The debt I owed to Malcolm Kendrick, one I had never wanted to acknowledge, was finally settled. Because of that payment, Malcolm would live to see another day. In a twist of fate that I never could have predicted months ago, Malcolm and I had become allies.
We now shared a common enemy.
Rex Cross.
I would never have seen it coming. If someone had asked me to identify the mastermind behind the chaos, the killings, and the destruction, Rex wouldn't have even made my list of suspects.
The man had been insignificant. Unnoticed. A shadow lurking in the background of every situation.
The only reason I had ever acknowledged Rex's existence was because of how close he had been to Elisabeth. That alone had been enough to make me hate him, but I hadn't thought much beyond that simple jealousy. I hadn't seen Rex as a threat. I hadn't considered him capable of anything beyond being an annoyance.
