Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine

⭐ CHAPTER 9 — The Day After the Storm

(Author POV — Long, Dramatic)

By the next morning, the entire school felt different.

Cold.

Sharp.

Watching.

Students didn't whisper quietly anymore — they whispered loudly, making sure Amara heard every word.

"There she is."

"She caused the office drama yesterday."

"Vanessa said Kyle was never hers."

"She's forcing Kyle to stay with her."

"She thinks she's special."

Amara walked down the hallway with her books held close to her chest, trying to ignore the stares burning into her back.

Every few steps, someone moved away from her like she carried bad luck.

It felt like walking through fog — thick, uncomfortable, heavy.

But she didn't break her pace.

She kept her chin up even though her stomach twisted with each comment.

Then someone called out loudly:

"Where's your bodyguard boyfriend today?"

Laughter echoed down the corridor.

Amara felt her cheeks burn.

Before she could respond, a familiar voice cut through the noise:

"Right behind her."

Silence fell instantly.

Kyle walked up beside her, jaw tight, eyes cold enough to silence the hallway.

He didn't touch her.

But he stood close — very close — and it was enough to scare half the school.

He looked down at her gently.

"You okay?"

She nodded, even though she wasn't.

"Let's just get to class."

They started walking.

Every pair of eyes in the corridor followed them.

Kyle glared at anyone who stared too long.

A girl whispered, "Kyle's being too protective."

Kyle stopped walking, turned to her, and said clearly:

"Then stop giving us reasons to."

The girl froze.

People backed away instantly.

Amara pressed her lips together, fighting a mix of embarrassment… and something warm blooming in her chest.

No boy had ever defended her like that before.

⭐ Jonah's Cowardice

During break, Kyle spotted Jonah near the water dispenser.

Jonah froze the second their eyes met.

Kyle didn't hesitate — he walked straight toward him.

Jonah's face turned pale.

"Kyle— wait— I didn't mean—"

Kyle slammed his hand against the wall beside Jonah's head.

Students gasped.

"Kyle!" Jonah squeaked. "I-I'm sorry!"

Kyle lowered his voice, but the anger in it vibrated through the air.

"You lied about Amara. You helped Vanessa. You made her cry."

Jonah's eyes widened.

"I didn't mean it like that— I thought—"

"What you thought doesn't matter," Kyle cut in.

"You hurt her."

Jonah swallowed hard.

"I liked her, okay? I didn't know what else to do—"

Kyle stepped closer.

"You don't lie to destroy someone just because they didn't like you back."

Jonah trembled.

A teacher's voice echoed down the hallway:

"Break is over! Back to class!"

Kyle leaned in one last time.

"Stay away from her."

Jonah nodded quickly — almost shaking.

Kyle walked away, fists still clenched, pulse still tight with anger.

⭐ Vanessa Plots Again

On the other side of the school, Vanessa watched everything unfold with a clenched jaw.

She slammed her locker shut.

"Stupid Jonah," she muttered.

"He ruined everything."

Her best friend approached her.

"So what now? You'll give up?"

Vanessa glared at her.

"Give up? Never. Kyle is only defending Amara because he feels sorry for her."

Her friend looked unsure.

"Are you sure? Because yesterday in the office—"

"I KNOW WHAT I SAW," Vanessa snapped.

She paced back and forth.

"Kyle
