Her lips curled into a bitter smile.
"Everything had to be perfect. My grades. My appearance. My behaviour. Even the people I was allowed to like."
Liam remained silent. Fu Jiang continued,
"They wanted me to like you. From a very young age, they kept telling me that you were the person I was destined to be with. They constantly compared me to other girls and told me that if I wanted to become your wife one day, I had to be better than everyone else."
She laughed softly. "But back then... I didn't like you."
Liam's eyes flickered slightly. Fu Jiang lowered her gaze.
"I actually liked someone else. The son of my nanny. He was kind to me. He was the only person who treated me like an ordinary girl instead of some precious doll that had to remain perfect. I liked him. At least, I think I did."
She gave a self-deprecating smile.
