other Prothean ruins, as there were many of them on the planet, and the bunker was left to Lloyd and the G-Force's regiment.
~~~
Arrival of Avalon and a portion of Marcus' retinue in Khar'Shan was a big deal. It should be, as the massive mothership blocked the sun, and soon enough, the news of the Emperor's Retinue spread through the whole Citadel Space.
The thing was, the ship was far bigger than anything known in the galaxy, even bigger than the Citadel!
The citadel was over 43 kilometres long, while the Camelot Class was 60 kilometres. So when STG, which was still sneaking around trying different methods, was terrified shitless when in Khar'Shan orbit a mammoth of a ship with a huge escort appeared!
"S-Send images back to Surkesh! Immediately!" The leader of the STG group barked orders with fear. They need to send this back to their homeworld! This discovery was big!
The Empire was even more dangerous than they had envisioned!
"Send!"
"J-Just how strong an anti-gravity engine do they have to allow something like that to enter the orbit! It's madness!"
"Well, it proves the fact from their codex that they can build massive buildings in space." The last Salarian tried to sound a bit optimistic.
"All of you snap it out and return to your work. We need to figure out what the Emperor is doing in this world.
He wouldn't come here all the way from Exodus Cluster for no reason." The squad leader barked at his subordinates.
"The Batarian home system doesn't have that tower thing on its sun. If we stay a large distance away, they shouldn't be able to track us." One of them suggested.
"You mean we can do a silent run and drop a squad of agents down? That could work." STG is known for doing crazy missions, and this was no different.
As Salarians were preparing for a mission, shuttles left the Avalon and flew down into the planet below.
Soon enough, Marcus greeted two of his wives, dressed in power armours.
"Good to see you."
Both of them wanted a hug, but then they realised that they would get in the way of each other. That led to a staring competition.
Marcus simply sighed as he hugged both of them at the same time for a couple of moments before he pulled back and introduced the newest addition to his Empire.
"Ladies, this is Javik, the last Prothean." As the Emperor said, the helmet retracted, revealing the Prothean.
"Whoa…"
"There is one who survived the purge?" Leila looked surprised.
"Yes. I hope you used protective means against the reaper!" Javik got snappy, clearly on edge, from experience.
"We did. A.S.P. figured out that the machine's corpse still has power and is emitting ultra-low-frequency sound from all over its body.
To counter it, we use the armours and an array of GN Fields and gravitational barriers." Leila replied, realising that the Prothean had indeed been erased by this race of machines, which made her extremely worried.
"And… are they called Reapers?" The blonde Empress asked them.
"Yes. I will summarise everything I know once we leave." Javik doesn't want to repeat himself over and over again.
"Good for now, put the helmet on, and we need to inspect that thing." Marcus nodded as they began to walk towards the interior of the massive construct.
Javik immediately noticed something. Batarians were sitting aimlessly on the ground, their hands and legs locked up.
"They are indoctrinated." He only needed a single glimpse.
"Reaper's main method of fighting. They turn species against themselves. Once the main fleet arrives, these batarians would assist reapers by lowering the defences." The Prothean Commander said with a matter-of-fact tone.
"We used our own methods, they replied that they worship the machine god or the sleeping god; their mental faculties have deteriorated considerably," Leila added her two bits.
"I am impressed that you were able to learn anything at all. Is it this…Geass power?" Javik's question made Leila and Kallen look at the Emperor.
"Prothean physiology, he only needed to touch one of us, and he would experience things like that," Marcus explained to them as he felt their gaze on him.
After walking for a bit, they passed the huge doors, and Marcus' gaze fell on the dead Reaper.
"Damn, it is a dead reaper," Javik commented as he was in shock.
"We took some of them down, but it was minimal; they shredded our defences to bits. Never seen one of the big ones get mutilated like this."
The Prothean was right; someone has utterly beaten the shit out of the reaper. Though the Emperor knew who it was, it was the older race in the galaxy, the Leviathans, the ones that created the 'Intelligence'. The very same intelligence that created Reapers after concluding that AI can't coexist with biological life.
But that's stupidity on its own. AI is just like biological life; it requires nurturing and slow growth. If you rush, you'll end up in a situation like Geth… well, Geth aren't hostile; it's that the Quarians started panicking and raised their weapons against them.
The Geth began to defend themselves and pushed the Quarians out of their Homeworld. While Reaper AI is different, it was built big and began feeding all sorts of data without developing an understanding of what it was collecting.
What is biological life and synthetic existence? It was the apex of the Leviathan race's hubris, as they thought that if they made a computer, it would just work.
Of course, the AI collected the data and, from that data, decided that synthetics and biological life can't coexist. The first thing the AI did was turn on its creator and create the first Reaper based on its image. A huge warship that had the same abilities as Leviathans.
"Yes, someone of similar size took on it and wasted it," Marcus commented as he walked forward.
"The barriers hold, Legion. How are you feeling?"
[Everything is fine on my side. The ship's AI is dead; I can check whatever data files remain. The ship is very old, while most of the systems are down, the internal clock and some of the systems are still online.] Legion replied as Marcus checked the power suit's HUD; the AI raised files for him.
"Then proceed with downloading files and isolating whatever AI presence there is." The Emperor instructed Legion.
[Already sorted out whatever there is. The AI consciousness is severely damaged; however, I could recover some of it.]
"You should destroy it! The reapers in my era took over machine races; they got hacked." Javik exclaimed.
"I wouldn't be crazy enough to allow reaper AI to access anything." Marcus rolled his eyes at him.
"I thought as a hunter race, you know how to hunt your prey."
"..." The Prothean Commander stared at him for a second. What is he getting at?
"First… I already have an idea of how to make them extremely fragile. In fact, I got this idea now." The Emperor declared as he walked over to one of the reaper's 'tentacles'.
"These machinesconstantly emit a specific sound frequency. We can weaponise that."
"Wait, hold a second… You want to use resonance?" Leila exclaimed as she was surprised.
"Indeed, we will weaponise their own power against them." Marcus nodded at his wife.
"Is that even possible?" Javik was intrigued but sceptical.
"It's not that it's possible or impossible, it's something we can already do." The Emperor replied as he looked away from the raised files on the HUD to look around.
"Let me show you what I mean."
For a couple of seconds, he looked around for a target.
He found a piece of a reaper's leg that Batarians cut away. With a target set, he summoned another window on his HUD, adjusted the sound prequencies to the reaper signal, and then did the reverse. With that set, he made a sound rifle out of his right-hand gauntlet.
"Watch this."
Marcus then pointed at his new target and shot.
A sonic boom rushed towards the leg, and upon hitting, there was a ringing sound. The rest of the reaper ringed as well, but the piece that got hit by the direct soundwave began to crack like glass.
"..."
The Prothean Commander looked baffled at what he saw.
"See? Mastery over sound." The Emperor commented with a small smirk.
"Now imagine that shooting from a Solar Cannon?" He added with an even bigger smirk.
"That's assuming that they will not adjust. Those are AI machines that should be adapting." Leila said with crossed arms.
"That's assuming that they will find out that their indoctrination is being weaponised against them." Marcus countered at his wife as he lowered the rifle.
"True, I can relax a bit knowing that we found a potent weapon." The blonde Empress sighed in relief. They had a considerable advantage against current species, but then these machines popped up, and now they have the advantage again.
"Indeed. But this isn't over, we can weaponise sound further, I suppose I got myself a new research subject." Marcus looked at the reaper; he was going to gut it further.
'Maybe I can find that other dead reaper as well.' The Emperor recalled that there was another dead reaper that was floating next to the Gas Giant.
'Now to recall the cluster and solar system.'
For a second, he pondered, but then immediately recalled.
'Right…Hawking Eta, Close to Galactic Core.'
Marcus realised that he could use the Mass Relays to get there quickly and then return.
"You can do that later. Now, what should we do about the planet?" Leila looked at him; he was getting excited to make more weapons, but she swiftly burst his bubble and reminded him that they were on the Batarian homeworld.
"Right. Let's get out of here first, then talk about Batarian Homeland." He motioned for them to leave. Talking next to a dead reaper is a bit weird and wrong.
"You read my mind." Leila looked at the civilisation-ending machine one more time before starting to walk away.
The rest of the group followed after her.
~~~
"So, what are you going to do about Kallen's little misadventure?" Leila looked at Kallen for a second, who looked away with crossed arms.
"Euphemia is setting up meetings; from the looks of it, it will be several days of meetings. Since we started with treaties that the Empire will sign, and now we have Batarian slaves." Marcus replied as he looked at two of his wives sitting before him.
He brought them back to his Avalon.
"I hope we are not giving an inch?" Leila asked the obvious.
"Of course not. However, I do look for the middle ground when it comes to relays. I suppose I can move one of the relays to a good spot in Arcturus Stream.
Something like a gateway solar system that we can easily defend." The Emperor said what he had in mind.
"That is a good idea. Since we can use those relays as well. Plus, Arcturus Stream is full of useless solar systems."
Leila said with a pondering tone. They discovered that Arcturus Stream is a cluster with many useless solar systems, since the most common type of sun in these systems is a large, white one that is extremely radioactive and bright.
Setting up colonies with that kind of sun is extra hard, as the entire planet would need excessive shielding. It's ten times worse than what he did in Jupiter and Saturn.
These kinds of suns are good for easy solar power systems, but not for colonial expansion.
That is why finding Benning in such a cluster was lucky.
Utterly opposite in what they find in practically every single solar system. Frozen rocks, gas giants and barren worlds.
Barren worlds are a gamble, and they take longer to colonise. Marcus tested it out in the Regel system in Alpha Centauri.
The third solar system. It had two planets. One is a Gas Giant, and the other is a planet sandwiched between a massive Gas Giant and a Sun.
Radiation and heat were absurd, but Marcus used that world to test extreme terraforming. His engineers devised powerful radiation deflectors installed at the poles and the equator, followed by heat shields in orbit, thereby creating a sufficiently strong shield to colonise the planet.
With that change, there are four habitable worlds in the entirety of Alpha Centauri. An absurd record that not even the home system of Sol can achieve, well, Sol has space colonies, but those don't count when the talk is about settled worlds.
And so Alpha Centauri has a population rivalling Sol's. Because of that, Marcus handed the world to one of his sons, as solar systems like these require in-depth governance, given that it's one of the top exporters of Nano Metal needed for the construction of orbital elevators.
Regardless, it's not the only solar system that is a record holder. There is a contender for that, the Trappist system. However, so far, it has only three of the four possible planets.
The fourth world should be colonised when the population needs adjustment, as Marcus left this system after finding it quite boring. He simply colonised the best world and moved on, and that was close to 150 years ago.
"True… I am a bit dissapointed how bad our local cluster is." The Emperor complained.
"Well, Exodus and Petra make up for it." Leila smiled slightly as she recalled how sad Marcus was that Arcturus Stream was so shit.
The Emperor spent close to a century in this part of the Galaxy. Thankfully, it was not wasted, not at all. He learned, adjusted and improved colonisation and terraforming technologies.
Barren, toxic, tidally locked, greenhouse worlds, or even Gas Giant moons, he could change any of those worlds in a matter of months.
"Indeed, and we are only starting." The Emperor stroked his chin, thinking about what to do next.
"Anyway, let's check out what Khar'Shan has to offer. We have several days before I go to visit Citadel.
I will require your help, Javik." Marcus talked to Leila and Kallen first before looking at the silent Prothean.
"I will do my part, don't worry, Emperor of Humans," Javik said with a matter-of-fact tone.
"Yeah, we don't call ourselves humans. That's a term for textbooks. Plus, the more exact world would be innovator since we evolved again." The Emperor grimaced for a bit. It's weird getting called like that.
"That is true, very well, Emperor of Innovators, I shall assist you in persuading the Citadel Council. However, I am not a diplomat."
"We don't need diplomats for that. We will bluntly show them the evidence we have acquired; if they listen, it's fine; if they don't, it's as well. After all, there will be more of the galaxy for my Empire to colonise." Marcus shrugged. He was ready for the Reapers, but what about the rest?
~~~
Salarians did their planned stealth run, but it was not so silent because they don't understand the fundamentals of how the radar system of the Empire works.
Especially with Avalon in orbit, any anti-gravity effects, like those of a spaceship, are immediately noticed. By this point, the Empire already knew that it was Salarian. The Central Command recorded several instances of these ships in Imperial Space, and the Command Bridge on Avalon had the updated data before they left Imperial Space.
The Command Bridge of Avalon immediately noticed that a Salarian ship had sneaked into Khar'Shan, and they sent small stealth scout ships after it.
Leading them were the G-Force and the A.S.P.; after all, the Emperor was on the planet, which automatically meant that security was tighter.
"We shall find out who these sneaking amphibians are! Our pride as G-Force is on the line!" Jerimiah, the Commander of G-Force, clenched his fist dramatically. His zealous men seriously nodded; among them were several knights who had their Gundams ready…just in case.
And so the stealth ships left the hangars and followed the Salarian ship's route. What they found was that the Salarians had dropped a team of three in camouflage technology. These devices hide their heat signatures and reflected light, so, in a sense, they are invisible. Still, Imperials long ago discarded something as basic as light reflection or heat signature.
Instead, the Empire utilise vibrations, sound and light particles that move through the very fabric of space and time.
The G-Force saw right through them, could follow where they were going, and watch what they were doing.
Such a course of action is to collect all the evidence they need on these Salarians, so that if they do anything, they will have proof. In a sense, this is a Casus Belli on them.
They will have a reason to invade these Salarians, as the Salarians repeatedly enter their territory and even try to follow their Ruler.
Such things are not acceptable.
~~~
"Team, we landed successfully. Our job is to find what these Imperials are trying to acquire!" The Salarian Commando leader said in a courageous tone as they rushed towards the massive complex of research facilities.
The Salarians haven't seen such a massive building before.
It's like the building was made to hide something huge!
As they rushed through the jungles, they arrived at a clearing in the distance, where the Imperials erected a temporary camp next to the building complex.
"Those flags, I can assume they represent the retinues that have arrived on this world. I have counted three, that one I can assume belongs to the Empire itself, so four of them." The Salarian Commando commented as he was using binoculars to check.
"Banners like these… It's a monarchy thing, isn't it?" Another Salarian commented. It sounds primitive to them. As the monarchy didn't find footing in their civilisation, but from the looks of it, these Imperials took it to the stars, and that alone is concerning, as there were some crazy Salarian monarchs, which is why they didn't last for long.
And from that experience, they can deduce that the entire galaxy's peace will hang in the balance on how several people are feeling.
Like now, the Empire invaded Batarians because they attacked a Prince; nothing happened to him. Yet, the Prince's mother invaded, causing another Empress to join, and now the Emperor himself has arrived with an enormous armada.
"It is, I haven't seen anything like this before, only in historic records. These are not holograms either, but proper banners made of some sort of cloth.
That's… very old style." This observation made the Salarian realise that there could be even more old-school things in this empire.
'Hopefully they don't have honour battles to death, or something as primitive as that.' The Commando was worried that these Imperials could capture them and then make them fight in some battle pits instead of a usual prison cell.
"Indeed…"
As they were about to start taking pictures and videos, they saw the soldiers in the camps begin to move away from the building.
"What are they doing? Are they rigging up the building to blow up?" One of the observing Commandos asked, a bit worried, they needed to find out what was hiding in that massive complex after all.
"Can't be! They are not barbarians like the Krogan, I hope."
'It would be embarrassing to find out that barbarians are more advanced than we are…'
But then a massive beam struck from the sky, shredding the ceiling of the complex! It was an extremely huge beam of light that came from the massive spaceship in orbit! It was kilometres in length!
The blast was so powerful that the Salarian nearly flew away like a kite.
"T-They are bombarding the whole place! No way!" The Commander was holding a tree for dear life as he was looking at the massive beam.
However, after the initial burst of wind, there was nothing else.
Hell, they can walk normally… but the beam was still beaming!
"L-Look! That beam is raising something from the building!"
"...T-Thats…" The trio of Salarians stared in awe at how a massive grey ship, similar to an aquatic creature, was being raised from the building.
"...That beam… It's an actual tractor beam. The Imperials developed those?" Salarian swiftly began to film what he was looking at.
But then…
"Oof!!!"
"Agh!?"
"Huh?" The filming guy turned around, and his eyes widened as there was a small army of Imperials looking at him.
"Taste my fist of Loyalty, Alien Scum!" Jeremiah delivered a straight boxing punch to the unsuspecting and flabergasted Salarian, who didn't even consider that their early warning systems would not pick them up at all!
The punch knocked the Salarian out cold.
"Huh, they are softer than I thought." Jeremiah looked at his gloved hand.
"Father, can you not embarrass me like that? Seriously, Fist of Loyalty?" A male voice said from the side as a young adult male walked over, dressed in a G-Force Commander uniform.
"Pff, Younger generation." Jeremiah scoffed at his son. Why doesn't he understand the depths of his loyalty to his Emperor!?
"Don't start with that. I am more than loyal enough to my Emperor, only that I don't announce it like you." His son rolled his eyes as he walked over and inspected the knocked-out Salarians.
"Unbelievable how far these amphibians will go."
"Hmph, they have no decency, trying to sneak into a world where our esteemed Emperor is! Such an act alone could lead to a war!" Jeremiah began to spin a tale, but his son stopped him.
"I doubt we will go to a war. Our Emperor is going to be busy for a decade or two with that thing over there."
Everyone looked upwards at the reaper that was getting pulled into the Avalon that was in low orbit.
"That is a possibility," Jeremiah concluded.
