HAZEL'S POV
I had been expecting relief.
That was the truly embarrassing part. Somewhere during the long, tense trek between leaving Blackmoor and arriving at the underground settlement's outer tunnel, I had actually managed to convince myself that coming back to my own people would feel like setting a heavy burden down. I'd hallucinated this beautiful, quiet moment where the twelve long years of carrying absolutely everything alone would finally find a place to rest.
What I got instead was a suffocating room full of people staring at me like I owed them money.
