Chapter 272 - The Dragon’s Forge

The inventory for Charizard promised a journey far more legendary than anyone had anticipated. Entei, Mewtwo, Yveltal... these were names that had not appeared in any of the previous retrospectives.

The segment featuring Mewtwo was clearly not a mere replay of past events, but an entirely new chapter.

Furthermore, the inclusion of Genesect—a Pokémon none of the observers had encountered before—seemed to confirm a cryptic remark Mewtwo once made during a clash of legends regarding a meeting with Ash in the United States.

The Heavenly Dao inventory showed a cheeky side this time, inserting a disclaimer urging the audience to attend to their personal needs beforehand, as the upcoming viewing would require undivided attention.

[Lance: I thought there wouldn't be much groundbreaking in Charizard's inventory, but I was incredibly naive.]

[Diantha: Thank you, Lance. It's because you voiced that thought that we have so many new things to look forward to!]

[Lance: ... Is everyone targeting me today? What did I do to deserve this?]

[Blaine: To think... Charizard has faced an unbelievable number of legends. We saw him against Articuno and Reshiram; now we add Entei, Mewtwo, and Yveltal. I wonder if this Genesect is also a legendary entity.]

[Volkner: If you tally it up, that makes at least five! Aside from Pikachu, Charizard is clearly the Pokémon on Ash's team with the highest number of legendary confrontations on record.]

The presentation opened with a scene now recognized as a defining classic: a small, shivering Charmander huddling in the pouring rain, desperately shielding the flickering flame on its tail.

Watching from a prison cell, its former trainer, Damian, felt a profound sting of regret. The very Charizard now famous for world-class power—the one capable of going toe-to-toe with gods—was the same one he had discarded as "weak."

After Ash welcomed the Fire-type onto his team, Charmander's true potential began to ignite. The footage highlighted early milestones: its crucial role on the St. Anne, assisting in subduing Primeape, and its decisive two-Pokémon sweep at the Fuchsia Gym.

However, the inventory took a somber turn, revisiting a memory from a snowy mountain pass. Trapped in a blizzard, Ash had initially released Charmander to provide warmth.

But as the sub-zero temperatures plummeted, Charmander's own inner fire began to fade.

Seeing his partners suffering, Ash did the unthinkable: he recalled Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Pidgeotto into their Poké Balls, then wrapped his own jacket around them to preserve their warmth with his body heat.

Pikachu refused to leave his side, huddled tightly in Ash's arms. While many trainers claim they would die for their Pokémon, Ash proved it in the biting ice.

In a moment that moved every observer, the Pokémon broke free from their balls, refusing to let their trainer freeze alone.

They pressed against him, sharing their collective warmth to keep him alive through the night.

[Lance: Tears... Ash... I am literally crying right now!]

[N: The bond between Ash and his Pokémon... it is truly something to be desired. I am beginning to see that the issue isn't the partnership itself, but those who mistreat it.]

In the Footage —

The journey shifted toward Charmander's first major transformation. After defeating an army of rampaging Exeggutor, the surge of experience triggered its evolution into Charmeleon.

But this evolution marked a dark chapter. Charmeleon became willful and arrogant, completely ignoring Ash's commands.

This effectively sidelined Ash's strongest asset, leaving his team vulnerable. The rebellion reached a boiling point when a wild Aerodactyl provoked the group, carrying Ash into the sky.

Fueled by a desperate need to face a stronger opponent, Charmeleon forced a premature evolution into Charizard!

Because its growth was rushed, this initial Charizard was significantly shorter than the species average.

Yet, its power was undeniable. Its streak of disobedience continued, famously costing Ash a victory at the Cinnabar Gym until the lizard was personally insulted by Blaine's Magmar.

Then, the focus shifted to the defining heartbreak of Ash's early career: the Indigo League. In a match against his friend Ritchie, Charizard easily dispatched Zippo the Charmander.

But when Ritchie sent out Sparky—a small Pikachu—Charizard surveyed the opponent, deemed it "unworthy," and simply lay down to sleep.

This act of ultimate disrespect resulted in Ash's elimination in the Top 16.

The Backyard of the Oak Institute

Charizard scratched its head awkwardly, a look of profound guilt on its reptilian face. No matter how many times it saw these memories, it felt the sting of its past selfishness.

Ash had saved its life, yet it had repaid that debt by sleeping through Ash's dream.

"Charizard, don't worry about it," Ash said, patting his old friend's side. He had long since forgiven him. "I wasn't a good enough trainer back then to lead you properly. We're different now, aren't we?"

Ash never blamed Charizard for the Indigo loss, always attributing it to his own lack of experience. But the past was just that—the past.

In their current reality, Charizard's bond was unbreakable, and they had already used the insights from the inventory to conquer the real Quartz Conference.

The "rebellion" was over; the "legend" was just beginning.
