The witch rose from the bed with deliberate slowness, as though time itself bent to her will, and returned to the chair she had abandoned moments before. The distance she put between herself and Vynn felt intentional, calculated—an illusion of retreat rather than an act of surrender.
Vynn remained where she was for a heartbeat longer, chest rising with restrained fury, before pushing herself upright. Her glare followed the witch like a blade pressed to a spine.
The witch noticed. Of course she did.
Her crimson lips curved into that infuriating smirk, the one that never reached her eyes, the one that promised amusement at another's expense. Emerald green met molten gold, and something unspoken passed between them—an unbalanced contest where Vynn, for all her power, stood at a disadvantage she refused to name.
It wasn't only the witch's magic that unsettled her.
It was her gaze.
