Chapter 3 - Evolution

Inside the spire's core, the air tasted of metal and decay. Bioluminescent veins glowed crimson-burgundy across vaulted ceilings thick with mucus-like secretions. Twelve Engineers stood encircling a neural-link terminal, limbs unnervingly still, black eyes reflecting the sickly glow of David's data core embedded within writhing organic circuitry. Evan's translation echoed coldly : "The Silent Maker's blueprint corrupts. We excise imperfection."

Sarah watched an Engineer-elder's ivory fingers dance across controls. Projected schematics flickered, Xenomorph morphologies spliced with monstrous horrors. David's voice leaked in fragmented whispers: "...accelerated gestation... cortical integration..."

Unable to understand, one of the twelve Engineers glanced at Evan bound next to Dr. Sarah Veylan. He held a blade to the synthetic's, neck demanding his interpretation. "Evan, what do they want?"Sarah couldn't comprehend their dialect. Only Evan could translate their alien tongue.

Evan's voice remained calm. "They require me to interpret David's data core to learn genetic sequences related to Xenomorph genetic architecture. Resistance would result in immediate termination."

"But why would they want to learn about that unless...?" Sarah trailed off, watching the elder Engineer manipulate tendrils fused to David's data core.

Evan's optical lenses contracted. "Clarification: They seek to replicate David's work and refine it. Eliminate the 'imperfection' of the Xenomorph." The air thickened as schematics shifted: a massive bio-weapon, armored in black chitin, its jaws capable of shearing starship hulls. David's whisper echoed: "...it seems like they are creating some kind of hybrid like we did..." One Engineer gestured sharply at Evan, clicks rapid-fire. Evan tilted his head. "They demand context on cortical shackling protocols. Delaying tactic initiated. I will slightly misinterpret the data."

Sarah felt the Heart-Spire tremble, not from the distant mountains, but from deep below. A subsonic growl vibrated through her boots: the stirring of the ultimate specimen in its reinforced vault.

The air crackled as the Engineer-elder activated a hologram projection of a Xenomorph's spinal structures interlaced with crystalline circuitry. Evan translated flatly: "They are creating a 'King Specimen'. A very larger one," said Evan, continuing. "Their creation is genetically flawed and not an eminent threat.

Sarah's breath caught as a tremor shook the chamber again, deeper than before, vibrating through her bones. On the projection, David's fragmented whisper hissed: "...subjugation through accelerated sterility..."

Evan subtly altered the translation: "The sequence denotes structural instability in the thoracic chamber." The elder Engineer paused, ivory fingers hovering over viscous controls. It's black eyes narrowed in suspicion as Evan spoke their language.

Sarah watched as the projected Xenomorph schematic flickered, a grotesque fusion of chitin and biomechanical plating. The Engineers remained oblivious, laser-focused on David's corrupted whispers detailing forced sterility protocols. Another gestured impatiently at Evan, demanding faster interpretation. "I overheard a few of them claiming they want vengeance for their ancestors that died back on Planet 4," Evan whispered, maintaining his deception, translating David's cold directive as "metabolic inefficiencies in nutrient absorption cycles"—a harmless flaw.

"I have a feeling they are going to send it to Earth," Sarah concluded through clenched teeth, the words drowned by the chamber's deep hum. "How long will it take them to perfect the King specimen?"

"Three weeks," Evan replied, his voice a calibrated whisper beneath the Engineers' clicking deliberations. "They are currently correcting flaws in the King's skeletal integration points." He subtly gestured toward the red holographic rendering of fused vertebrae, reinforced with alien alloys. "Hopefully, #00586 will grow stronger before the King awakens. Its connection to you is our only hope."

The morning sun pierced Hernas' canopy like shards of amber glass, igniting vapor trails left by the hybrid's passage. By day six, It had newly evolved wings. Translucent membranes stretched over reinforced cartilage veins, snapped taut as it launched from a towering tree. Below, the jungle churned with unseen threats; above, predatory avians circled with razor-edged cries. The hybrid banked sharply, hugging contours of moss-slicked rocks, its turquoise energy sac dimmed to near-invisibility. Each wingbeat was economical, and precise, conserving it energy. It scanned the jungle floor through multi-faceted eyes, mapping beetle-trails and seismic tremors from distant herds. Hunger gnawed but survival required patience. It landed silently atop a colossal fern, claws retracting to avoid vibrations. There, it waited. Breathing slowed. The world sharpened: rustling leaves, dripping sap, the electric hum of its own sac charging incrementally.

A tremor rippled through the fern's stem. Not the thud of the apex hunter, but something lighter. Faster. The hybrid's skull-plates shifted, focusing seismic receptors. Below, six creatures moved through the undergrowth: simian bodies covered in coarse, iridescent fur, their movements jerky and inquisitive. Each possessed a segmented tail tipped with a venom-dripping barb that glistened under Hernas' ultraviolet light. They chittered softly, probing rotting logs with dexterous claws. The hybrid remained statue-still, wings folded tight. One primate-scorpion paused, sniffing sulfur-tainted air. Its barbed tail quivered. Curiosity overruled caution; it began scaling the fern.

The hybrid dropped like a stone. Wind hissed through its wing membranes as it landed silently behind the group. The scout-creature screeched, whipping its barbed tail. The hybrid sidestepped with muscles coiled. The barb sliced empty air. Instantly, the other five swarmed, tails lashing. They cornered it against a towering fungal tree trunk, venom spraying. The hybrid calculated trajectories: escape vectors blocked, aggression escalating. Survival demanded escalation. A blinding torrent erupted from its throat. The beam struck the lead creature's flank. Flesh vaporized instantly; bone glowed white-hot before shattering. The acrid stench of cooked meat choked the air.

The jungle erupted in chaos. Screeches tore through the canopy. Two creatures fled blindly into razor-edged creepers, impaling themselves on thorns. The hybrid tasted their confusion, smelled iron-rich blood soaking moss. Survival demanded momentum. It launched skyward, wings snapping taut. Below, a fleeing creature scrabbled over slick roots. The hybrid dove, jaws extending mid-plummet. Its inner mouth punched through chitin and vertebrae. Phosphorus-rich marrow flooded its senses.

Two of the primates scrambled onto a rocky outcrop as a temporary sanctuary. Their venomous barbs gleamed, dripping ichor onto mossy stones. The hybrid landed silently on a lower branch, wings folding like origami knives. It observed: two tails twitching in panic, ready to spring sideways toward a lava tube. Escape vectors solidified in its mind. Launch angle: 37 degrees. Range: 4.8 meters. The energy sac flickered beneath its dorsal plating as it calculated the precise microburst needed to collapse the tunnel entrance ahead of them. Stone shattered in a silent flash; debris rained down, sealing their escape. The primates froze, cornered prey realizing the hunter had outmaneuvered them.

Sunlight speared through the canopy as the hybrid dropped among them, a shadow given teeth. Claws sheared through fur and chitin, spraying phosphorescent blood that sizzled on fern leaves. One primate lunged, barb aimed at its throat sac. The hybrid seized its tail and ripped it free with a wet crack. Venom splattered harmlessly against its hardening exoskeleton. Another tried to flee skyward, it's wings snapped taut, as the hybrid intercepted the creature mid-leap, inner jaws punching through its skull. Bone fragments littered the moss like broken ivory. The survivors scattered, but flight was futile; the hybrid moved through the trees like windblown ash, silent and lethal. It pinned the last one against a glowing tree, mandibles closing on its thorax. Rich marrow flooded its senses—neural lipids, phosphorus, the electric tang of fear.

Above, a shadow blotted out the sun. A creature with large wings circled with predatory patience. The hybrid froze, mandibles dripping. Apex hunter? No. This silhouette was different: broader wingspan, serrated wingtips, and a bio-luminescent underbelly pulsing crimson. Territorial screeches tore through the jungle as the newcomer dove. The hybrid recognized the threat as a competitive predator, drawn by spilled blood and weakness. Survival demanded retreat, not confrontation. It ejected the primate corpse skyward as a distraction. Crimson wings veered, snapping at the offered meal. In that heartbeat, the hybrid melted into a crevice beneath moss-coated boulders, energy dimming to cold embers. Breath condensed to frost. Above, tearing sounds echoed, talons rending flesh, followed by the victorious shriek of a hunter claiming easy prey.

Night fell heavy, thick with bioluminescent mist and the drone of unseen insects. The hybrid's form glowed softly within its rocky den. Its exoskeleton creaked, plates shifting. The ingested phosphorus and neural lipids catalyzed rapid adaptation. Bone plating thickened. Along its tail-tip, keratin hardened into a nascent barb, venom ducts pulsing faintly with synthesized toxins drawn from the primates' biology. Growth was painful, metabolic fires burning hot. By moonrise, it uncoiled, unfolding from the crevice. It stood taller, denser, the barb now a wickedly curved spike dripping corrosive venom. Hunger remained, a deeper echo now. It scanned the night, senses expanded. The winged predator's scent lingered nearby. Its own energy hummed, fully charged from the feast and bit of rest.

Above the canopy, a violet-winged creature circled, a silent silhouette against Hernas' moon. Its serrated wingtips sliced vapor trails as it banked, drawn back to the hybrid's scent. The hybrid melted into shadow beneath a waterfall of glowing moss. The predator landed heavily on the rocky outcrop, talons scraping stone. It shrieked, the sound vibrating the air. It wanted a challenge. Recognition sparked in the hybrid: the beast was smaller than the apex hunter but faster, armed with hooked claws and a beak capable of shearing chitin. The hybrid stepped into moonlight, barbed tail raised. Venom dripped, smoking where it struck damp moss. The winged hunter lunged, wings beating a hurricane of spores as it dove.

The hybrid easily evaded, the predator's talons gouging rock where its skull had been. Light flared—not a blast, but a blinding flash, searing the predator's sensitive eyes. It screeched, blinded, wings flailing. The hybrid struck, lashing its barbed tail with whip-cracking speed. The venom-tipped spike punched through membrane-thin wing tissue. Corrosive enzymes hissed, eating through sinew and bone. The predator reeled, plummeting into a thicket of razor ferns. Thorns ripped its unharmed wing. It thrashed, desperate, ichor spurting. The hybrid closed in, jaws unhinging.

Before the killing blow landed, a thunderous roar split the night. Trees shuddered as a colossal winged shape crashed through the canopy, twice the size of the first. Its violet underbelly pulsed with fury. A breeding mate. It dove, serrated beak wide enough to swallow the hybrid whole. The hybrid rolled, but the beast's talons clipped its side, sending it skidding across moss. Pain registered, a plate cracked. The new predator landed, shielding its wounded mate, and unleashed a piercing shriek that vibrated the hybrid's bones. Survival demanded annihilation. The hybrid's energy ignited, burning brighter than ever before. It channeled everything it had into its inner throat, compressing the beam into a searing lance.

The predator lunged. The hybrid unleashed hell. The beam struck the beast mid-charge, slicing diagonally from left shoulder to right hip. Flesh vaporized instantly; alien blood flashed to steam. The creature's shriek cut off abruptly as its upper half slid cleanly away from its lower torso, hitting the ground with twin thuds. Phosphorescent entrails spilled across glowing moss. Steam rose from cooked organs. The hybrid staggered, its sac dim and empty, utterly drained. It tasted hot blood and scorched bone. Hunger roared back, primal and urgent.

Before it could feast, the wounded mate screeched a sound like tearing metal. It dragged itself away on shattered wings, spraying ichor. The hybrid gave chase, barbed tail poised to finish the kill. But exhaustion weighed heavy; its limbs trembled. It stumbled over a root, claws skidding on wet rock. The creature vanished into a cave mouth veiled by dripping vines. A low growl echoed from within, a territorial warning. The hybrid froze at the threshold. Darkness breathed back.

Returning to the spot of its kill, the hybrid found only scorch marks and the sickly-sweet tang of vaporized meat. The fallen predator's carcass was gone. Vanished. Not even a scrap of carapace remained. Only deep claw gouges scoring the basalt confirmed the theft. The apex predator, a silent stalker of lava tubes and shadowed valleys, had claimed the hybrid's hard-won prize. Its musk clung to the moss, a challenge written in pheromones.

Fury scorched through the hybrid's veins hotter than its energy beam. It threw back its head and unleashed a screech that split the humid air, a sound of jagged metal tearing through the jungle's stillness. Bioluminescent fungi dimmed in response. The frustration was a physical ache, worse than hunger. This wasn't scavenging; it was humiliation. The apex had watched, waited for weakness, and taken what it earned. The hybrid's barbed tail lashed, venom spraying droplets that hissed against stones. Its energy flickered weakly, drained but simmering with violent intent. It knew confrontation was inevitable but not now. It had to keep growing. Keep getting stronger. Keep evolving.
