Chapter 78 - Chapter 78 A desperate battle

As the sky gradually brightened, the grey-white Wolf Pack banners flew high. Gendry, The Red Viper, Brown Ben, Qyburn, and the Arrow Maker could see the sea of Dothraki Screamers more clearly from the walls of Myr. The Dothraki would launch their attack at dawn.

On the sea of Myr Bay, the tall ships led by Moros were still cruising. The Dothraki feared the sea, and these warships also carried soldiers and archers.

"We still need to rely on the strong city walls, defend, and counterattack. After all, the Dothraki's tactics are very simple, and most of western Essos is indefensible." Gendry had designed a multi-layered defense system for Myr: Unsullied forming a shield wall outside the city, Longbowmen on the city walls, catapults inside Myr's gates, and the fleet cruising on the sea.

The Dothraki's tactics were very fixed. When a Khalasar moved, scouts would always patrol ahead of the main force, responsible for watching for all kinds of prey and enemy traces, while vanguard troops guarded the flanks. After battle, 'Jacaqars' wielding great axes would harvest countless heads from the dead and dying, and little Children would pull arrows from corpses and put them into baskets for reuse.

The civilian houses around Myr's city gates had already been dismantled and brought into the city. Now, the infantry, arranged in formation, stood unmoving directly in front of Myr's west gate. The leading Unsullied struck their shields with their Longspears, making a powerful clanging sound.

"Boom!" "Boom!" The Unsullied, wearing spiked helmets and holding Longspears and shields, led the soldiers in shouts. Gendry had equipped the Unsullied with more sturdy and convenient armor, which was not difficult for Myr's craftsmen.

However, the number of Unsullied was only a few dozen. Behind the Grey Wolf were Wolf Pack soldiers, Free Army soldiers trained by the Grey Wolf. Behind them, Wolf Pack infantry and Free Army infantry, wearing plate armor and chainmail, had their weapons and shields ready, maintaining solemnity with faces like iron. Even though the soldiers had formed their ranks, they had not drunk the wine of courage or undergone brutal training, making them unable to withstand more than dozens of rounds of dothraki attacks.

"Lady of Spears! Bless us, bless our commander, the liberator, with victory," the Grey Wolf prayed.

On the west side of Myr Bay, the earth had been torn apart by the dothraki's iron hooves. Rye and lentils were trampled into the mud, and the Dothraki Screamers roared loudly.

The dothraki cavalry moved on horseback, like a dark cloud. They all had long braids, and dothraki warriors tied small bells to their braids, which jingled softly as they moved.

"Khal Jhezkahn is here!" Gendry saw the figure of Khal Jhaqo, a middle-aged Khal riding a black horse, about forty years old. Khal Jhaqo had bronze skin, black eyes, and black hair. He was a tall man with a graceful physique.

Khal Jhaqo had a long beard and had braided his hair into a long braid that reached his thighs, adorned with small golden bells. Time had left its marks; Khal Jhaqo's face had some wrinkles, and he had some white hair.

"There are still about seven thousand Screaming Warriors!" The Red Viper said.

"Khal Jhaqo has put all his belongings here, I see!" Gendry analyzed. The Dothraki were always greedy; since they accepted the Tyroshi's gifts and were willing to come, they must obtain more prey.

Gendry had also concentrated all his cavalry: the Wolf Pack, the Spear Company, the Free Army knights, and a hundred Dornish light cavalry brought by The Red Viper. The Second Sons were also knights, but the Second Sons' knights were too slippery and not suitable for a direct confrontation with the Myrish.

"Then let's see who hunts down this barbarian of the Dothraki Sea first." The Red Viper smiled. His Attendants carried a Longspear with a leaf-shaped spearhead that looked very wicked. "This spear is eight feet long, its shaft made of ash wood, smooth, thick, and heavy. The last two feet are steel. I originally prepared it for another brute."

"The Mountain." Gendry was very sure of The Red Viper's thoughts. The Mountain was nearly eight feet tall, weighed almost thirty stone, and was all muscle. He could wield a two-handed greatsword with one hand and could cleave a man in half with a single blow. The Mountain's armor was so heavy that no one else could wear it, or even move it.

"Indeed! Against a giant like The Mountain, a Longspear is a good idea, but against that pig, I won't let him die too quickly!" The Red Viper said confidently.

"Too much confidence is not a good thing!" Gendry thought, but he did not disturb The Red Viper's confidence. For a behemoth like The Mountain, caution was best.

The Dothraki's roars came from the battlefield. Khal Jhaqo led the Dothraki Screamers to not far from the army formation, but Khal Jhaqo did not launch an attack.

"Run!" "Run fast!" A group of enslaved Boys, driven by the Dothraki, were released. There were no Girls, because Girls were still considered a form of wealth. These people rushed towards Myr's city gate. They had bronze faces and almond-shaped eyes, very similar to the Dothraki, but were shorter and had flat faces. Their hair was usually cut very short.

"They are sheep men!" Brown Ben said. "They live in Lhazar, southeast of Vaes Dothrak, and are a pastoral people. The Dothraki call the Lhazareen 'Hesh K'lathi,' which means 'sheep men,' because the Lhazareen are meek and live only by herding."

"It seems the Dothraki want to show us some color!" Gendry said.

These young slaves were running on foot, but how could their speed compare to that of horses? The Dothraki Screamers spread out, forcing these Children to flee in all directions. The Dothraki whipped these young slaves with their fast horses. The slaves who were caught cried out in pain, their backs stained with blood.

The Dothraki in the outer circle felt a bit bored. Some Boys fell to the ground due to injuries, only able to crawl. The Dothraki drew their bows and shot an arrow through the back of a sheep men Boy. A moment later, all these sheep men Boys died in front of the battlefield.

Gendry watched this bloody scene. Violence was not everything; it only increased the hatred and fear of the Myrish and everyone else towards the Dothraki.

"When the cavalry goes out later, I'll leave it to you!" Gendry said to Brown Ben, Maester Qyburn, and the Arrow Maker.

"Don't worry!"

"I still want to shoot a few more horse people." The Arrow Maker said defiantly. "It is rumored that these horse people are the best archers."

The slaughter was just the Dothraki's first appetizer for the Myrish, but what puzzled the Khal was that the Myrish did not retreat; they still maintained the Unsullied's formation.

The horse people's scouts quickly discovered the clue: there were not thousands of Unsullied, so they relaxed...

Seeing that there was no large Unsullied army, Khal Jhaqo confidently ordered a charge.

Under the blue sky, the Dothraki Screamers began to charge, their long braids black and shiny. They were bare-chested, without shields or helmets, wearing painted leather vests, with horsehair leggings tied to their calves, and bronze belts around their waists. Only the Khal's belt was different, a beautiful golden belt.

"Crack! Crack!" The catapults made a desperate sound, and then stone projectiles as large as a Half-man began to be thrown towards the Dothraki ranks.

Some unlucky Dothraki were hit by stones, their bodies bursting open like watermelons. But more Dothraki charged forward, smashing into the formation set up by the Unsullied.

"Cowards in armor!" The Dothraki Screamers cursed.

The Grey Wolf and Steel Fist organized the formation. The Unsullied and a thousand Wolf Pack soldiers in the outermost ring were elite and fierce, while the two thousand Free Army infantry behind them only needed to hold their ground.

"Splat!" Some horse people were directly thrown to the ground, but the shield wall remained impenetrable. They received their first gift. In front of the Unsullied formation, Gendry had ordered people to scatter a lot of wildfire on the ground. The previously dry earth was now soaked, which was unfavorable for a cavalry charge.

"My victory depends on how long the Grey Wolf and Steel Fist can hold out." Gendry looked at the battle below, feeling like an arrow on a taut bowstring, ready to be shot.
