Chapter 7 - "Behind the Glass windows"

The final bell rang.

A sharp, echoing sound that carried through every corridor, every classroom—signaling the end of exams.

And with it—

A wave of relief.

Students poured out of their classrooms, their voices rising again after hours of silence. Some laughed, some complained, some debated answers as if their lives depended on it.

The school was alive again.

Amidst the crowd—

She walked quietly.

Unhurried.

Unbothered.

Della.

Her steps were steady, her expression calm, as if the exam had been just another ordinary task.

No excitement.

No anxiety.

Just stillness.

"Hey."

The voice came from behind.

Della turned.

Melissa stood there, her arms loosely crossed, a small smile resting on her lips.

"You're really lucky," Melissa said.

Della blinked slightly.

"Why?"

Melissa stepped closer, her smile widening just a little.

"Because you get a chance to meet Jacob personally."

A pause.

Della tilted her head slightly, confusion evident in her eyes.

"I'm sorry… I don't understand."

Melissa let out a soft laugh.

"You're going to receive the scholarship, right?"

Della's eyes softened with realization.

"Oh…"

"Congratulations," Melissa added warmly.

Before Della could respond—

Melissa pulled her into a hug.

Unexpected.

Gentle.

For a moment, Della froze.

Then slowly—

She relaxed.

"Oh… thank you," she said softly.

Just then—

An announcement echoed through the corridors.

But this time—

The voice was different.

Familiar.

Deep.

Controlled.

Jacob.

"Will the top-ranked student please come to the principal's office? We're getting late."

The moment his voice spread through the building—

Something shifted.

Della's gaze lifted slightly.

Melissa stepped back, her expression unreadable for a split second.

Then she smiled again.

"Go, go—quickly!"

Della nodded.

And turned.

Walking away.

Julia appeared almost instantly beside Melissa.

"Listen," she whispered, eyes gleaming, "the principal's office is visible from outside."

Melissa frowned slightly.

"So?"

"We can see everything through the big windows," Julia added, excitement barely contained. "Come on."

Melissa hesitated.

"No… we should go home," she said quietly. "What if someone sees us? What will they think?"

Julia rolled her eyes.

"Oh, come on. We'll watch quietly. No one will notice."

Melissa didn't move.

For a moment—

She looked toward the direction Della had gone.

Something flickered in her expression.

Uncertainty.

Curiosity.

Something else.

Then she exhaled.

"…Alright."

The two of them moved quietly along the outer corridor, their steps careful, almost secretive.

They reached the side of the principal's office.

Large glass windows reflected the fading daylight.

From here—

Everything inside was visible.

Della stood at the door.

She raised her hand.

Knocked gently.

"May I come in, sir?"

Inside—

Jacob's voice responded instantly.

"Come in."

She stepped in.

The door closed softly behind her.

And just like that—

The moment began.

Jacob sat across from her, his posture composed—but his attention completely fixed.

For a brief second—

Neither of them spoke.

Then—

"So," Jacob began, his tone calm, "you topped this year?"

Della nodded quietly.

No words.

Just a simple acknowledgment.

Jacob studied her.

Carefully.

As if trying to match her presence with the memories in his mind.

The pool.

The rain.

The hallway.

Everything aligned.

It was her.

"Alright," he continued. "What's your name?"

A small pause.

Then—

Her voice.

Soft.

Barely above a whisper.

"Della."

Jacob leaned forward slightly.

"What did you say?"

"…Della."

He stood up.

Slowly.

Pulled another chair closer.

And sat beside her.

Closer now.

Too close.

Outside the window—

Julia's eyes widened.

Melissa didn't move.

"What was that again?" Jacob asked, his voice quieter now.

"Della," she repeated.

Jacob's gaze didn't leave her.

Then—

He reached forward.

Gently.

And dragged her chair closer.

The space between them disappeared.

He placed his files beside her, shifting everything as if the formal setup no longer mattered.

"Della… Dixon," she added softly.

Jacob's lips curved faintly.

"Good," he said.

Then, after a brief pause—

"You should also raise your voice to top level."

Outside—

Julia leaned closer to Melissa, whispering quickly.

"Didn't you say you're Jacob's manager's daughter?"

Melissa didn't respond.

"And that you come and go with him all the time?" Julia continued. "That you two are in a relationship?"

Still nothing.

Julia's voice sharpened slightly.

"Then what is this?"

Something snapped.

"I didn't know she would come between us!"

Melissa's voice came out louder than she intended.

Sharp.

Raw.

Uncontrolled.

And in that moment—

Her hand hit the nearby flowerpot.

It tipped.

Fell.

Shattered.

The sound echoed.

Loud.

Breaking the stillness.

Inside—

Jacob's attention shifted instantly.

His eyes moved toward the window.

A flicker of alertness passed through him.

Without a word—

He stood up.

Walked over.

And pulled the shutters closed.

The outside view disappeared.

Cut off completely.

Julia stepped back slightly, eyes wide.

"Look…" she whispered.

"He's started hiding everything now."

Melissa stared at the closed shutters.

Her expression unreadable.

"There must be something going on," Julia added. "What if they're dating?"

That was enough.

Melissa turned sharply.

Her jaw clenched.

Her eyes burned—not with tears, but something stronger.

Anger.

Hurt.

Disbelief.

Without another word—

She walked away.

Her steps heavy.

Fast.

Unsteady.

Julia hesitated for a moment—

Then followed.

But even she could tell—

Something had changed.

Inside the room—

Silence returned.

But it wasn't the same.

Not anymore.

Because now—

The outside world had been shut out.

And for the first time—

Jacob and Della were alone.

Truly alone.

Jacob turned back toward her slowly.

His expression different now.

Less formal.

More… focused.

"You don't seem surprised," he said.

Della didn't respond immediately.

Her gaze remained steady.

Calm.

Then—

"Should I be?" she asked softly.

That one question—

Shifted everything.

Because now—

It wasn't just Jacob observing her.

She was observing him too.

And somewhere, deep beneath the surface—

The mystery between them had just begun to unfold.
