Chapter 143 - Drowning Sorrows with Alcohol, Coercion by Force

Jill Valentine was once a member of S.T.A.R.S. Of course, she was currently suspended pending investigation.

However, for her, whether she was suspended or not didn't really matter anymore. The S.T.A.R.S team in Raccoon City was already defunct, and even if she were allowed to continue, she wouldn't have any interest.

What she wanted most now was to avenge her teammates.

However, thinking of this, she couldn't help but feel a wave of sorrow. The huge gap between ideals and reality made her feel a deep sense of despair. The giant shadow of Umbrella made it difficult for her to even breathe, and as for bringing it down, even she felt it was a pipe dream.

When people are distressed, they always like to drown their sorrows with alcohol, and Jill was no exception. In fact, she had already spent a considerable amount of time in this bar. Only here could she forget the bitterness in her heart.

"Old Josh, another drink."

The bar owner shook his head, reaching out to press down on the glass in front of Jill. He sighed.

"I know you're sad, Jill. But drinking won't solve the problem."

"Damn, when did you become a preacher?" Jill pushed his hand away, snatching the bottle from him. "I'm a customer, creating income for you. You should just fill my glass and not nag me like my mom."

"If it weren't for the fact that your father and I are old friends, I wouldn't bother saying any of this nonsense." Old Josh sighed, taking back the bottle, but still poured her a drink. "Last one. Today's is on me. Otherwise, you should settle the bill from the past few days first."

"Alright, alright." Jill waved her hand in annoyance, but then focused her attention on the news playing on the TV.

"The current outbreak of madman attacks in Raccoon City has increased again. As of today, dozens of cases have occurred. The police department stated that they will do their best to stop these madmen from causing more incidents, but the situation doesn't look optimistic at the moment."

Seeing Jill so concerned about the news, Old Josh also glanced over. Then he sighed.

"This world is really chaotic. Not long ago, a Mutant almost demolished Paris, and now we have a bunch of lunatics running around in this small place. I really don't know where one can feel safe anymore."

"If I were you, I'd stay far away from this damn city." Jill took a sip of her drink, giving a light warning. "These madmen are very likely to take your life."

"Don't treat me like those soft-bellied guys who can't even hold a gun!" Old Josh immediately retorted. "Even if I'm walking home, I'll have a Shotgun in my bag. If any madman dares to bare his teeth at me, I'll blast off a few of his big pieces."

"They're no use unless you blow their heads open," Jill chuckled, lighting a cigarette. "Shoot them in the head before they get to you. Otherwise, you're dead. Doesn't matter if you get bitten or scratched."

Old Josh choked on his words at that, taking a long moment to respond.

"You're joking, right? Seriously, that's not funny."

"You think I'm joking?" Jill's expression was serious in the smoke, so serious that Old Josh couldn't quite read her. But he still stuck to his own thoughts.

"Then I think you must be drunk. Take my advice, Jill. You're still young, just finish this drink and go home. You'll naturally forget about some things after a while."

Jill sneered, exhaling smoke that obscured her expression.

"You think I'm crazy too, you all think I'm crazy. But it's not me who's going crazy, you'll regret this later."

Old Josh shrugged, not taking Jill's warning to heart at all. In his eyes, this old friend's child was definitely just overly depressed from being suspended, and she would naturally get better after a while. He began to busy himself with his work, and Jill didn't want to waste any more words on him.

These days, too many people had treated her like a lunatic, a liar, a spreader of rumors. She was used to their disdain.

Now, she just silently sipped the strong liquor in front of her, trying to get drunk and forget that nightmare. But no matter how much she drank, she couldn't forget. Those things had completely changed her life.

Jill was still drinking, but someone had joined her. The person watched her for a while before finally speaking.

"Jill Valentine. That's the name, right?"

Jill squinted at the strange Asian man, with his tall frame and unfamiliar face. She didn't recognize him at all.

"Do we know each other?"

"No, I just wanted to confirm. Are you?" The stranger looked at her, his black, featureless eyes faintly glowing.

"I think you have the wrong person." Jill was tipsy, but still very alert. She quietly reached behind her, where she kept a handgun.

"I don't think I'm mistaken, unless there are two people in the world who look exactly alike." The stranger smiled. "But if you still need to confirm it. Then, may I ask if you are Jill Valentine, a former S.T.A.R.S member? And now the city's notorious crazy detective?"

As soon as he said this, Jill immediately stood up from her chair, drawing a handgun from behind and pointing it at the stranger. She also issued a cold question.

"Are you sent by Umbrella?"

It has to be said, she was very lucky. Because at this time, there were no other customers in the bar besides her. Otherwise, just by threatening with a gun, she could be on television again.

"If I were you, I wouldn't do that." The stranger shook his head, wanting to get closer. But as soon as he moved, Jill immediately released the safety on her gun.

"If I were you, I wouldn't do that either." She said the same words, but the meaning was completely different. "Answer me, who exactly are you?"

"Seriously, shooting at such a close range is really unsafe!" The stranger shrugged and suddenly lunged forward. Before Jill could react, he pressed down on the barrel of the gun with his hand. Although Jill had subconsciously pulled the trigger, the bullet didn't hit its target. Instead, it smashed the chair next to them.

This immediately made Jill feel very uneasy. She quickly swung her fist at the stranger's wrist, trying to make him release her gun by hitting his wrist joint. But the stranger reacted faster than her.

He directly bent his arm and used his elbow to push against Jill's shoulder, causing her body to immediately tilt. He then moved in close, grabbing her swinging fist with one hand and gently pushing. Jill, who had already drunk a lot of alcohol, couldn't maintain her balance at this moment and fell backward.

Just as she was about to fall to the ground, the stranger suddenly pulled her, pulling her into his embrace. However, his posture wasn't suggestive, but rather coercive. His arm was wrapped around her neck, and his other hand held Jill's gun against the small of her back.

"The closer the gun is, the less threatening it is because you don't have much time to react," the stranger's mocking voice rang in her ear, igniting Jill's anger. She desperately tried to break free from the stranger's hold, but couldn't escape his grasp.

It seemed she could only surrender. However, she wasn't alone here.

A Shotgun extended from the side, aimed at the stranger's head. Old Josh's menacing voice followed.

"Let her go, you bastard. Or you'll taste Buckshot."

"Alright, alright. Don't accidentally fire, or both this beauty and I will have to go get our faces fixed," the stranger slowly raised the hand holding the gun and, under Old Josh's watchful gaze, gradually placed the gun on the bar.

Old Josh stared at him intently, but his attention inevitably wavered when the handgun passed in front of his eyes. It was at this moment that the stranger seized the opportunity.

The pistol suddenly landed on the table, making Old Josh's eyes jump. The stranger seized the opportunity, swinging his arm and slamming it directly onto Old Josh's Shotgun. The shotgun's muzzle shook violently, and at this moment, it was no longer aimed at its original target. Taking advantage of this small gap, the stranger pulled out a Revolver.

The huge, exquisite Revolver was pressed against Old Josh's chin before he could bring the muzzle back, forcing him to stop his actions obediently. The stranger smiled softly.

"I don't like to say it, but it seems I've won. How about we sit down and talk?"

Jill was still struggling. She had tried to elbow the stranger in the ribs, but it didn't work. It felt like sparring with a special forces combat instructor; all your attacks were ineffective. Instead, under his attacks, you were like a small boat in a storm, unable to find your bearings.

So, in the end, she could only ask dejectedly.

"What do you want to talk about? If Umbrella sent you to silence me, I suggest you just kill me. Unless I'm dead, I'll never shut up about that."

The stranger sighed. He gestured for Old Josh to drop the Shotgun. After he complied, the stranger put away the Revolver and released Jill, who was being controlled.

"I have no ill intentions, Ms. Valentine. I want to talk to you about S.T.A.R.S. I think you might need some help."

As soon as she was out of the stranger's embrace, Jill immediately backed away, putting some distance between them. She eyed the stranger warily and asked,

"Help? What kind of help can you offer me?"

"Revenge for your comrades, and protection for the residents of this city. Isn't that enough?"

Revenge. Hearing the word, Jill's weary heart felt like an engine being fueled. It was all she had been thinking about. She knew that if she couldn't avenge her fallen teammates, she would never find peace in her life. So, whether for herself or for her fallen comrades, she had to agree.

But at least her reason hadn't completely abandoned her; she wouldn't blindly trust a stranger. Not unless he could show her something to believe in.

"Who are you, and why are you helping me?"
