Chapter 40 - The Union

The cathedral of bone and smoke trembled, its walls pulsing with whispers. Choose. Choose.

Adrian stood at the altar, his fists clenched, his jaw tight. Elara was bound in chains, her gown shimmering faintly under spectral light. The spirits pressed closer, their forms solidifying into smoke and bone.

The whispers rose into a roar. Empire. Bride. Choose.

Adrian's breath caught. He had built his empire on control, on bending rivals to his will. But now, the curse demanded surrender.

Elara's gaze held his, sorrow deepening into defiance. "Adrian… whatever you choose, they'll twist it. But if you choose us—if you choose love—we can turn it against them."

Adrian's fury surged. He stepped forward, his voice sharp, unyielding. "I choose you. I choose us. Let the empire burn. Let the curse choke on what it cannot destroy."

The cathedral shook. Chains shattered, veils dissolved, and Elara's bonds fell away. She rushed to him, her hand trembling as it touched his. Their blood mingled, their vows whispered, their love blazing against the shadows.

The whispers faltered. The spirits hesitated. For the first time, the roar dimmed into silence.

The cathedral cracked, its walls collapsing into smoke. The city outside trembled, towers groaning, contracts burning. But the curse weakened, its hunger fading.

Adrian braced himself, fury burning, but awe gnawed at the edges of his certainty. He had surrendered his empire, but in that surrender, he had found something greater.

Elara's voice rose, steady and unyielding. "We are bound. Not by them. By us."

And in the reflection, Adrian saw himself—not the empire's ruler, not the man of control, but a groom united with his bride, their bond both weapon and sacrifice.

The whispers faded into silence. The city breathed again. But in the distance, faint and lingering, the spirits whispered one last word. Beginning.
