Chapter 24 - Chapter 21 Part 2

Avery's POV

‎The box rested there, silent, yet charged with an almost tangible presence.

‎As if it were waiting to be opened again.

‎I reached out, my trembling fingers brushing against the ancient wood, worn by time, marked by years of silence and secrets. The broken lock still dangled uselessly, a mute witness to something that should never have been opened.

‎Behind me, Daniel was combing through the place, determined to satisfy his curiosity.

‎I slowly lifted the lid.

‎A sharp crack echoed through the room, making me jump in fright.

‎"Shit!"

‎Daniel had just knocked over a stack of books, which collapsed with a muffled crash against the dusty floor.

‎"Seriously?" I whispered, turning toward him, both annoyed and nervous. "Could you be careful?"

‎"Sorry, but this place seriously gives me the creeps, okay?"

‎I sighed and crouched down to help him gather the scattered books. Old, yellowed titles—some marked with symbols I didn't recognize.

‎Then—

‎a sound.

‎Dull.

‎Distant.

‎Like a breath being held beneath the earth.

‎I looked up.

‎"Did you hear that?"

‎"Probably the house… or the wind."

‎We went back to what we were doing, deliberately ignoring the strange vibration—until it came back. Stronger. More insistent. A resonance that seemed to rise from the walls themselves.

‎The floor trembled slightly beneath our feet.

‎Daniel froze.

‎"Avery… look."

‎"At what?"

‎I followed his gaze.

‎The table.

‎No—

‎not the table.

‎Something on it.

‎The key.

‎The one I had placed beside the box began to shake, as if seized by convulsions. A metallic vibration—unnatural, almost alive. Then the box itself started to tremble, glowing with a pale, whitish, icy light.

‎"What the hell is this?!" Daniel blurted out, his voice breaking.

‎My heart was pounding so hard I thought it might burst through my ribs.

‎Instinctively, I stepped in front of him.

‎"Stay behind me."

‎The light intensified.

‎The vibrations grew violent.

‎And with one final jolt, the key and the box crashed heavily onto the floor.

‎A brutal silence fell over the room.

‎Our breathing was uneven, ragged.

‎I moved closer, slowly, trying to understand. My footsteps echoed strangely in the darkness.

‎On the floor now lay a second key.

‎Identical… yet different.

‎Even older.

‎Its surface was engraved with a circle surrounded by unknown symbols—an unfamiliar script, almost organic. It rested in a piece of ancient fabric, strangely white despite the years that must have passed, as if it had been wrapped with care—or fear.

‎"What is that?" Daniel whispered.

‎I didn't answer.

‎I slowly picked up both keys, placing them side by side in my palm. The cold they radiated contrasted sharply with the stifling heat of the room.

‎A violent shiver ran through me.

‎The whispers returned.

‎Clearer this time.

‎Closer.

‎The keys vibrated together.

‎A dull light pulsed between them.

‎My breath caught.

‎I was no longer fully there.

‎No longer completely anchored in reality.
