Chapter 109 - The Benevolent Father Complex · Infiltration of the Manor

"It looks like there's only cola. That's really not good news." Opening the refrigerator in the kitchen, Zhou Yi discovered a rather unpleasant fact.

"If this is supposed to be a joke, then let me tell you—it's not funny at all." Logan rummaged through the cupboards, but found nothing except milk and cereal. "I can't imagine how a place this big doesn't even have a single can of beer."

"That, I can understand. This is a school, after all. And aside from Scott, most of the teachers here are women. Besides, I really don't think that gloomy guy Scott would like something as wonderful as alcohol." Zhou Yi's relationship with Scott was something nearly everyone knew about, so he didn't mind letting one more person know.

"You're right. He is a gloomy, dead-faced bastard." Logan slammed the cupboard door shut. "I just didn't expect him to lack even the most basic pleasure of being a man. God, a man who doesn't drink. I can't believe someone like that actually exists in this world—and that I'd run into him. What the hell!"

"Hey, Logan—catch." Zhou Yi tossed him a can. "Soda water. Think of it as sparkling wine. Might make you feel a little better."

Catching the so-called consolation prize, Logan's mood somehow improved despite himself.

"What can I say—thanks? Damn it, a can of soda. And it's warm!"

"You've got to learn how to comfort yourself. Really. You could learn a thing or two from me." Zhou Yi cracked open his cola and took a big gulp. "You know, I feel like I've reclaimed the youth I lost back in college!"

"Do you think soda has anything to do with my youth? And besides, I don't even remember having any damn youth!" Logan snapped irritably. For him, today had truly been a miserable day.

After all, it wasn't often that he opened up to anyone—especially not to another man. And just when he'd finally made a decision that was this difficult for him, he discovered that this miserable place didn't even allow him the option of drowning his sorrows in alcohol.

At that moment, he couldn't help wondering if there really was a Goddess of Fate. If so, then she must have had some seriously twisted relationship with him—otherwise she wouldn't be tormenting him like this.

Just as the two grown men were gloomily using soda to drown their sorrows, good news came from Ororo.

"Yi, we've caught that guy."

Hearing this, Zhou Yi immediately activated his super vision. Ororo and the others instantly appeared in his field of view. Just as she said, they had indeed captured the blue mutant. However, something about the situation felt off—the atmosphere between them was strange. It didn't look like an arrest so much as a medical rescue.

Because he noticed that Ororo hadn't restrained the man at all. Jean was even bandaging his wounds.

"I can see you now. Can you tell me what's going on? You all look a bit… odd."

"His name is Kurt Wagner. He was previously controlled by General Stryker using some unknown method—that's why he attacked the President. But the control has already worn off. He's one of us now. Don't worry, he's not a threat." Ororo explained. "Hank has already prepared for the return trip. We'll be back in two hours."

"Don't rush it. Washington airspace is restricted—especially at a time like this. If I were you, I'd take the long way around. After all, you've got a passenger who's still on the wanted list."

"I understand. See you later." Ororo hung up the communication again. It seemed she wouldn't be giving Zhou Yi any friendly looks for quite some time. Thinking of this, Zhou Yi let out a bitter smile.

"What's that look? Trouble in paradise?" Logan sidled up with a teasing expression. With his sharp hearing, he had naturally caught their conversation. And for him, seeing Zhou Yi stumble in matters of the heart was undeniably entertaining.

"Just a small issue. I'm working on it." Zhou Yi smiled faintly. "But Logan, I just remembered something. When I came in earlier, I think I saw a boy hanging around Rogue all the time—looked like he was chasing after her."

The moment Logan heard this, he crushed the soda can in his hand. Three steel claws instantly sprang out, and his expression turned downright terrifying. Zhou Yi knew that look well—he'd seen it on plenty of fathers back in high school.

The only difference was that those fathers preferred shotguns, while Logan preferred claws.

"Tell me. Who is it?" Logan's voice became chillingly dangerous. This was evident enough from the trembling body of the young man standing outside the door.

"Who could it be, I wonder? Do you know, Bobby?" Zhou Yi turned and pushed the door open, addressing the pale-faced youth outside.

The pressure radiating from Wolverine Logan was not something an ordinary person could withstand. He was a man who had truly walked out of mountains of corpses and seas of blood. The American Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and countless unnamed battles—all were part of his life experience. The number of corpses he had seen exceeded the number of living people this young man had ever encountered.

So when Bobby imagined himself as the target of Logan's fury, he realized just how terrifying it was. His heart was pounding so fast it was practically hitting Formula One speeds.

"I don't know, sir. I don't know anything!" In this situation, Bobby would never dare admit what he had been doing. It was true that he was pursuing Rogue—but not to the point of risking his life.

"Who are you? What are you doing here?" Logan bared his teeth as he questioned him. At this point, every eligible young man had become a suspicious target in his eyes. If he could, he wouldn't even mind roughing up each and every one of them.

"I'm Bobby, sir. I'm hungry. I came here to find something to eat." In front of Logan, Bobby instantly transformed into the most obedient Boy Scout, answering quickly and thoroughly. Even so, anyone could tell how nervous he was.

"That's enough, Logan. Put your claws away—you're scaring the kid." Zhou Yi interjected at the right moment. He had only meant to make a joke, to divert Logan's attention—not to have Logan actually maul someone. That would be far too tragic for an innocent bystander.

"I'll find that bastard. And when I do, he'd better pray he's got good insurance!" Logan retracted his claws, though he continued to snarl his threats. Having unexpectedly unleashed a surge of paternal instinct over Rogue, he was now the very image of an overprotective father.

"Maybe so, kid. Aren't you looking for food? Then hurry up. Or do you want to loiter here all night?" Zhou Yi quietly nudged Bobby in the back, signaling him to get out of Logan's line of sight as soon as possible. Otherwise, who knew what this sharp-instincted man might notice.

Bobby understood the hint. He shot Zhou Yi a resentful glance—clearly unhappy about having his secret exposed—then immediately moved. At this point, he didn't dare spend another second standing in front of Logan.

Just then, Logan suddenly twitched his ears and frowned.

"They're back already? How could it be this fast?"

Zhou Yi closed his eyes and listened for a moment, then his expression darkened. "That's not the Blackbird. It's helicopters. Looks like someone's attacking the base. Logan, Bobby—notify the kids downstairs. We're evacuating immediately. I'll go get the ones upstairs!"

There were nearly two hundred children at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, many of them under ten years old. In a situation like this, Zhou Yi had to make protecting the children his top priority—this was also the most important task Ororo had entrusted to him.

In almost an instant, he vanished from before their eyes. Both men knew he was already in action, so they moved at once as well. Everyone understood how serious the situation was—hesitate even a second, and a child could be put in danger.

Because whoever was coming now was definitely no friend. Their methods toward mutants were well known among mutants themselves—cold, ruthless, and utterly unrestrained by the fact that their targets might be children. They had to complete the evacuation before these people made their move.

At that very moment, outside Xavier's mansion.

General William Stryker stepped out of his vehicle under the guard of heavily armed soldiers. Gazing at the ancient, massive estate before him, he couldn't help muttering,

"Xavier Manor… it's been a long time since I last visited this place. This time, I'd like to see who's still capable of protecting you. Lieutenant, tell me—are our advance teams ready?"

"Reporting, sir! The advance team's helicopters are in position and standing by. They can breach the target at any time. In addition, our main force has already surrounded the area. We can ensure that no targets escape." The lieutenant at Stryker's side promptly reported. As his aide, he had to admit that his superior was truly a strategic genius.

To control one of the two most powerful mutants in the world in such a short time—and then directly strike at the mutants' stronghold—such achievements were rare even among American generals. To be honest, he felt proud to serve someone like this. After all, for a soldier, nothing was more worthy of boasting than military merit.

"Very good. After waiting all these years, I finally don't have to wait anymore. Issue the order—the advance team will breach the target immediately. You are authorized to open fire at will. The rest of the forces, close in and surround the area. Don't let a single mutant bastard escape. Remember this: what you're doing today is for humanity's bright future. Once we succeed, the mutant threat will become history, and you will be heroes who saved mankind's future. So show them no mercy. Understood?"

Stryker's voice echoed through the military communication system, reaching every soldier's ears—and it only further stimulated their nerves. Just as Stryker said, they could hardly wait to earn their glory.

As always, the elite special forces were the first to respond. Smoke grenades smashed through the windows of the top-floor rooms, and fully armed commandos rappelled down from helicopters onto the mansion's rooftop. They would be the vanguard of the first assault.

Weapons were already chambered. Against mutants—even children—they would show no mercy.
