CHAPTER 26: THE ROOM BEFORE BLACKHAVEN
There are rooms you leave... but their memories lock you inside.
Night at Eclipse Tower is restless. But because Evelyn can't sleep.
She stands before the massive glass, Blackhaven sprawling below like scarred skin.
This city never promised anything
only demands payment.
Behind her, Viktor leans against the doorframe, not approaching. Diego on the sofa, eyes fixed on her silhouette.
Three people, one room. Each in a different moment of their lives.
"Where are you?" Viktor asks, voice low.
Evelyn doesn't turn: "In a room before Blackhaven."
Diego looks up: "Which room?"
She closes her eyes.
Before Blackhaven seven years ago
Small room, damp moldy walls, window stuck half-open.
Bleach smell mixed with rusted metal.
Evelyn wasn't Evelyn then. Just a nameless girl, no money, nowhere to go.
V. S. leans against the doorframe worn coat, tired face, eyes calm to the point of terrifying.
"You don't belong here," he says.
She laughs faintly: "Neither do you."
He extends his hand.
Just one sentence:
"Come with me. I'm not saving you. I'm just opening the door."
She stares at that hand for a long time.
Not from trust. But from no other choice.
---
Evelyn opens her eyes. Her breath skips a beat.
Viktor is behind her now, close enough for her to feel his warmth but not touching.
"V. S. opened the door for you," he says.
"But he's not the one holding you back."
Diego stands, steps beside, stares into the glass:
"He thinks the one who opens the door decides where you go."
Evelyn turns:
"No. He thinks the first one has the right."
Viktor looks at her:
"So why did you leave him?"
She silent for seconds.
Then says truth: "Because he started calling me 'his'."
Diego chuckles softly, no joy:
"Then he'll never give up."
"Because he doesn't think he's wrong,"
"He thinks you're running."
Evelyn nods lightly.
Viktor steps to control panel, activates city map. Lights appear underground routes, old warehouses, abandoned docks.
"He's building a stage. The shipment underground... not for transport."
Diego approaches, eyes sharp:
"For opening."
"Opening what?" Evelyn asks.
"Something to make you remember," Diego answers.
"Or make you come back."
She clenches fist.
"So what are you two going to do?"
Viktor turns, gaze direct:
"Stop him."
Diego continues, voice unrelenting:
"And if needed... burn that stage down."
Evelyn looks at them, first time seeing these two men on same side without agreement.
"You're doing it for the city," she says.
Viktor shakes head:
"For you."
"The city is just the aftermath."
Diego's phone buzzes. Short message from inside line:
"Metal shipment into Warehouse 9.
Memory broadcast device."
Evelyn freezes: "Memories?"
"He wants to broadcast something to all Blackhaven."
Viktor adds:
"To force you out. Or turn you into the story the whole city watches."
Evelyn breathes deep: "He won't stop."
"No," Viktor says.
"But he'll show himself."
Diego turns to Evelyn, voice deeper: "And then... where will you stand?"
She doesn't answer right away.
She steps back to glass, looks down at city.
"Here," she says.
"Between you two. But not to be held."
Viktor looks at her, eyes soften rare beat:
"Then for what?"
She turns:
"To end my story."
Diego nods slow:
"Then from now until then... You're in our sight."
Viktor adds: "Not afraid you'll run. But he'll pull."
Evelyn looks at both:
"I'm not going back to that room."
Diego steps close, hand on doorframe by her head, not touching:
"Then we'll break it."
In Warehouse 9, lights flicker on.
V. S. stands before large screen.
Dozens of faces appear those ready to pay to see past stripped bare.
He whispers:
"Vee... I don't need you back.
Just need you to remember."
His finger hovers over PLAY.
