Chapter 61 - After the Snow Falls Quiet

VOLUME 4 — WHEN FIRE LEARNS TO STAY

-

-AURORA ACADEMY ROOFTOP, SAPPORO, HOKKAIDO, JAPAN-

-4:24 PM, DECEMBER 21, 2016-

The snow continued to fall.

Soft. Steady. Almost silent.

Rikuu's hand had already lowered, but the warmth of that brief touch lingered between them like something fragile that neither dared name.

Ichika stood still, breath shallow, the cold air sharp in her lungs.

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them spoke.

The wind pushed gently at their coats, reminding them the world hadn't stopped — even if it felt like it had.

Rikuu finally stepped back half a pace.

Not far.

Just enough to think again.

"…You should go," he said quietly.

His voice had softened, stripped of its usual edge.

Ichika nodded, though she didn't turn away immediately.

"I'll see you tomorrow," she said.

Rikuu hesitated.

"…Yeah."

She smiled faintly and walked toward the rooftop door.

Only when it closed behind her did Rikuu exhale — a slow, unsteady breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

He stared at the place where she'd been standing.

You're going to change everything.

He had meant it.

And that terrified him more than any fight ever had.

-SCHOOL HALLWAY, AURORA ACADEMY OF EXCELLENCE-

-4:31 PM-

Ichika walked slowly down the empty corridor, her fingers brushing lightly against the handrail.

Her heart hadn't calmed yet.

She could still feel the ghost of his touch — gentle, careful, unlike anything she expected from someone who carried the world the way he did.

She stopped by a window, watching snow gather on the courtyard below.

Her reflection stared back at her.

Calm on the outside.

Burning quietly beneath.

"…So this is what it feels like," she whispered.

Not a dramatic realization.

Not a sudden revelation.

Just a quiet certainty settling into place.

Her feelings weren't confusion anymore.

They were real.

And they were growing.

-DOWNTOWN SAPPORO STREET-

-6:02 PM-

The city was louder here.

Neon signs buzzed. Cars passed. Footsteps echoed against wet pavement.

Rikuu walked quickly, hands in his pockets, shoulders tight.

Masayoshi fell into step beside him.

"You're late again," Masayoshi said.

Rikuu didn't answer.

Masayoshi glanced sideways. "…You okay?"

"Yeah."

"You sure? You look like you lost a fight you didn't even have."

Rikuu stopped walking.

"…Shut up."

Masayoshi raised his hands in surrender. "Okay, okay."

They continued toward the alley.

But for the first time—

Rikuu's thoughts weren't on money.

Or survival.

Or routine.

They were on snow caught in pink hair.

On steady eyes that never looked away.

On warmth he didn't know how to hold.

-KOMORI RESIDENCE, SAPPORO-

-8:18 PM-

Ichika sat at her desk, notebook open but untouched.

The room was warm. Comfortable. Safe.

And yet her chest felt restless.

She replayed the moment on the rooftop again and again.

His hesitation.

His honesty.

The way he didn't pull away.

She pressed a hand lightly over her heart.

It felt different now.

Not just warm.

Alive.

Outside, snow continued to fall over the city, coverings streets, rooftops, and quiet alleyways alike.

Two worlds still existed.

But the space between them had changed.

And somewhere beneath winter's silence—

Fire had learned not just to burn…

but to stay.
