Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 6:THE FIRST MISSION BEYOND THE TRIBE

The morning sun pierced through the forest canopy, casting dappled light across the village square. Lyra stood at the edge of the gathering, her tail swaying nervously, ears twitching at every movement. Today was different.

The chief's voice rang out, cold and authoritative:

"Today, the first mission beyond the village begins. Each young adult will accompany a senior warrior to patrol the forest. Your survival depends on alertness, teamwork, and skill. Failure will bring shame — or worse."

Lyra's stomach clenched. This wasn't a trial. This was real. Real danger, real predators, real consequences.

The system chimed in her mind:

[First Mission Objective: Patrol the forest and neutralize hostile creatures.]

[Rewards: Strength +3, Agility +2, Experience +5, Beast Form Mastery +1]

[Failure: Host Death Probability 50%]

Her fists clenched. She had survived zombies. She had survived trials. She could survive this.

A shadow fell over her.

Kael.

The wolf prince stepped forward, golden eyes sharp, tail flicking with barely concealed irritation. "You're coming with me," he said. "Try not to get us both killed."

Lyra's ears twitched in irritation. "Oh, fantastic. The 'golden wolf' who insulted me yesterday will now babysit me. Perfect."

Kael smirked faintly. "Watch closely. Survival isn't about whining."

Lyra huffed but followed. Every step was measured, tail and ears alert. The forest loomed, alive with whispers of the wild.

The first hour was tense silence. Birds called above, leaves rustled, and the earthy scent of the forest enveloped them. Kael moved with effortless grace, each step precise. Lyra's legs, though still awkward, carried her faster than yesterday. Her beast form's training had helped her adapt.

A sudden snap of a branch froze them both. Golden eyes glinted — Kael's and a pair in the shadows.

A wild lynx-beast leapt from the underbrush, claws extended. Its growl rumbled through the forest.

Lyra's heart raced. Her claws flexed, tail bristling.

[Mini Skill Activated: Strength Burst (Beginner)]

She lunged instinctively, grabbing a rope trap the tribe had supplied. The lynx snarled, swiping at her. Kael moved with terrifying speed, intercepting the strike.

"Focus!" he barked. "Don't just react. Control your instincts!"

Lyra narrowed her eyes, letting the surge of Strength Burst flow through her. She anchored her feet, pulled the trap, and — with Kael's coordinated effort — restrained the lynx.

It struggled, yipping and snarling, but they had subdued it.

Her chest heaved. Fur bristled, claws scratched the earth, ears twitching. Sweat dripped down her face.

The system chimed:

[Host completed first real mission encounter.]

[Reward: Strength +3, Agility +2, Beast Form Mastery +1]

[Relationship Update: Kael → Tentative Respect (0) → Acknowledged Skill (+10)]

Lyra blinked. Kael's golden eyes softened — not fully approving, but an acknowledgment of her skill.

The patrol continued. They encountered smaller predators — venomous snakes, packs of wild boars, and a lone hawk-beast that swooped dangerously close. Lyra reacted with increasing confidence, using her agility, beast instincts, and newfound strength.

Kael offered occasional advice, but rarely interfered. He allowed her to learn from mistakes, step by step, gradually treating her as more than just the "useless girl."

By the time they returned to the tribe, Lyra's body ached. She was filthy, covered in scratches and bruises, but her chest swelled with pride. She had survived beyond what anyone had expected — including herself.

The chief's voice cut through the murmurs:

"Lyra. You performed better than expected. Kael, you may speak."

Kael stepped forward, gaze on Lyra. His ears flicked, tail stiff. "You survived. You adapted. You're… stronger than I thought. Keep it up."

Lyra blinked, heart racing. Respect. A spark of acknowledgment from Kael — the first real step toward trust.

The system chimed softly:

[Mission Complete]

[Rewards: Strength +3, Agility +2, Beast Form Mastery +1]

[New Skill Unlocked: Predator Instinct (Beginner)]

Lyra exhaled, feeling the weight of the day. She was stronger, faster, smarter. Beast form was improving. Kael was watching — not with contempt, but with interest.

The enemies-to-lovers tension remained, crackling like static, but Lyra felt it differently now. She had survived. She had grown. And for the first time, she realized this world, harsh as it was, could be conquered — if she continued to rise.

She looked at Kael. He met her gaze, golden eyes sharp, but softer than before.

Her lips curled in a small, victorious smirk. "Next time… I won't just survive. I'll dominate."

Kael's ears twitched. He didn't respond. But the twitch of his tail betrayed a thought unspoken: perhaps she might.

The forest whispered around them. Lyra's journey had only just begun.
