Chapter 3 - A Fitting End

Fight ensues as crimson blood spills along with burnt flesh and bones, piling up and towering, seemingly trying to reach the heavens like a throne of a demon attempting to usurp control, like an endless torrent of pain and torture that will leave just almost anyone in shock at being the witness of.

Down below on the grounds, those of lower strength and ability than the ones fighting high above can only attempt to calm their own nerves as they hear thunderous roaring with each and every clash, bright flashing lightning rendering them temporarily blind with each exchange that happens in front of them, each tremor, each rumbling from each attack and each defense shattering the ground apart, making them think that this might very well be the end of existence itself as they know it.

Who wouldn't think of otherwise? After all, the ones clashing within the heavens above are people who had reached the very peak of strength, ones who had comprehended the nature of everything and made their own interpretation of it all by themselves, bringing their existence, their very essence, to a realm infinitesimally closer to that of beyond even a god.

And yet here, in each passing moment, one of them fall down, the heavens crying in remorse as it witnesses its finest creations falling one by one, their blood spill turning the towering mountain into a river, then a sea below, their mangled carcasses falling lifelessly limp down the ground, their might turning into nothing but dust as even in all of their assumed invincibility, the scythe of death still caught up to them.

Meanwhile, this scythe of death personified, Argus, whose own body is also starting to fall apart now, continues to tear through the suppression in what he can only consider as futile, yet nevertheless an entertaining resistance, an amused, maniacal smile on his once charming face now covered with grime and blood as he watches his opponent fall like ants in front of him.

'Unfortunately for me, I have yet to truly possess this strength…'

He thought in pity as he came to realize just what sort of might he can possibly possess once he crosses this one final barrier in front of him, a barrier he is well aware he won't be able to cross even if he were to somehow survive today.

'Shattered origin, ruptured meridians, torn muscles, how is he even moving in that kind of state?'

Among the opposing party somewhere, a person with bright, purple eyes that glows as he peers through the singular most powerful supreme of this era, thought to himself in amazement, the only answer to the question in his mind that he can think of being the fact that this man somehow continues to hold on through sheer will alone.

"Don't falter!! He's on the end of his rope, everything about him spells he's about to die!! Remember the purpose of coming here!!"

"Fellow Daoist is right, once we get that, all sacrifice is worth it in the end!!"

Feeling hesitant as the sword-wielding young man continues to effortlessly tore through each of their offensives, one of the older people shouted as they continue pushing through, albeit still holding off on full offensive as they fear that they might stuck their head far too much to the point that their opponent can easily sever them from their bodies.

"You're finally showing your true colors, huh?"

Hearing the words from these people's mouth, Argus replies in an amused tone as he lifts the sword in his hand once more, his muscles, despite screaming in agonizing pain, continues to move and carry out his mind's command, each motion a blur as he barely endures and maintain his sanity through each wave of pain coming from each of his movements, all bombarding his brain without end.

"Xing Yuandao, no Argus!! Don't make it any more difficult for you and for us!! You can still surrender, e-even if it's just for me!"

With those words reaching his ears, the maniacal smile on the sword-wielding young man's face changes into one filled with amused mockery, the words repeating on his mind so much that he couldn't help but break into a loud, mocking laugh as he shifts his gaze to the woman who just said such words, his sword now pointing towards the woman as he opens his mouth in reply.

"Surrender? For you? Are you worthy?"

Despite the heavenly appearance of the lady who just spoke, not a single aspect of her being, her soothing voice, the calming air around her, her regal demeanor, nothing of them moved Argus, contrary to what most of his other enemies expected.

And in fact, the sword-wielding young man did so much more beyond expectation as the sword in his hand glowed a bright white before he swung it horizontally, a crescent moon forming before it faded into nothing, making the less perceptive ones wonder what sort of effect such a simple swing of a sword aims to bring.

"Thousands of years of companionship as we walk to the peak of the dao, living life with you in mind, and betrayal is the greatest gift that you have given me, and now you want me to surrender? Don't think too highly of yourself, woman…"

Argus mutters to himself as he watches the lady's body being severed cleanly into a lower and upper half, an expression of shock and terror on her face as it dawns on her that to the young man she is looking at, gone were the emotions of the past that he once felt for her, a fact that she never brought into consideration knowing how much he treasures her, a fact that brought about her true demise.

"I don't want to di—"

With tears flooding her panic-stricken eyes, she attempted to utter her last words before her body collapsed into nothingness, her entire being disappearing like she was never there before, an end that might be far brutal or far merciful than Argus' other enemies, depending on one's own view.

Watching the demise of this lady, one of the more powerful ones among them, the attacking group once again was reminded of the power the sword-wielding young man possesses, in their mind the seeds of thoughts that his unparalleled might amongst his peer, the very reason they wanted to take what is his, might be far too much than what they can actually handle.

Having already brought themselves to the deep ends of the waters, though, they knew far too well that retreat is no longer an option now; hence, amidst the hesitation, they can only grit their teeth in hopes that one way or another, the young man reaches his limit using such terrifying power for them to have the chance to take him down.

And yet this hope seems too far-fetched, as even if some, if not most of the remaining attackers know that his body is already crumbling apart, Argus still shows unparalleled momentum that seems impossible to stop, a testament to such assumption, the next words that came out of his mouth.

"It's time to truly end this."

Those were the last words that everyone heard as the world, no, everything, was bathed in pure white in its entirety, the first and final showcase of a might that far transcends the divine.
