Chapter 44: ENTER THE STORM
POV: Ivyn Mikaelson
[June 5, 2018 — Cobra Kai Dojo — 4:00 PM]
Four days of double sessions had transformed the dojo into a crucible. The mats were stained with sweat that never fully dried. The air tasted like effort and ambition. Students who'd started as soft civilians were hardening into something sharper.
I loved every second of it.
"New student today," Johnny announced, checking his phone with a frown. "Some girl who saw our tournament run. Try not to scare her off in the first five minutes."
"No promises, Sensei," Hawk called out, mohawk freshly re-dyed to an aggressive crimson.
The front door opened.
She walked in like she already owned the place.
Blonde hair pulled back tight. Eyes that scanned the room with predatory efficiency—dismissing most students in milliseconds, lingering on Hawk's mohawk with amusement, passing over Miguel with mild interest. When her gaze found me, it stopped.
I grinned like Christmas had come early.
"Tory Nichols. Right on schedule."
She was exactly as I remembered from the show—lean, coiled, dangerous in the way cornered animals are dangerous. The bruise on her forearm was faded but visible, and the calluses on her knuckles spoke of fights that had nothing to do with sport.
"Fresh meat!" I bounced forward before Johnny could make introductions.
Her smirk matched mine. "Who's volunteering to get hurt?"
"ME!"
Johnny sighed heavily. "Of course you are."
[NEW CHARACTER DETECTED: Tory Nichols]
[Threat Assessment: High]
[Potential: Exceptional]
[Recommendation: Befriend immediately]
The other students backed up as we moved to the center mat. Tory hadn't even changed into a gi—she wore street clothes, combat boots, the outfit of someone who'd learned to fight in parking lots rather than dojos.
Perfect.
"Rules?" she asked.
"Hit me until I say stop."
Her eyebrows rose. "Seriously?"
"Consider it an entrance exam."
She didn't hesitate.
The first combination came fast—jab-cross-hook, textbook street fighting with hints of actual training underneath. I let them land. The jab rocked my chin. The cross snapped my head sideways. The hook caught my temple and made stars bloom.
"Harder!"
Confusion flickered across her face, but she obliged. A front kick to my stomach that drove the air from my lungs. An elbow that split the skin above my eyebrow. A knee strike that I barely blocked in time.
"She's better than I expected. Raw, but vicious. The aggression is real—she's not playing at violence, she's lived it."
I laughed through bloody teeth.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Tory demanded, breathing hard.
"Nothing! This is great!"
I finally countered. Slipped her next punch, caught her wrist, swept her legs from under her. She hit the mat hard but rolled immediately, coming up in a crouch.
I extended my hand.
She stared at it like a trap. Then took it.
"You're insane," she said as I pulled her up.
"Thanks! You're violent! Wanna be friends?"
Her laugh was sharp, surprised out of her. "That's not usually how people react to getting punched in the face."
"I'm not usually people."
[RELATIONSHIP ESTABLISHED: Tory Nichols]
[Initial Status: Curious (+15)]
[Shared Trait Detected: Combat Enthusiasm]
Johnny clapped his hands. "Alright, show's over. Line up for basics. Tory, you're in the back row. Watch and learn."
She took her position but kept glancing at me throughout the session. I caught her eye during horse stance holds and winked. She rolled her eyes but almost smiled.
After class, while other students filtered out to their cars and their normal lives, Tory approached the bench where I was rewrapping my knuckles.
"You let me hit you."
"You needed to hit someone."
The words landed differently than I'd expected. Her expression flickered—surprise, recognition, something vulnerable that she buried immediately.
"My life's been shit," she said quietly.
"Mine too." I gestured at the dojo around us. "Then I found this. Better than therapy."
"Cheaper too."
"Significantly."
We fist-bumped. The motion felt natural, like we'd been doing it for years instead of minutes.
"I work three jobs," Tory said, sitting down beside me. "Mom's sick. Brother's young. Nobody's coming to save us."
"Nobody saved me either. Foster system until I aged out. Now I save myself."
Her eyes sharpened with interest. "You're not from here. The way you talk, the way you fight—you're not some Valley kid playing at tough."
"Careful. She's perceptive."
"I've seen some things. Learned some lessons the hard way."
"Yeah." She looked at the mats where we'd fought. "I can tell."
Miguel appeared in the doorway, gym bag over his shoulder. "Hey, Ivyn, you coming to dinner at my place? Yaya made tamales."
"Save me some. I'll be there in twenty."
He nodded, glancing at Tory with barely concealed concern before leaving.
"Boyfriend?" Tory asked.
"Training brother. We came up together."
"He looks at you like you're about to explode."
"I get that a lot."
We exchanged numbers. Tory's phone was cracked, the screen held together with tape—another detail that told her story without words. She caught me noticing and shrugged.
"Works well enough."
"That's all that matters."

[Violence Buddy Status: Initiated]
The parking lot was emptying when I finally walked out. Miguel waited by his car, pretending to check his phone.
"She seems dangerous," he said as I approached.
I pulled a gas station hot dog from my bag—purchased that morning, slightly concerning in temperature—and took a massive bite.
"That's why she's perfect!"
"For what?"
"For becoming better. Danger motivates growth!"
Miguel stared at me for a long moment. "I genuinely can't tell if you're wise or just crazy."
"Both. Definitely both."
My phone buzzed. Sam: "How was training?"
I texted back: "Great! Made a new friend. Awesome training partner."
Her response was immediate: "😰😰😰 Should I be worried?"
"Only if you're scared of progress."
"That's not reassuring."
I was typing a response when another message came through. Viktor: "Fight club moved. Bigger venue. You ready for real match?"
My grin could have powered the entire Valley.
"Born ready."
