Chapter 379 - Overland

They slept at Edran's only inn and left the town behind well before the sixth hour.

The stable was situated at the desolate north end of town, exactly as Varian had stated. The owner was a heavyset, weathered man who addressed Varian by name without an ounce of surprise, having already prepped two horses in the courtyard. He handed Varian the reins of the first—a dark, compact beast with thick legs, clearly accustomed to the brutal northern terrain. Then, he led the second out for Vane.

Varian looked at the horse. Then, his amber eyes shifted to Vane.

He murmured something to the stable owner, a low command Vane didn't quite catch over the wind. The owner nodded, led the second horse back into the shadows of the barn, and emerged a minute later with a completely different mount. It was taller, with a broader chest and a far sturdier build. Varian took the new reins and handed them over without a word.
