Chapter 96 - Chapter 96 Inner Truth

Elisabeth's POV

Fire raced through every inch of my body, burning along my nerves like liquid lightning. My eyelids felt heavy as concrete slabs, but I forced them open anyway. The crash, the screaming metal, Jefferson's face - all of it should have been right there. Instead, I found myself sprawled across an endless field under a colorless sky that looked neither day nor night.

My throat felt raw when I called out, "Jefferson?"

Silence answered back. Of course it did.

I struggled to my elbows, my muscles shaking like I'd run a marathon. The field stretched in every direction, empty and haunting. No wreckage. No blood. No sign of what had happened.

"This is exactly why you'll never amount to anything, Elisabeth Kendrick."

The voice froze my blood solid. I knew that voice because it was mine, but wrong somehow. Twisted. I turned slowly, my skin crawling.

There I was. Or something wearing my face, anyway.
