Chapter 99 - Chapter 99: The Flawless Copy

The morning light felt cold and gray. Lina did not sleep at all. She sat by the dorm window, watching the empty courtyard below. On the bed behind her, Mira finally fell into a restless sleep. Even in her dreams, Mira's face was tight with fear.

A soft knock came at the door.

Lina tensed. She walked over and opened it just a crack.

It was Seren. She looked terrible. Dark circles hung under her eyes, and her hands were shaking.

Seren did not wait for an invitation. She slipped inside and closed the door quietly. She pulled Lina toward the small bathroom and turned on the faucet to mask their voices.

"We need to talk," Seren whispered. Her voice was rough.

Lina looked at her friend's pale face. "What is it?"

Seren looked around, even though they were alone. "Last night, I tried to use my echo. I just wanted to check the hallway. But I heard a voice."

"A dead person?" Lina asked gently.

Seren shook her head. Tears welled up in her eyes. "No. It was you, Lina. You were crying. You said you were sorry. You said you could not save me."

Lina felt the room tilt. The air suddenly felt too thin to breathe. "But I am alive. I am right here."

"I know," Seren whispered. A tear slipped down her cheek. "That is why I am so scared. I am not hearing a ghost from the past. I am hearing the future."

Lina wanted to deny it. She wanted to tell Seren she was wrong, that echoes only worked on the dead. But the mark on Lina's arm burned with a dull ache. The glowing countdowns were real. The danger was real.

"We will change it," Lina said firmly. She reached out and squeezed Seren's cold hands. "I will not let that happen. I promise."

Later that morning, they walked to the dining hall together. The academy was waking up. Students were laughing, talking, and carrying heavy books. It felt like a completely normal day.

But it was not normal.

At the center table sat Kai. Or the thing that looked exactly like him.

He was eating breakfast. He sat up perfectly straight. He greeted every student who walked by with a polite, warm smile. He looked like the perfect student.

Lina stopped at the doorway. She watched him closely, searching for a crack in the mask.

The real Kai always tapped his fingers on the table when he was thinking. He always pushed his food around his plate if he was worried. He never smiled at strangers this early in the morning, and he always had a messy strand of hair falling in his eyes.

This Kai did none of those things. He ate neatly. He smiled perfectly. His hair was perfectly in place. He was a flawless copy.

Mira stepped up beside Lina. She gripped Lina's sleeve, her knuckles turning white. "He is pretending," Mira whispered, her voice trembling.

"I know," Lina said softly.

Suddenly, the False Kai stopped eating. He did not turn his head, but his eyes shifted. He looked directly at Lina across the crowded, noisy room.

He raised his hand and gave a small, perfect wave.

Lina did not wave back. She just stared at those empty, smiling eyes, knowing the countdown was still ticking down, one second at a time.
