Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12 — The Child They Made

 POV: Carlisle

Jasper crossed the threshold first, carrying the boy as if he were made of glass.

Lucian.

The hybrid.

The one Alice had seen.

The one who had collapsed into Jasper's arms in the snow.

Esme gasped softly the moment she saw him.

"Oh… sweetheart…"Her voice broke.

Lucian looked impossibly small in Jasper's arms — no more than eight or nine, ten at most.Thin.Bruised.Skin too warm for a vampire and too cold for a human.Black hair matted to his forehead.

His hands were balled into tiny fists, as though even unconscious he expected pain.

I motioned toward the medical room we had set up in the house.

"Bring him here."

Jasper laid him gently on the cot, stepping back as Esme hovered over the child, smoothing his hair off his face with trembling fingers.

"He's just a boy," she whispered."And they let him wander alone in the snow…"

"They didn't let him," Alice murmured."He escaped."

I took Lucian's wrist carefully.

His pulse was fast — but weak. His skin feverish. His breathing shallow.

"Hybrid physiology," I murmured."His heart works harder than a vampire's, faster than a human's. But he's extremely dehydrated."

Bella stood near the door, arms folded tightly across her chest, eyes stinging with fury.

"I can't believe they did this. To a child."

Alice nodded, jaw tight.

"He was scared of Jasper. Scared of all of us at first. Conditioning like that doesn't happen overnight."

"But it does happen in Volterra," Jasper said darkly.

Examination

I cleaned the boy's face first — dust, blood, dirt and melted snow.He twitched once, but didn't wake.

After ensuring his breathing was stable, I checked for injuries.

Bruises that would heal fast.Small cuts.Wrists slightly raw — restraint marks.

But no broken bones.

His body healed quickly — like Renesmee's — but something about him felt…

Different.

Older and younger at the same time.

His breathing hitched suddenly, and Esme froze with her hand resting on his forehead.

"Carlisle…" she whispered."He's waking."

POV: Lucian

The smell was the first thing I noticed.

Warm.

Safe.

Home.

Home?

I opened my eyes slowly.

The world was blurry at first, shapes and shadows, warm lights and soft voices.

Then it focused.

Two golden eyes.

A woman's face — gentle, soft, worried.

"You're safe," she said.

I blinked again.

"Wh-where…"

"You're in our home," Carlisle said softly from my right."You collapsed in the snow."

I tried to sit up.

Jasper gently pressed a hand to my shoulder.

"Easy, kiddo. You're exhausted."

My heart pounded too fast.Too loud.Too scared.

"I didn't mean to come wrong. I d-didn't mean to cause trouble—"

Bella stepped forward instantly.

"You didn't," she said, voice fierce."You didn't do anything wrong."

Her kindness was so strange it made my chest hurt.

I swallowed hard.

"I'm not supposed to talk to strangers."

Jasper exchanged a look with Carlisle.

"Did they tell you that?" Jasper asked gently.

I hesitated.

A flicker of pain twisted in my stomach.

"They told me a lot of things."

POV: Alice

He was trembling.

Not from cold.

From memory.

I moved a little closer and knelt by the cot.

"Lucian," I whispered, "we're not your enemies."

His eyes softened.Just a little.

"I know."

"Because of the vision?" I asked.

He nodded, small and timid.

"I saw you," he whispered."My future goes… to you."

My throat tightened.

Bella sat on the foot of the bed.

"Lucian… can you tell us what happened to you?"

He tensed instantly.

"No— no, I'm not supposed to— Aro said— if I talk too much— if I say the wrong thing— he'll— he'll—"

Esme touched his hair, soothing.

"You're far from Aro now," she whispered."He can't hurt you here."

Tears welled in his eyes.

Real tears.

"I'm not the only one," he whispered.

The room went still.

Carlisle leaned in slowly.

"The only one what, Lucian?"

His voice broke.

"There were others."

Bella inhaled sharply.

Lucian wiped his face with the back of his small hand.

"They tried to make more like me. More hybrids. But…"His lips trembled."They weren't strong. Or special. Or… useful."

Alice felt tears she couldn't shed burn in her throat.

"What happened to them?" Carlisle asked softly.

Lucian looked down.

"They disappeared."

Bella covered her mouth.

"Oh my God…"

Jasper whispered:

"He killed them."

Lucian swallowed.

"Aro says only strong things deserve life."

Esme choked on a sound halfway between a sob and a gasp.

"And you?" Alice asked gently."Why did he keep you?"

Lucian hesitated — then lifted a hand.

A tiny spark of light flickered above his palm.

Not fire.Not electricity.

Something… alive.

Something that shimmered like the space between visions.

Alice felt it hit her skin like a warm breeze.

Her breath caught.

"That's why," she whispered.

Lucian nodded.

"I have a gift. So I was allowed to stay."

Bella's voice cracked when she spoke:

"For how long?"

Lucian looked up with wide, dark eyes.

"Since I was born."

"How long ago?" Carlisle asked.

Lucian blinked.

"A long time," he whispered."I don't know numbers good."

Alice looked at Carlisle.

"A hundred years," she breathed."He's been alive the whole time."

Lucian nodded weakly.

"Aro wanted another Renesmee," Jasper said softly."Ever since he saw her."

Carlisle exhaled slowly, grief and fury mixing in his gold eyes.

"A century of failed experiments."

Lucian curled in on himself slightly.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.Voice tiny.Broken."I didn't want to be there."

Esme wiped his cheek gently.

"You're not there anymore," she whispered."You're with us now."

Lucian's eyes filled again — but not with fear this time.

With relief.

Real relief.

"I can stay?" he whispered.

Alice took his small hand carefully in both of hers.

"Yes," she whispered."You can stay as long as you want."

His lips parted.

His body sagged, exhausted.

But for the first time since they'd found him…

He smiled.

A small, tired, hopeful smile.
