Chapter 145 - Chapter 145: The Law of Severance

The massive iron gates of the Academy of Veils stood open. For the first time in her life, Lina was not looking at them as a prisoner. She was looking at them as a graduate.

Headmistress Shen stood at the top of the stone steps, smiling warmly. "Remember," the Headmistress called out over the morning breeze. "The academy will always be your home. But the world needs its gardeners."

Lina bowed deeply, along with Mira, Seren, Reyon, and Nia. Then, they turned and walked down the long, winding mountain path.

In Lina's hand, the golden compass hummed. The needle pointed steadily toward the north, toward the dark purple stain on the map.

As they walked, the air began to change. The pure, sweet scent of the Spirit Root faded, replaced by the smell of woodsmoke, roasted chestnuts, and damp earth. The magical veil that hid the academy from the outside world shimmered ahead of them like a curtain of morning mist.

"Stay close," Nia whispered. "I have read about the mortal realms, but none of us have actually stepped outside the veil."

They pushed through the mist.

Suddenly, the quiet mountain path vanished. The noise hit them like a physical wave.

They were standing at the edge of a massive, bustling city. Jade-paved streets stretched out in every direction, packed with thousands of people. Tall, multi-story wooden teahouses with sweeping red roofs lined the roads. Glowing paper lanterns swayed in the breeze, even in the daylight. Merchants shouted their prices, carts rattled over the stones, and the air was thick with the smell of spices and sweet tea.

It was beautiful. It was vibrant. It looked like a painting come to life.

"It is so loud," Seren whispered, her hands hovering near her ears. "There are so many voices. So many living souls."

"Keep your heads down," Nia advised, pulling her hood up. "We need to find an inn and figure out how to travel north without drawing attention."

They walked into the crowded market. Lina kept her hand in her pocket, her fingers brushing the warm golden compass.

As they passed a narrow alleyway between two teahouses, Lina stopped.

The golden word Kai beneath her skin flared with a sudden, sharp heat.

She looked into the shadows of the alley. Huddled behind a stack of wooden crates was a mortal man in simple merchant clothes. He was pale and shivering. And clinging to his back, invisible to everyone else, was a shadow-leech.

It was a small, parasitic spirit made of gray sludge. It was feeding on the man's life force, making him sick and weak.

"Lina, what is it?" Mira asked, noticing Lina's tense posture.

"There is a leech," Lina whispered. "It is eating his luck. If we leave it, he will die by the end of the week."

"We cannot interfere," Nia hissed, grabbing Lina's arm. "We do not know the laws of this city."

"It is just a small spark," Lina said. "I will not let it kill him."

Lina stepped into the alley. She did not draw a weapon. She simply raised her right hand and let a single, tiny drop of golden ink fall from her fingertip.

The golden light hit the shadow-leech. The parasite let out a silent shriek and dissolved into clean, white ash.

The mortal man took a deep, shuddering breath. The color instantly returned to his cheeks. He blinked, looking around in confusion, suddenly feeling light and healthy. He smiled and walked out of the alley, completely unaware of what had just happened.

Lina turned back to her friends, offering a small smile. "See? It is fixed."

But her friends were not smiling. They were staring up at the sky, their faces drained of all color.

"Lina..." Reyon choked out. "Look up."

Lina looked.

The bright blue sky above the city had turned a bruised, angry purple. The bustling noise of the market seemed to fade, replaced by a deep, terrifying hum that vibrated in her teeth.

Suddenly, the clouds parted.

Three massive, glowing golden chains shot down from the heavens. They moved faster than lightning.

Before Lina could even raise her hands to defend herself, the chains wrapped tightly around her wrists and her waist. The metal was burning hot, searing through her robes and biting into her skin.

The chains yanked her upward, lifting her feet off the ground.

"Lina!" Mira screamed, lunging forward.

But a wall of invisible, heavy pressure slammed into the group, pushing them back. It was a spiritual suppression field. It was so dense it felt like the air had turned to solid lead.

A booming voice echoed from the sky, speaking in the ancient, formal tongue of the outside world.

"UNREGISTERED INTERFERENCE DETECTED. YOU HAVE ALTERED THE MORTAL FATE. YOU HAVE BROKEN THE LAW OF SEVERANCE."

Lina struggled against the golden chains, but they were not just holding her body. They were binding her karma. She could feel her spiritual energy being drained, locked away by the sheer, overwhelming authority of the world's rules.

A figure dropped from the sky, landing lightly on the cobblestones in front of her.

He was a man wearing the pristine, silver-trimmed white robes of an Imperial Censor. His eyes were completely blank, and he held a heavy iron brush in his hand.

"In the mortal realm, magic is a privilege, not a right," the Censor said, his voice cold and devoid of mercy. "Cultivators may not touch the lives of mortals. You have broken the karmic balance, girl. And now, you will pay the debt."

He raised the iron brush, the tip glowing with a terrifying, dark red light.

The outside world was not just different from the academy. It was a place of absolute, unforgiving laws. And Lina had just broken the most sacred one.
