Chapter 234 - Foolish Politicians, Internal Troubles Within S.H.I.E.L.D.

The moment Nick Fury's words landed, the man he had referred to as "sir" nearly exploded from anger.

What did Fury mean by "giving them a surprise"?

Did he seriously think watching Zhou Yi tie up spies like dumplings and dump them at a police station in front of a swarm of reporters counted as a "surprise"?

And what was that comment about paying more attention to his family and not being able to tell if a woman was acting?

Wasn't that basically saying:

"Be careful—your wife may have done things behind your back that you don't know about"?

If people hadn't been holding him back, the man would definitely have charged at Fury for a one-on-one fight between men.

"Director Fury, you may return to your own work. Let's pretend this mission never happened."

The World Security Council hurriedly defined the tone of the entire incident.

Having received approval, Nick Fury didn't even look back as he walked straight out of the meeting room.

This wasn't the first time he had dealt with these people.

Nor was it the first time he had witnessed their creatively idiotic behavior.

He already knew exactly what to do and how to respond.

After Fury left, the council member who had nearly burst from anger was still shouting furiously:

"Let go of me, Pierce! Let go! How dare he speak to me like that! I'm going to fight him one-on-one! I'll show him what I'm capable of!"

Faced with such an absurd teammate, the man restraining him—Pierce—felt an overwhelming urge to pin him to the ground and beat some sense into him.

Did this idiot seriously think he could compare himself to Nick Fury?

Nick Fury was a Level 10 agent—the legendary "King of Spies."

The number of people Fury had killed could fill every room in his house.

If nobody stopped this fool, then the next time people searched for him, they'd probably have to do it like collecting stamps from around the world.

Because there was no doubt—

His body parts would be scattered across every corner of the planet.

Even though Pierce internally despised this pig-headed teammate, he still patiently calmed him down little by little.

That was politics.

Knowing how to handle people was the key to climbing higher.

And that was precisely the life philosophy of former S.H.I.E.L.D. Director and current chairman of the World Security Council:

Alexander Goodwin Pierce.

After leaving the World Security Council meeting—which, in Fury's opinion, was a complete waste of time—Nick Fury returned directly from the S.H.I.E.L.D. Triskelion headquarters to the Helicarrier.

Technically, this place should have been under Commander Hill's authority.

But because the Triskelion was full of idiots lately, Fury preferred staying here instead.

Here, he had capable subordinates who could help solve his problems.

He also had secrets that couldn't be told to anyone else—secrets only he could control.

Most importantly—

Here, he could completely ignore the idiotic orders issued by those idiotic council members.

Honestly, if things hadn't already been exposed, Fury would never have known that behind Umbrella, the military's Super Soldier Program, and that insane mutant extermination project…

…stood the shadow of the Security Council itself.

Sometimes he genuinely wondered whether they were the World Security Council—

—or the World Security Destruction Council.

No matter what, Fury had already classified them as useless teammates.

If possible, S.H.I.E.L.D. needed to keep as much distance from them as it could.

Sooner or later, those idiots would drag everyone into the abyss.

Straight into complete ruin.

Still, Fury understood one thing very clearly:

S.H.I.E.L.D. could never truly separate itself from the Security Council.

Because structurally, S.H.I.E.L.D. belonged directly under it.

S.H.I.E.L.D. was merely a tool of the Council.

And tools could never escape the control of their masters.

So the only thing Fury could do was hide certain secrets within S.H.I.E.L.D.—

Secrets known only to himself.

Only secrets could guarantee safety.

At least, that was what he firmly believed.

Arriving at the command deck he knew best, Fury immediately entered work mode.

"Has Coulson returned?"

"Sir, Coulson just left for the Center," Commander Hill replied.

Her complexion was slightly pale as she appeared before him.

As always, her movements were clean, efficient, almost machine-like.

"You should know what he found in the aftermath of that New York battle."

"Of course I know what he found. A giant hand."

Fury waved casually.

"Tell the Center people that once the research is complete, I want the report sent directly to me. And seal that hand away somewhere with the highest level of security."

After making arrangements, Fury glanced curiously at Hill.

"I remember you were sick. Why are you still here?"

"I feel much better now. It doesn't affect my work."

Hill answered crisply.

But Fury's expression became strange.

The truth was, every month around this time, Hill would take leave.

A woman's monthly cycle.

Only now did Fury realize something:

Even a cold, iron-willed woman like Maria Hill handled it differently from ordinary women.

Should he praise her recovery speed?

Or her endurance?

Fury silently considered the question before deciding it was wiser not to dwell on it.

"You should be resting right now," he said finally.

There was genuine concern in his tone.

To Fury, Hill was almost like a daughter.

"Coulson alone can't control the situation. Without me arranging things, he can't deal with the military people."

Hill spoke calmly.

But Fury knew that wasn't the real reason.

The real reason she was here—

was because she was worried about a certain person involved in that chaotic New York superhero battle.

And that person definitely wasn't Coulson.

Coulson believed he had hidden things well.

But what he didn't know was that the person who understood Maria Hill best wasn't him—

it was Nick Fury, who had practically watched her grow up like a father.

Fury knew exactly what she was thinking.

The reason he never pointed it out was because he hoped she would realize it herself.

But judging from things now…

That probably wasn't going to happen.

Maria Hill had already fallen deeper and deeper without even noticing it herself.

Fury wanted to advise her.

But after remembering the news he had just received today, he decided there was no need.

Once that news came back—

she would give up on her own.

So in the end, Fury chose to maintain his usual cold image.

He had no intention of letting his subordinates see him as some kind of caring mother figure.

That would damage both his authority and internal management.

Returning to business, Fury continued:

"Have we found out who leaked the Super Soldier Program?"

"At present, it appears to be a civilian organization."

Hill flipped through the files in her hand and found the analysts' conclusion.

"A civilian organization?"

Fury sounded like he had just heard a joke.

"Since when can civilian organizations break into the Pentagon's systems and obtain classified information of this level?"

"If even civilians can do this, then what exactly are our intelligence departments doing?"

Sometimes, he felt other people simply had better everything.

Even better subordinates.

"They get paid that much money and still accomplish nothing."

"Otherwise why did it take outsiders exposing Umbrella before we discovered all the disgusting things hidden inside?"

Hill wisely remained silent under Fury's criticism.

Truthfully, she shared his dissatisfaction with the intelligence division's performance.

If they couldn't even outperform a civilian group—

their value was highly questionable.

The intelligence personnel themselves were also furious.

They were elites transferred from various departments.

Yet now they were being humiliated by what amounted to grassroots amateurs.

No one could tolerate that.

After venting, Fury finally gave them a chance.

"My elite intelligence officers," he said sarcastically.

"Tell me—have you found anything about this organization yet?"

Thankfully for them, Fury had finally stopped mocking them.

One agent immediately stepped forward with information.

"The organization is called Tide of Fury."

"We've already obtained partial information and identities of some of its leaders. Arrest operations can begin at any time."

"At least you haven't disappointed me again."

Fury nodded.

"Arrange surveillance on all of them. I want to know what information they still possess."

"And how exactly they obtained it."

"Most importantly—don't alert them."

"Tell Coulson this mission is his responsibility."

Hill frowned.

"You've been assigning Coulson too many tasks lately."

She understood that Coulson and herself were essentially Fury's left and right hands.

But that didn't mean everything should be dumped onto Coulson alone.

After all, Coulson was only a Level 8 agent.

There were more than a dozen agents of the same rank inside S.H.I.E.L.D.

Giving everything to Coulson so openly could easily create dangerous ideas among others.

Even spies fought fiercely over power.

Especially when competing for control over an organization as influential as S.H.I.E.L.D.

Those struggles could become extremely vicious.

"That's because only you two are the people I trust the most."

Fury only spoke of trust.

But he didn't mention his true concern.

He had already discovered traces of something lurking within S.H.I.E.L.D.

And because of that discovery, he had become deeply wary of certain people.

If secrets could no longer be protected—

they would only lead to disaster.

What worried Fury most was this:

How many people had already infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D.?

And how many of them were searching for his secrets?
