Mei Ling Lù had always taken the same shortcut home through the alley behind her apartment. The narrow brick walls were familiar and comforting. Until tonight.

A cold breeze brushed past her cheeks, sending a chill down her spine. Something felt wrong. The alley seemed darker than usual; even the streetlight flickered on and off.

Her footsteps echoed. The night seemed to hold its breath.

Strange.

There was hardly anyone on the street at this hour. The windows of the nearby buildings were dark, and the few streetlights did little to brighten the alley. She had walked this route countless times without giving it much thought, but tonight, even the slightest noise made her uneasy.

She heard a noise ahead, like the crack of a gun. She paused for a moment, wondering if she had imagined it. Then she heard it again.

Her legs wobbled, refusing to carry her forward. She strained her eyes through the dim light, in an attempt to see past the shadows.

Her curiosity battled with her instincts. Part of her wanted to run, but another part wanted to stay and watch.

Then she saw them. Two men in black suits exchanged a heavy briefcase.

She wiped her damp palms against her thighs.

One of the men turned toward her. Their eyes met, and something in his gaze made her stomach turn.

"Hey! Did you see that?" His shout echoed through the alley.

Fear flooded her as she turned to run, but the men's shadows almost caught up with hers.

Just then, a figure stepped in front of her. His eyes were cold as ice, yet strangely calm, like he had anticipated her fear before she even felt it.

"Don't move," he said, his voice low. It was commanding, yet soft.

She swallowed, but her throat remained dry.

Who… who is he?

She suspected he had guns in his pockets and knives beneath his shirt, just like the other men.

Her heart pounded so hard it felt like it would jump out of her chest. Her fingers curled and uncurled against her thighs.

Her eyes scanned him. A black pistol was tucked neatly in his side pocket.

Is he also one of them?

As the men in black approached, their footsteps echoing in the alley, she backed away.

He watched her from the corner of his eye as he stood between her and the threat.

Mei Ling's eyes swept the alley. The street was empty, and she could feel the danger looming around them.

I should scream. Someone will hear me, but will they come fast enough?

One of the men lunged forward, his knife flashing in the faint streetlight. The stranger grabbed the attacker's wrist. The knife slipped from the man's grasp and hit the ground. He twisted the man's arm, and the attacker staggered back, clutching his wrist and hissing in pain.

Mei Ling watched in disbelief. Everything had happened so quickly that she struggled to make sense of it. One moment, the man was rushing toward the stranger, and the next, he was struggling to free his wrist. She hadn't expected the stranger to grab the attacker so quickly, and the ease with which he disarmed him only made her more uncertain about him.

"Stay behind me," he said. His tone was casual, yet it left no room for argument.

She obeyed, resting her back against the wall.

Mei Ling's shaky breathing filled her ears.

The men in black paused, clearly unsettled by the man standing in their way.

Her shoulders tensed.

She was caught between danger and protection, with no idea who to trust.

"I need you to trust me," he said.

Trust him? I barely know anything about him. I don't even know his name.

Yet, standing behind him gave her some relief, even if she didn't trust him. She hated that she had to depend on a complete stranger, especially one who carried a gun. But with the men coming closer, she had little choice.

A shout from the men in black made her jump. They moved forward again, their weapons shining in the dark. Mei Ling's chest tightened, and her head had begun to ache.

The alley felt smaller as the men came closer, their voices growing louder. Her fingers clenched into fists as she tried to find courage.

The first attacker sprang forward, and she flinched, holding her breath. The stranger charged at him, stopping him without uttering a word.

She released the breath she had been holding.

For the first time, she noticed the little things: his eyes watching for danger and the slight tension in his muscles. She couldn't tear her eyes away.

"Don't move. Stay calm," she told herself, trying to control her panic, though she knew staying still could get her killed.

The stranger walked further, urging the men to fight him, his coat brushing against the wall. He didn't look at her, yet she felt safe with him.

The men in black backed away, slipping into the darkness as if they had given up.

Mei Ling's knees felt weak as she pressed herself against the wall, trying to catch her breath.

She kept her eyes on the spot where they had disappeared, waiting for one of them to return. Even after their footsteps faded, she remained on edge. She didn't know who the men were or what they had been doing, and part of her feared finding out.

The stranger stepped closer to her while she leaned back a little.

He lifted his hand and touched her cheek softly.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.

Mei Ling's head spun slightly. She wondered who he was, why he had appeared out of nowhere, and why his presence made her feel unusually safe.

She stared at him, unable to speak, as he waited for her reply.

The alley was quiet now. The danger was gone.

At least, for now.

Who was this man, and why had he chosen to protect her, a stranger, from a danger she didn't even understand? She had no answers to these questions.

She didn't know if the danger had truly passed or if it was only waiting for the next moment.
