Chapter 14 - Part 4

The morning air carried a brittle chill, the kind that hinted at both change and danger. The Verden estate seemed unusually quiet, as if holding its breath in anticipation. Liana felt the tension pressing against her chest with every step she took through the polished hallways. The whispers of servants, the glances from her parents, the echo of Darius' warnings from the day before—they all coalesced into a heavy weight she could not ignore.

Adrian intercepted her in the library, his expression more serious than ever. "Today, Liana," he said, voice low, "Darius will escalate his plan. He will attempt to corner you, to force a moment where your secret can be revealed. You must be sharper than ever, quicker than ever, and more cautious than ever."

Liana's chest tightened. "And if… if I fail?" she whispered, voice barely audible.

"You will not fail," Adrian said, placing a firm hand on her shoulder. "Because Eren will be there. Because your heart is braver than you know. And because this… love… is worth every risk. Trust yourself, trust him, and endure."

A shiver ran through her, not entirely from fear. The weight of responsibility, the thrill of danger, and the undeniable pull of forbidden love all mixed into a storm in her chest.

---

By mid-morning, she slipped into the garden under the guise of tending the flowers. Every instinct screamed caution, every shadow felt alive. Eren was already there, kneeling among the roses, his movements precise, careful, but tense. The moment Liana's eyes met his, she felt a quiet surge of relief and warmth.

"You came," he murmured, dark eyes scanning the garden. "I feared… today will be even more dangerous than yesterday."

"I had to," Liana whispered. "I cannot endure a single day without you, Eren. Every moment apart… it feels like a piece of me is missing."

Eren's hand brushed hers, a fleeting touch that sent warmth coursing through her body despite the cold tension. "Then we endure," he said quietly. "Careful, hidden… and together. No matter what happens, we endure."

A sudden rustle at the edge of the garden made Liana flinch. Darius had arrived earlier than expected. He stepped into the sunlight, polished boots crunching on gravel, eyes fixed on them with predatory precision.

---

"You are quite dedicated," Darius said smoothly, voice like silk with hidden poison. "To risk the morning like this… I admire courage, though it is foolish. Tell me, Miss Liana… are you truly alone, or is someone… assisting you?"

Liana's heart hammered. She squeezed Eren's hand, grounding herself in his presence. "I am… simply enjoying the garden," she said carefully, trying to keep her tone even.

"And you, sir?" Darius turned to Eren, voice dripping with subtle menace. "Tending the flowers… or tending something else?"

Eren's posture remained calm, though the tension in his body was taut. "I am performing my duties," he said evenly, hiding the protective fire that burned within him.

Darius' lips curved into a slow, dangerous smile. "Interesting… very interesting indeed. Some things cannot be hidden, no matter how carefully one moves. And yet… I find myself curious."

---

The next few moments were a tense standoff, each heartbeat stretching into eternity. Liana's mind raced. Every instinct screamed to flee, to hide, to disappear, yet she stayed rooted, bound by both fear and the thrill of forbidden intimacy.

Eren's hand brushed hers again, a small, grounding touch. "Do not falter," he whispered. "Breathe. Stay calm. Trust me."

Darius circled them slowly, as if savoring the tension. "I see it in your eyes," he murmured softly. "The attachment… the longing. It cannot be disguised, no matter how hard you try. And yet… you dare defy me."

Liana felt a flush rise in her cheeks. Part of her was terrified, part exhilarated by the closeness, the secret, the danger. She pressed against Eren, a subtle, unspoken bond that defied the eyes watching them.

---

Suddenly, a servant emerged from the hedges—another pawn of Darius' trap—alert and watching too closely. Liana's breath caught. She looked at Eren, panic threading her voice.

"They see us," she whispered.

Eren's dark eyes softened as he pressed a reassuring hand to hers. "Then we act," he murmured. "Follow my lead."

He guided her through a series of hidden paths, winding through roses and hedges, until they reached the fountain secluded at the far edge of the garden. Their hands brushed with a fleeting intimacy that sent warmth through both of them, even as adrenaline surged.

"You must remain hidden," Eren whispered. "Every heartbeat matters now."

---

The tension peaked when Darius stepped closer to the fountain, his predatory gaze sweeping the area. He paused, as though sensing their presence, and then a slow, calculated smile spread across his face. "I know you're here," he said softly. "You cannot hide forever. Secrets… they are fragile things."

Liana's chest tightened. She could feel the danger like a live wire in the air, but at the same time, the closeness to Eren, the shared heartbeat, made the fear almost intoxicating.

"You remain calm," Eren murmured, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "Breathe. Trust me. We will not be discovered."

Darius lingered for several long moments, circling the area, testing their patience and nerve. Finally, with a faint laugh that sounded like a blade sliding across silk, he retreated, leaving a charged silence in his wake.

Liana exhaled shakily, leaning against Eren. "I… I don't know how much longer I can endure this," she admitted.

Eren's arms tightened around her. "As long as we are together, we endure. Fear walks with love, but love… our love… is stronger than any fear."

Her chest swelled with a mixture of terror, longing, and determination. No matter the traps, no matter the schemes, no matter the pressures of family or society… she would not abandon him.

And as twilight descended over the estate, the roses bathed in fading light, Liana realized: their love, though forbidden, had rooted itself in the heart of danger. And it would endure, unshakable, unstoppable, undeniable.

A love the world would never bless… yet invincible.
