Chapter 23 - A Short Intermission

The night went by fast, and early in the morning came. The crack of dawn.

Rar, Sodror, and Saldair stood on the shore. Julian was still in his wheelchair, so he wasn't standing.

They were all well-equipped, with bags and necessary supplies.

"You boys ready?" Rar asked.

Saldair brandished his axe with excitement.

"I don't know why you're doing that, Saldair. It's not like we're gonna be in any active danger. We're taking the safe route," Sodror sighed.

"Let a man dream for the thrill, alright? Though don't get me wrong, I do prefer my safety."

Rar placed one foot on the dock before he heard a noise.

"Rar!" Lyrei yelled out.

"..."

Rar slowly turned around. On the grassy side of the land, stood Lyrei and Silva.

"Wh-what are you doing here, Lyrei?"

"I knew you would be here! Because I'm such a good friend, that is. So you're gonna take me and Silva with you, and that's that. You're going to see the saint, right?"

Is she smart, too?

"Well... yeah,"

"Then there. Julian, you'll let us come, right? Right?"

"It's no problem."

. . .

Lyrei and Silva got together in a secluded part, surrounded by trees. Still near the shore, of course.

"Rar has become much calmer, don't you think? This is the first time I've seen him do something positive."

The two girls were filling their bags with necessities. Lyrei looked up before speaking.

"Yeah. I noticed it too. It was cool. He's always pretty cool, but that right there was pretty cool."

"..."

"What? Silva, why are you making that face?"

"Nothing... It's nothing."

"It's not like that!"

"Right. Right."

"Really, it isn't! He's a great guy. Strong, caring. A good friend. Even-"

"See?"

"... Okay. Maybe I fancy him a little. But I would never act on it. We're friends."

"Wow. You're shameless, Lyrei. You just admitted it just like that?"

"You can't blame me..."

"What about Julian?"

"Julian? He's... weird."

"Really? Is it the red eyes?"

"No, no. Well, in a way. The way he looks like me... eugh, it's sickening. And he thinks I can't tell. It's weird!"

"Whoa..."

"It's disgusting. Honestly, I hate being around him. Ugh! Could we refrain from talking about him if it's not necessary? Seriously."

"Okay. My apologies. I thought he was nice."

The two girls got back to packing. Julian had been rolled by Rar, as there was a question he wanted to ask Lyrei. Of course, Rar understood that it was not the time, and quickly rolled him back toward the shore.

"..."

Two-faced snake.

Julian turned his head to the side.
