Chapter 2 - 01: The first days (2/3)

"You? Needing my help? Since when?" He crossed his arms, studying Sanemi suspiciously. Sanemi shrugged nonchalantly, though his eyes sparkled with mischief. "Since I realized you're actually good at this stuff. Plus, it's a win-win - I get help and you feel less guilty." He leaned in closer, lowering his voice. "Unless you're too busy being tired and lazy again." Giyuu rolled his eyes, trying to hide his growing curiosity about Sanemi's request.

"Fine. I'll help you. But only because I don't want to hear you complain about failing anymore." He resumed walking, a small smirk forming on his face. "And don't think I'll go easy on you just because we're roommates." In the classroom Sanemi immediately walked to his best friend, Obanai. Sanemi plopped down next to Obanai, who was already seated and waiting for him.

"Morning, Iguro. You won't believe what happened this morning."

He leaned back in his chair, shooting a quick glance at Giyuu who was settling into his own seat. Obanai raised an eyebrow, his snake Kaburamaru peeking out from his shoulder. "What happened? Did Tomioka finally lose it?"

He whispered, clearly amused by the thought of Giyuu's distress. Sanemi snickered, keeping his voice low as well.

"Nah, he slept through his alarm. I had to drag him out of bed. He was all disheveled and panicking about being late."

He mimicked Giyuu's frantic movements from earlier, making exaggerated gestures. The teacher entered the classroom, silencing the chatter instantly. Sanemi straightened up in his seat, but not before giving Obanai a knowing smirk. "Later," he mouthed, turning his attention to the front where the test papers were being distributed. The test papers landed on Sanemi's desk, and he immediately glanced at Giyuu, who looked surprisingly composed now.

He whispered to himself, "Let's see if he can actually focus for once." Giyuu started writing, his hand moving swiftly across the paper. Sanemi watched him for a moment before turning to his own test, occasionally stealing glances at Giyuu's answers.

He found himself impressed despite himself, seeing how concentrated Giyuu was on the exam. Time passed, and Sanemi began to feel the pressure of the test. He tried to focus, but his eyes kept drifting back to Giyuu's paper, comparing their work. He muttered under his breath, "This is harder than I thought..." Meanwhile Giyuu finished with extrem speed. Sanemi's eyes widened in disbelief as he saw Giyuu set down his pen and push his paper away.

"Already? That was fast..."

He whispered, genuinely surprised at how quickly Giyuu had completed the test. He felt a twinge of jealousy at Giyuu's apparent confidence. Giyuu leaned back in his chair, looking satisfied with himself. He noticed Sanemi's stare and gave him a small, almost smug smile. Sanemi scowled and quickly looked back at his own paper, trying to concentrate again while feeling a mix of admiration and irritation.

The bell rang, signaling the end of the test. Sanemi sighed heavily and stood up, stretching his stiff muscles. "That was brutal. How did you finish so fast, Tomioka?"

He approached Giyuu's desk, curiosity getting the better of him. Giyuu gathered his things, looking up at Sanemi with that same neutral expression.

"I studied. Unlike some people." He said it casually, but there was a hint of playful mockery in his tone. Sanemi rolled his eyes again, crossing his arms defensively.

"Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up. Just wait until I beat you in our study session later."

He jabbed a finger at Giyuu's chest, a competitive spark in his eyes. "Don't touch me." Sanemi pulled his finger back, a flash of annoyance crossing his face at Giyuu's cold response.

"Sorry, idiot. Didn't mean to invade your personal space." He said sarcastically, taking a step back but maintaining his challenging stance. Giyuu's eyes narrowed slightly at the nickname, but he remained calm. "Just meet me at our room after school. And don't be late this time."

He walked past Sanemi, heading towards the door with his usual graceful stride. Sanemi watched Giyuu leave, a mix of frustration and anticipation building inside him.

"Tch, bossy as always." He muttered to himself, then turned to Obanai who was watching the interaction with an amused expression. "Let's go get some lunch. I need to mentally prepare for this study session."Obanai walked to Sanemi, clearly disgusted how his friend is reacting by Giyuu. He is not homophobic but h is definitely homophobic for his best friend.

Obanai leaned against the wall, his snake hissing softly as he spoke in a low voice.

"You're really going to let that water freak order you around? What's gotten into you, Shinazugawa?"

His tone was filled with concern and disapproval. Sanemi sighed and ran a hand through his hair, feeling a bit embarrassed by Obanai's observation.

"It's not like that. I just... need his help, okay? Don't read too much into it."

He started walking towards the cafeteria, trying to sound nonchalant but failing miserably. Obanai followed closely behind, Kaburamaru still hissing as if sensing Sanemi's internal conflict.

"Right. And I'm the emperor of Japan."

He said dryly, clearly not buying Sanemi's excuse.Sanemi stopped abruptly and turned to face Obanai, his face slightly flushed.

"I'm serious! Stop looking at me like that. It's just studying." He was getting defensive now, his voice rising slightly. Obanai smirked, crossing his arms as he stared at Sanemi with knowing eyes. "Sure, sure. Just studying. With Tomioka. The guy you can't stand."

He emphasized the last part, enjoying teasing his friend. Sanemi groaned in frustration, feeling cornered by Obanai's accusations.

"Ugh, you're impossible! I don't like him like that, alright? He's just... useful for once."

He tried to defend himself, but even he could hear how weak his argument sounded. Obanai chuckled, clearly enjoying Sanemi's flustered state.

"Useful, huh? That's what they all say. Keep telling yourself that, Shinazugawa."

He patted Sanemi's shoulder mockingly before walking ahead into the cafeteria. Sanemi stood there for a moment, face burning with embarrassment and anger. He clenched his fists and muttered under his breath.

"I hate you, Iguro. I really do."

He stormed after Obanai, trying to shake off the uncomfortable thoughts about Giyuu that kept creeping into his mind. "Oh look there is your girlfriend, pinky bitch."

Obanai's eyes widened slightly at the sight of Mitsuri waving at them from across the cafeteria. His expression immediately softened, a rare smile appearing on his face.

"Shut up, Shinazugawa. She's not my girlfriend."

He said defensively, but there was a hint of affection in his voice as he waved back at Mitsuri. Mitsuri approached their table, her pink hair bouncing with each step. She sat down next to Obanai, completely ignoring Sanemi's presence.

"Hey guys! How was your test?"
