There was a loud ringing in Curtis's ears. His vision blurred, and his entire body suddenly felt as though he was floating.
Lazarus's words echoed in his ears. Lara. His wife. The woman carrying his babies. Poisoned.
"Mr. Curtis. I need you to meet me at the hospital. I am almost there," Lazarus said, trying to shake his boss from the headspace he had descended into.
Curtis ended the call without saying a word, and he turned to face the board of directors he was having a meeting with.
"Meeting dismissed. Get the fuck out, everybody," he snapped. And without waiting for either of them to say or do anything, Curtis ran out of the meeting room.
He literally ran.
People moved out of his way and ran all the way to his car, and he drove out of the garage recklessly.
Curtis' heart pounded in his chest. His wife, the mother of his children, the woman his heart was starting to beat for, had been poisoned.
How the hell was that possible?
