"How did everything go?" Eden's voice drifted across the living room, calm yet tinged with genuine interest. She remained curled on the sofa, a paperback novel balanced on her knees, afternoon light streaming through the windows and casting golden patterns across her relaxed features.
I let my purse fall onto the nearest chair with more force than necessary, the weight of my morning settling heavily on my shoulders like a stubborn fog that refused to lift. "Same as always, Eden. They think only about themselves, never considering anyone else." The words came out harsher than I meant them to, but my patience had worn thin hours ago. "Since I was already here in America anyway, what was the point of refusing? But let me tell you something." I fished my phone from my jacket pocket. "The manager wasn't even the worst part of my morning. There was this incredibly rude woman at the office. Just look at what she did to my phone."
