Chapter 61 - What Survived
They found shelter before dawn inside the remains of an old lime-storage tunnel cut into the side of the quarry road.
Most of the entrance had collapsed, leaving only a narrow gap, but the rear chamber was dry enough to rest in and hidden from anyone travelling the main road. Ennu checked the tunnel first, then waved the others inside.
Adan lowered Gabriel against the wall carefully, breathing through his nose as he tried to ignore the blood dried along the side of his face. Tess helped him guide Gabriel down, then immediately moved toward Gilbert, who had been dragged the last several miles on the makeshift stretcher.
"Sit still," Ennu said as Gilbert tried to shift himself.
"I am sitting still."
"You're trying to move the leg."
"I'd like to know if I still have one."
