Chapter 123 - THE LIVING CITY FIGHTS

The heartbeat came again.

THUMP.

The sound rolled beneath Kael's feet.

The commander was still staring at Stormfang.

Around them, Virelith burned with movement.

Roots tore through the floor.

Ancient machines crawled across the walls.

Dark blasts flashed between the defenders and the intruders.

But for one strange second—

everything around Kael seemed distant.

The commander's words remained in his head.

That weapon should not exist.

Kael tightened his grip.

"Who are you?"

The commander looked at him.

Then at Stormfang.

"You don't know."

Kael's expression hardened.

"I asked you a question."

A dark pulse exploded behind him.

The commander stepped aside as one of his soldiers crashed through a root wall.

Kael turned instinctively.

A black-armored intruder raised his weapon.

Stormfang moved before Kael did.

Lightning erupted.

The soldier disappeared inside the blast.

When the light faded, he lay several meters away.

The commander watched.

Then his eyes narrowed.

"Interesting."

Kael turned back.

"Stop looking at my sword."

The commander almost smiled.

"That may be difficult."

Before Kael could move—

the entire chamber shook.

A crack split across the floor.

Everyone stopped.

Even the intruders.

Then—

KRRRRRRAAAASH.

Roots exploded upward.

Not small vines.

Walls.

Massive walls of living roots tore through the stone and rose between the intruders.

Several soldiers were separated instantly.

One slammed against the barrier.

"Commander!"

The roots closed.

His voice vanished.

Xyren stared.

"Okay."

Another wall erupted.

Then another.

The chamber transformed.

Corridors disappeared.

New paths opened.

The city itself was moving.

AURIXA looked upward.

Thin green light raced through the roots surrounding the ceiling.

"The defensive network is expanding."

Elaris placed one hand against the nearest wall.

The moment her fingers touched it—

she froze.

Kael noticed.

"Elaris?"

She didn't answer.

Her eyes slowly widened.

Another heartbeat travelled through the chamber.

THUMP.

Elaris gasped.

Kael moved toward her.

"What is it?"

She pulled her hand away.

Then looked at him.

"I can feel it."

"What?"

"The city."

A sudden scream echoed somewhere behind the root walls.

Elaris looked toward it.

Her expression changed.

"No."

She pressed both hands against the living barrier.

Kael saw the roots respond.

Not to AURIXA.

To Elaris.

Green light travelled beneath her fingers.

Her eyes closed.

For one moment, Kael saw something flash across her expression.

Pain.

Confusion.

Then—

the roots moved.

Far across the chamber, a wall shifted aside.

Three ancient sentinels emerged.

They were taller than Kael.

Their bodies were built from dark metal and pale living material that pulsed beneath the surface.

Their heads slowly lifted.

Green light opened where their eyes should have been.

The intruders raised their weapons.

"Sentinels!"

The commander turned.

"Fall back."

Too late.

The first sentinel moved.

It crossed the chamber in a single blur.

Its arm struck the nearest intruder.

The soldier flew backward and disappeared through a broken section of wall.

A second machine unfolded its arms.

Thin blades of energy formed between its fingers.

The third didn't move.

Its chest opened.

Something inside began to glow.

Xyren's eyes widened.

"Kael."

"What?"

"I think that one is charging."

The sentinel fired.

A beam of storm-blue energy tore across the chamber.

The floor exploded.

Two intruders threw themselves aside.

The commander raised one hand.

A dark barrier appeared in front of him.

The blue energy struck it.

The barrier cracked.

For the first time—

the commander stepped backward.

Xyren looked at Kael.

"I take back everything bad I've ever said about ancient technology."

"You said you hated this city ten minutes ago."

"I've grown."

Another violent tremor interrupted him.

Above them—

the ceiling opened.

Kael looked up.

Darkness stared back.

Then lights appeared.

Dozens.

Hundreds.

Small metallic shapes unfolded from hidden chambers.

They dropped.

Xyren took one step backward.

"Nope."

The machines opened in midair.

Wings of thin metallic leaves spread from their backs.

They began circling the chamber.

The intruders fired.

Black pulses struck them.

Some exploded against the walls.

Others kept moving.

Then one machine landed on an intruder's shoulder.

The soldier screamed.

Another landed.

Then another.

Within seconds, metallic limbs wrapped around his armor.

He disappeared beneath them.

The commander looked upward.

"Disable the swarm."

A soldier raised a device.

Before he could activate it—

a root burst through the floor.

It wrapped around his arm.

The device fell.

Xyren stared.

"Did the root just target the weapon?"

Elaris still had her hands against the wall.

Her eyes remained closed.

"I didn't tell it to."

Kael looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

Elaris opened her eyes.

The roots around them moved.

Slowly.

Almost curiously.

"They're showing me."

"What?"

She looked past him.

"The city."

Another wave of sensation passed through her.

Kael saw her stagger.

He caught her arm.

"Elaris."

She grabbed his wrist.

For one second—

Kael saw it too.

Not with his eyes.

A flash.

Roots spreading beneath stone.

Machines waking inside towers.

Energy moving through broken systems.

And something dark.

Something moving through the lower sectors.

Kael pulled back sharply.

Elaris stared at him.

"Did you—?"

"Yes."

Neither spoke.

Then Xyren shouted.

"Guys!"

They turned.

Xyren stood beside a damaged wall.

His scanner had connected itself to an ancient panel.

Thin green lines were crawling across his hand.

He was staring at them.

"I didn't touch anything."

The panel suddenly lit up.

A deep mechanical voice filled the chamber.

DEFENSIVE GRID—PARTIAL RESTORATION COMPLETE.

Everything stopped.

Kael stared at Xyren.

Elaris looked at him.

Even AURIXA turned.

"Xyren…"

He looked down at his hand.

"Did you do that?"

"No."

The city answered.

A low hum rolled through Virelith.

Far beyond the chamber—

something enormous awakened.

The first storm struck.

Kael looked upward.

"There is no sky."

AURIXA's expression changed.

"You may want to move."

"What?"

The ceiling split.

Not physically.

Light appeared above the stone.

A massive circular structure unfolded.

Ancient rings rotated.

Energy gathered between them.

Storm-blue lightning began crawling across the chamber.

The intruders finally stopped advancing.

The commander looked upward.

"Storm defense."

The words were barely audible.

Xyren stared.

"That's a defense system?"

The commander raised his voice.

"MOVE!"

Lightning came down.

The entire chamber exploded in blue.

Kael threw an arm over his face.

Stormfang screamed.

Not hummed.

Screamed.

He looked down.

The crimson line beneath the blade was burning.

Blue lightning wrapped around it.

Then—

the colors collided.

Kael's eyes widened.

"Stormfang—"

A blast struck the floor nearby.

Elaris was thrown sideways.

"ELARIS!"

Kael moved.

Something hit him from behind.

He crashed against a root wall.

Stormfang slipped from his hand.

The commander appeared through the smoke.

Kael reached for the sword.

The commander stepped on it.

Kael froze.

The commander looked down.

Then slowly raised his weapon.

"Perhaps," he said quietly, "I should take that from you before you learn what it is."

Something inside Kael broke.

Not literally.

Not painfully.

Just—

control.

Stormfang moved.

The commander didn't touch it.

The sword rose from beneath his boot.

Blue lightning erupted across the chamber.

Then the crimson line answered.

Once.

Twice.

The lightning changed.

Red.

Not mixed with blue.

Not purple.

Crimson.

The commander stepped back.

Kael slowly rose.

His eyes were fixed on Stormfang.

Elaris shouted something.

He didn't hear it.

The entire chamber disappeared behind crimson light.

Stormfang flew into his hand.

The moment his fingers closed around the hilt—

BOOOOOOM.

Crimson lightning erupted outward.

Every root in the chamber froze.

The sentinels stopped.

The intruders stopped.

Even the commander stared.

Kael's breathing had changed.

Slow.

Heavy.

Red electricity crawled across his arms.

His eyes flashed.

Blue.

Then crimson.

Xyren's voice came faintly through the storm.

"Kael?"

No response.

Kael lifted his head.

The commander took another step backward.

For the first time—

he looked afraid.

The storm above them answered Kael.

Ancient defense rings shifted.

Blue lightning twisted downward.

Crimson energy collided with it.

The entire system changed.

A violent red storm spread through Virelith.

Alarms echoed from every direction.

AURIXA stared upward.

"No…"

Xyren looked at her.

"What?"

Her eyes locked onto Kael.

"The city isn't controlling the storm anymore."

Elaris stepped forward.

"Kael!"

He turned toward her.

For one terrible second—

she didn't recognize his expression.

There was no anger.

No rage.

That would have been easier.

There was nothing.

Just silence.

And crimson light.

Stormfang slowly rose.

Across the chamber, the commander lifted his weapon.

Kael vanished.

A crimson flash crossed the floor.

The commander barely raised his blade in time.

KRAAAAAANG!

The impact sent him crashing through three layers of roots.

Every intruder froze.

Xyren stared.

"Okay."

A beat.

"That's new."

But Kael didn't stop.

Crimson lightning crawled across the chamber.

The storm above followed him.

The ancient defense system fired again.

This time—

toward him.

Elaris's eyes widened.

"KAEL!"

The bolt struck Stormfang.

The entire city went white.

For one second—

there was nothing.

Then darkness.

Silence.

Slowly, the light returned.

Kael stood at the center of the chamber.

Unmoving.

Stormfang pointed toward the floor.

Crimson energy moved through the blade.

Then beneath it.

Across the stone.

Far beyond the chamber—

through the roots.

Through the towers.

Through the ancient systems waking across Virelith.

Every light in the city turned crimson.

Xyren slowly looked at AURIXA.

"What did he just do?"

AURIXA didn't answer.

Because somewhere deep within Virelith—

something answered the storm.

A voice rolled through the entire city.

Ancient.

Mechanical.

And very much awake.

"ROYAL RESONANCE DETECTED."

Kael's head slowly lifted.

And deep beneath the city—

something enormous opened its eyes.
