One week after the sealing.
Toneri had been running diagnostics.
Not because the array needed it.
It was stable.
He ran them because maintenance was what he did and stability was worth verifying.
He'd also been doing something new.
He'd been reading.
Not the Temple records.
Not the Ōtsutsuki historical documents.
The chat.
He had access to the group chat through the communicator.
He'd had it since the letter exchange.
He'd been using it mostly to send and receive specific operational messages.
But now he was reading the ambient conversation.
It was---
A lot.
He'd been reading for a week and he still wasn't entirely sure how to categorize it.
Hashirama was loud.
Madara was complicated in ways that seemed to require knowing his history.
Shukaku was consistently concerned with being acknowledged.
The Nine-Tails was consistently concerned with not being seen to care about anything.
Naruto was---
He paused on Naruto.
He'd been watching Naruto in the chat for a week.
Naruto was fast.
He arrived at correct conclusions before anyone expected him to.
He made analogies that shouldn't work and did.
He typed in lowercase when he was settled and all-caps when he was excited which was most of the time.
He argued with Sasuke constantly.
And trained with him every morning.
And sent him exactly one meaningful message per day which was never explicitly meaningful.
He was, Toneri concluded, a specific kind of person.
The kind that was easier to understand through watching what they did than through what they said.
He'd been watching.
He'd also been thinking about something specific.
He pulled up the communicator.
He typed carefully.

He sent it.
He waited.

Naruto read the message during a water break.
He'd been on wind nature attempt seventy-one.
The edge hold was at fifteen seconds now.
Entry clean.
Exit defined.
Precision arriving at the edges the way Tobirama had described.
He read Toneri's message.
He responded immediately.

He went back to training.
Then the chat started.

The two should theoretically interfere with each other --- different energy signatures, different operating frequencies. Instead they operated in parallel without disruption. [Moon Temple (Toneri): I'm aware. The question is how. Natural energy and Nine-Tails chakra operate at different frequencies. They should have created destructive interference at the array level. They didn't.]
Naruto thought about this.
He thought about what it had felt like in the center point.

[Naruto Uzumaki: what i was holding. the gate. the ramen shop. the stuff i told you about.]

[Moon Temple (Toneri): You're saying the coherence of the two energy signatures was maintained by a shared intention vector.]
[Naruto Uzumaki: ...i don't know what that means but probably yes]
Tobirama had been reading the exchange for three minutes.
He entered the chat.
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Toneri.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...Second Hokage Tobirama Senju.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: The shared intention vector hypothesis. Have you run the array data against the fracture energy records?]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): Yes. The interference pattern should have appeared at the 0.3-second mark. It didn't.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Which means the energy signatures were not operating at different frequencies. They were operating at the same frequency despite different origin states.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): Correct. Which should be impossible.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Unless the Harmony Seal already modified the Nine-Tails' chakra frequency to align with the anchor's natural energy baseline.]
A longer pause.
[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...I didn't consider that.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: The Harmony Seal has been operating for three weeks. Its function was described as allowing the anchor and the Nine-Tails to sense each other's emotional state. But if the seal was also gradually aligning their chakra frequencies as a byproduct---]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): Then by the time the array activated, they were already operating at compatible frequencies.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: Yes.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...The Harmony Seal was doing more than its described function.]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: The scroll's rewards often do more than their described functions.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): Is that documented?]
[Second Hokage Tobirama Senju: It's becoming documented. I've been compiling observations since the ranking concluded.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): I'd like to see that research.]

Sasuke had been reading for five minutes.
He joined.
[Uchiha Sasuke @Moon Temple (Toneri): The Sharingan perception data from the activation. I observed the intention field tripling when the Nine-Tails opened the gate. If the Harmony Seal had already aligned their frequencies, that would explain why the combination multiplied rather than added.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...You were observing from Konoha during the activation.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: Yes. The Six Paths seed's perception layer.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): You can read intention fields from that distance?]
[Uchiha Sasuke: At current development, approximately six hundred meters clearly. More at reduced resolution.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...Konoha to Moon Temple is considerably more than six hundred meters.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: The signal was strong.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): The intention field tripling would have amplified the signal significantly.]
[Uchiha Sasuke: Yes. That's why I could read it.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): Do you have the observation data recorded?]
[Uchiha Sasuke: In the training log. I'll share the relevant entries.]
Jiraiya had been reading for ten minutes.
He joined.
[Jiraiya: I want to add something from the Sage Mode side.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): Jiraiya. The Sannin.]

[Naruto Uzumaki: my dad used to count people on street corners to be still and i count birds and that's basically it]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...I don't understand what that has to do with Sage Mode.]
[Naruto Uzumaki: okay so. you know how the best ramen is the kind where you're not trying to make it perfect you're just--- present with the broth and the noodles and you let it be what it is and then it turns out perfect?]
A pause.
[Moon Temple (Toneri): I don't know what ramen is.]
[Naruto Uzumaki: RIGHT i keep forgetting. okay so ramen is--- it's like. hot soup with noodles. very specific. the best versions have broth that took hours to make and the secret is you don't rush it.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): I see.]
[Naruto Uzumaki: so imagine the natural energy is the broth. if you rush it and try to make it happen it gets bitter. if you just--- be in the same space as it without demanding anything. it comes.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): ...]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): That's actually a very effective analogy.]

Naruto set down the chat and looked at Sasuke.
Sasuke was looking at his own screen.
"He's actually engaging," Naruto said.
"Yes."
"With Tobirama and you."
"We're asking relevant questions."
"He's been alone up there for twenty years," Naruto said. "And now he has--- all of this."
Sasuke looked at the chat.
At Tobirama and Toneri discussing Harmony Seal frequency alignment.
At Jiraiya comparing Sage Mode to broth.
At the conversation that had started with one careful message and was now five people.
"He asked if the chat was an appropriate channel," Sasuke said.
"Yeah."
"He didn't assume. He asked."
"Yeah."
"That's considerate."
"Very," Naruto said.
He looked at the Moon through the training ground opening.
"He's going to be a good research collaborator," Naruto said.
Sasuke looked at the Moon too.
"Yes," he said. "He is."
Naruto went back to the wind nature training.
Sasuke sent the training log entries to Toneri.

The Nine-Tails was quiet for a moment.
[Nine-Tails Kurama: ...Like something that had been discordant becoming less so.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): Progressively?]
[Nine-Tails Kurama: Yes. Over two weeks. Until by the day of the activation, there was no discordance.]
[Moon Temple (Toneri): That matches the array data exactly.]
[Nine-Tails Kurama: ...I'll provide whatever observational data is useful.]

He thought about the scroll saying the next chapter is yours.
He thought about what the next chapter looked like when it got going.
He was smiling again.
Ayame appeared in the doorway.
She looked at his face.
She went to the cabinet.
Came back with a chestnut.
She handed it to him.
He took it.
"Toneri?" she said.
"Toneri," he confirmed.
She nodded.
Went back to her work.
He ate the chestnut.
He picked up the ladle.
He kept stirring.
