Hot ice…
Why was I still surprised? Nothing about him made sense.
Steam shot from every crack in the ice, turning my skin a raw red. It only got worse with each strike as the vapor slowly filled the room. 'It' must've noticed as the door shook with a loud knock.
No, they weren't knocking. They were trying to kick the door down.
[Come on, break! I don't have much time!] My strikes grew stronger, drawing more and more steam as cracks snaked around the chrysalis.
KNOCK!
I was too sweaty, too stressed, and in too much pain to hear the second knock. My focus was on this stupid boy. The scapel came down on the ice with such force that I felt my hands grow numb but I couldn't let up, I just needed to hit it one more time.
Craaaaaackk!!!
The scapel stopped right before piercing his heart. My breath came out in short pants and the sweat on my face fell on his, sizzling almost immediately before adding to the steam already in the room. I felt like passing out, but I couldn't.
Not yet.
His body was hot to the point I almost let out a yelp upon throwing him over my shoulder, the surrounding skin turning a deep red. The pain that accompanied it was almost unbearable.
KNOCK!
This time, the entire room shook. It would only take one more kick to send the door off its hinges. Luckily, I didn't have to punch through the window. A simple click threw it open.
There was no one waiting for us at the bottom, that basically confirmed it.
'It' could only control one student at a time.
I threw Haylen down before jumping after him. Adrenaline numbed the pain; it was a problem for future Kira. It couldn't fully numb the pain, I could still feel the burn in my hands.
I winced, forcing my eyes closed and biting my lips until I drew blood.
[Keep. Pushing.] My brain lapsed in and out of my consciousness, I could see my limit on the horizon. Everything felt like too much.
Too loud, too quiet, too bright, too dark, but especially too peaceful.
BOOM!
That was better. The room above us shook as the door came flying off its hinges.
Forcing myself up, I threw Haylen on my back and began moving. It wasn't a sprint but a desperate jog. Vision blurring and overwhelmed, I wasn't sure where to go. The natural impulse was the dorms, but that would be dumb. I'd actually be disappointed if 'it' wasn't waiting for me there.
There was one other place I could go.
The day after Haylen had broken into my room, there was a place he went to first: Junjujunjun Library. Why?
What was so special about that old library?
My body seemed to have already figured it out as I wobbled towards the Students' Plaza. It was a half-conscious stupor, shadows stretched unnaturally long and every light in the city seemed to be that sickening shade of amber. Behind me, I could hear an all too familiar pair of footsteps.
I instinctively dodged the light while quickening my step, it was like my body had grown to despise that color. Before I knew it I was in front of the library's door. This time, I didn't need to actively command my body to lurch towards the door. A few solid slams and the door flew open. The steps behind me stopped, but I was too tired to notice, collapsing on the floor with heavy breaths.
