Chapter 18 - Companions

Mitsuko consulted Ogiya Junpei, asking, "But I don't know if my blood will work. Should we give it a try?"

"I want to try, but if I fail, please kill me. I don't want to lose all my memories and become a walking corpse," Ogiya Junpei pleaded, his eyes burning as he looked at Mitsuko.

Mitsuko sighed deeply and nodded, saying, "Alright, I promise you. If I fail, I will kill you!"

Junpei Ogiya was ready, while Mitsuko used her Nichirin Blade to slash open his palm.

"Junpei, drink my blood."

Junpei Ogiya opened his mouth and swallowed the blood that Mitsuko had given him.

Mitsuko looked at Ogiya Junpei expectantly.

However, Junpei Ogiya seemed completely unaffected, showing no change whatsoever.

Mitsuko's expression immediately turned grim: "Did we fail?"

In my memory, when Muzan Kibutsuji transformed a person into a demon, he only gave them blood and did nothing else.

Unless there are details that Mitsuko hasn't noticed.

Or perhaps Mitsuko's blood simply doesn't possess this ability.

Mitsuko was extremely unwilling. Was he really going to extinguish the hope that had finally appeared with his own hands...?

Suddenly.

Suddenly, Junpei Ogiya grabbed his own neck and collapsed to the ground, howling in pain.

Mitsuko was startled and quickly helped Ogiya Junpei up: "Junpei, what's wrong?"

Ogiya Junpei's face was contorted in agony, as if he were enduring immense pain: "It hurts...it hurts so much! I feel like my body is being scorched by the sun!"

Mitsuko remembered what Kūkai had told him back then.

'Besides the power of demons, your blood also possesses a power as intense as the blazing sun.'

If there truly is a power in one's blood that is like the sun, then feeding one's blood to Ogiya Junpei is tantamount to killing Ogiya Junpei.

Mitsuko was extremely anxious, but he had no solution and could only stand there helplessly.

Junpei Ogiya kept pounding his head; the pain in his brain was far more intense than the physical pain.

Memories suddenly flooded his mind, appearing repeatedly like a revolving lantern.

The blurry faces of my parents began to become clear.

Those lost, beautiful memories are returning to Junpei Ogiya's mind.

Despite the pain, Junpei Ogiya was still incredibly excited: "I'm back! All my memories have returned..."

Mitsuko also sensed that she was connecting with Ogiya Junpei, which meant that the blood was working.

suddenly.

Junpei Ogiya stared blankly ahead.

Because of her connection with Junpei Ogiya, Mitsuko could sense that someone was looking at the location where Junpei Ogiya was looking.

Junpei Ogiya murmured, "Dad, Mom... is that you?"

Junpei Ogiya's parents, Yusho Ogiya and Mei Ogiya, came into Junpei's view.

"I never thought I'd see you again, Junpei. It's truly a blessing from heaven."

Yusho and Mei wanted to reach out and stroke Junpei's head.

But Junpei seemed frightened and kept backing away, turning his back to Yusho and Mei, not daring to look at his parents.

Junpei Ogiya was filled with remorse and kept apologizing: "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, I didn't want to kill Mom and Dad, they must hate me so much, I'm so sorry..."

Yusho and Mei hugged Junpei from behind and gently comforted him, "What kind of parents would blame their own child? Besides, that wasn't Junpei's intention, was it? We should be the ones apologizing. As parents, we couldn't protect you and caused you to suffer."

Junpei Ogiya turned to look at Yusho and Mei, whom he had been longing to see again, but then suddenly covered his face and lowered his head in self-pity: "No! I killed many people, many, many people, and I ate people. I am no longer human, but a monster, an ugly monster."

Yusho and Mei gently pushed away Junpei's hands that were covering his face and looked earnestly into his eyes: "Junpei, you are not a monster. You are a kind and upright child. You are the fruit of our love and the continuation of our lives. Although our lives have come to an end, our lives have not ended. Junpei, you are the continuation of our lives."

Only those who have suffered can truly understand suffering and appreciate what they have. Perhaps you will face many detours and disappointments in the future, but the meaning of everything will only become clear in time. We hope that you, Junpei, can carry our hopes and witness your future.

Yusho and Mei embraced Junpei tenderly: "Junpei, the greatest joy in life is constantly discovering new things and encountering new bonds. Your life has just begun, and there are many more joys waiting for you to discover, so please don't lose hope in life, okay?"

Looking into Yusho and Mei's gentle eyes, Junpei Ogiya finally let out all the pent-up grievances he had been holding in his heart, burying his face in Yusho and Mei's arms and crying bitterly.

Mitsuko leaned against a tree trunk. Even though she only saw Junpei talking to himself, Mitsuko could feel all of Junpei's emotions at that moment.

"Did Junpei see his family...?"

Mitsuko thought of his parents, and a tear unknowingly rolled down his cheek and fell to the ground.

"I wonder if I'll ever see them again..." Mitsuko murmured to himself.

Yusho and Mei's bodies began to turn transparent. They said regretfully, "It seems our time has come, Junpei. We have to go."

Junpei Ogiya hugged Yusho and Mei tightly: "No, I don't want you to leave!"

Yusho and Mei ruffled Ogiya Junpei's hair and glanced at Mitsuko, who was leaning against a tree without saying a word: "Junpei, we're also very reluctant to part with you, but the constant separation and reunion is the main theme of life. You've already encountered new bonds, and it's time for us to say goodbye. We're already content to see you again. Junpei, promise me you'll live well and find happiness!"

Yusho and Mei gradually disappeared from Junpei's sight.

Junpei Ogiya tried to reach out and grab them, but he grasped at empty air.

Junpei Ogiya seemed to have lost all his strength, and sat blankly on the ground with a vacant look in his eyes, feeling lost and dejected.

After a long time.

Junpei Ogiya stood up from the ground.

At this moment, there was no more confusion or despair in Ogiya Junpei's eyes.

Instead, there is hope, hope for the future.

Mitsuko walked up to Junpei Ogiya and asked, "Have you said goodbye yet?"

Junpei Ogiya paused for a moment, looking at Mitsuko with surprise.

However, Junpei Ogiya did not ask how Mitsuko knew, but said with relief, "Ah, we've already said goodbye."

Mitsuko extended his hand once more: "Then, welcome to the team, my companion."

This time, Junpei Ogiya held Mitsuko's hand.
